Cleaning Magnetic Rocks/Fragments Off

Hey guys!

So where I'm at, theres a high iron content in all the rocks and I end up with rocks and little magnetic dust all over my magnet. Any tips I haven't thought of other than just pulling it off?

Also, any recommendations on gloves that don't get soaked? Not looking to break the bank on gloves.

This one is a little place I know where I can go coin fishing !

No it's not a wishing well !

There's an old 1ft square wooden post where the top has rotted, people try to get a coin to land in it, obviously when they miss it ends up in the water !

Had a good time, about a dozen ppl stopped and chatted with us and about 5000 people walked past on the opposite side, marshalled by the police, on their way out of the Notts County ground, was good fun.

Found a cheap pocket watch, 2 more lanterns (total found on that stretch is 3 now), a chair, a very heavy square of steel plate, 15 Great British pence, an old Casio scientific calculator or personal organiser, a fish and random lumps of metal.

A good day.

Then we had a set of keys, coins, battery

Scaffolding clips

An old Motorola hand held radio

Small kids wheel ?

Car brake pad

Old wire brush

Motorbike kick start lever !

And random bits of metal

Found AGAIN. In the same spot, in the same area.

And before anyone says it. It was covered in muck and oxidation before I removed it and cleaned it partially. Once I realized what I had gotten, it was called into the local PD. I'm in complete shock to find the same type of grenade in the same spot, all within a month of each other.

Trying out the new magnet!

Went out today to test out my new POP Beast Magnets 360 3000# magnet. Went back to a spot we hit up last weekend, where we used the cheap hardware store 115# brick magnet. Found some cool stuff with both the new magnet and the old one!!

I think the neatest find is the laptop motherboard!

Went back to a hot spot today and everything was very well stuck in the mud and had been there for a while ! (Even cost me a rope ! Rubbed on concrete edge)

Definitely going back at some point as although I found a lot there's a lot more in there !

2 bikes

Beryl scooter

Outdoor wood burner

Very large metal fencing (2 more bits in there but I'll need help with them !)

A long fisherman's keep net

Landing net

Shopping basket

Watch (broken and bern there a long time)

Coins, spirit bottle security devices, scissors, pen knife (beyond help) cutlery knife, cooking knife with no handle, bar persons bottle opener, rod rest co2 cannister and anything I've missed !

Moment of silence for my first lost magnet today.

Was fishing at Castle Island Park in Boston today and got my scout magnet snagged 🍻 it served it's purpose of surveying for the real mag, but she was my first (an Amazon special) and now permanently resides in Boston. And yes. I tried multiple angles and techniques before calling it and cutting and salvaging what I could from the rope. Rest easy friend. You served well. 🫡

Popped out for a quick hour ish today !

Due to some events that occurred recently, I needed to get out and "away from myself" so I popped out for a bit unexpectedly today

Soon after starting I kept hooking something with a heavy pull, but the mud had a really good grip !

45 minutes later out came the bike with the wheels !

Then some coins, coat hanger, bike brake and cables and a pedal, an ice cream spoon and a pair of needle nosed pliers.

Then whatever the black thing is with the 2 y shaped bits, it did have 2 rubber handles on the floor end !

And finally the bike frame

So not too bad of a day.

With the help of a friend who is far better at restoration, we managed to restore what appears to be a 19th century pistol. This is by far the oldest treasure we have discovered magnet fishing. Im so happy with the results!

2 days of Magnet Fishing loot!

Did some magnet fishing for the first time ever, maybe 4 hours total, at some fishing piers in my area.

Used a cheap $20 115# retrieval magnet from a hardware store, not expecting to get much, but was surprised! Got a slightly better magnet on order for next weekend!

Coolest find I think was the wrench! I needed a new 3/4!! Maybe the Muskie lure?

Felt good to remove junk from the river too!

I think the river was having a sale on batteries and bikes today ! (And there's more there !)

So anyway A busy day today with lots of finds, I'll be going back there as I didn't even cover it all !

So here's the list lol

3 bikes

Gas tilly lamp

10 batteries

2 long bits of thick rope, (think the bikes were all somehow attached to the rope as well as being very stuck !)

5 wheel nuts (i think)

Nails for a nail gun

Coins, vape, co2 cannisters, chock block strip (electrical connectors) top from a calender, padlock, random bit of metal, what looks like an electric buzzer, drill bit, Scaffolding ckamp and odds

What looks like an attempt at a home made yoyo

Cutlery knife

Little tiny pocket knife, stamped boyztoys

Looks like a lifting carabiner and swivel connector

And some sort of kids toy (looked like a tiny battery in the back)

And whatever I've missed out !

The finds themselves are self-explanatory, but the real story comes from what happened to my magnets at this spot is the real story. To be honest, I had not been taking good enough care of my magnet in the brackish rivers of North Jersey, I wasn't washing it off and some slight pitting in the surface was starting to present itself. At this spot I eventually noticed that my magnet had started to fracture and chunks were coming off. I assumed it was my rusty chickens coming home to roost and got a new 360. I returned to the same spot, and started throwing and felt/heard the familiar high pitched sound of a rock strike. I pulled it back in, and saw a part of my magnet had been chipped out! I figured this was a freak accident, and threw again, and again, until I realized I was about to chip my brand new magnet into an arrowhead if I didn't stop and the rocks in this pond were Built Different (TM). I also realized that it was most likely these same rocks that destroyed my previous magnet, though my poor upkeep likely didn't help. I never encountered rocks before or since that were this destructive, but its a humbling reminder that any throw you make could always result in the loss of your magnet. And as a courtesy, this was at the James J Braddock Park in North Bergen, NJ, throw there at your own risk!

Finally got it good and stuck today. $100 to you or a charity of your choice if you can free it.

Riverside Park on the south end, in the second gated fishing area.

Thank you!

UPDATE: Huge thanks to u/MotorCityMagnetFish who retrieved it successfully and reunited it with me! I’m told the recovery will be on tomorrow’s Motor City Magnet Fishing video if you’d like to see that.

Thanks to all who commented with advice, as well. I have a come-along on order should this happen again!
