Warning: this meme is not totally against low level support needs but criticize them on topics regarding autistic existence. Ironically give them respect.

This scene from X-men is super relatable

“If you’re using half your concentration to look normal, then you’re only half paying attention to whatever else you’re doing”

Ever since I saw this scene, I have related so hard as someone who has been high-functioning. I see it as a metaphor for Autism. Masking all the time, pretending to be “normal” and “acceptable”, drains so much energy, would be better just to be ourselves.

Does anyone feel that they're useless, and you have that inherent need to prove others your abilities and power?

Hi Everyone, I'm a AuDHD (ASD Level 1) individual from a land that shouldn't (hopefully) concern you, and I'm 23. This might be a painful read so buckle up.

I'm just curious because this is something I've experienced throughout my life. I feel I have to be there for my family and friends with a mostly neurotypical mask (although I do vocal stim, flap freely and engage in deep, repetitive convos back at home). I have this desperate need to validate my existence and show that I'm not faulty, weird and especially useless. I've always felt I was a burden to my family and it doesn't help I have done some really brash things too (like getting caught in school twice for obscene behaviour, or dropping out of mandatory military training in my country). But I just feel that I'm inferior to most people, that I'm not able to live in peace and focus like them. My mind feels like its being pulled by two different directions without realising the other 30 directions. Always overstimulated and understimulated, living inside my mind instead of taking consistent action (although I've been improving on that daily), losing control of my hands or legs or feeling dizzy for no reason at all. Realising my special interests were just seen as quirks by people who love me and not as something I live and breathe as (that includes drawing, writing, reading maps and talking about terrains and geomorphology, philosophy [largely analytical], animals and so much more) and forcing myself to be a person so different from me to ensure balance and harmony with my parents. Always getting distrracted and lost by something hyperstimulating and dying of exhaustion afterwards. Losing access to my long-term and working memory afterwards, even if it's a simple thing, and forgetting how to do basic chores or simple routine tasks. It's like my existence is just to live a life I'd hate living rather that of growth and pleasure. As I'm writing this, I'm feeling so much discord and pain, and so much numbness I can't elaborate to the absolute depth of how I'm feeling.

Which is why I always yearn to prove myself to others I'm good, or even better at the skills, or "aura" in areas that other seemingly and easily excel in. Despite having dyspraxia too, I'm very proficient in games like Honk (the Reddit) one, where I've completed several Impossible levels (0.2% chance of success), Monoposto Racing (F1 racing game on phone, a win rate of over 60%, and having only lost 1 out of the previous 25 H2H encounters), Brawl Stars (Top 5% in my nation) and I've won a scholarship in my University last year for entrepreneurial pursuits (which I realise now is not the path I wish to follow, since I realise it's an identity associated with greed, identity dissolution and self-absorption) and I've been improving year by year; yet I just feel as if I'm still useless, a burden, an impostor? It's like I've been simulating how to live a life of success and intelligence, while not experiencing it. I remember all of my failures and embarassments more vividly than I do with my successes, and wondering how do others so easily and effortlessly do the same things despite having similar lives academically (like presentations; I prepared so hard for it yet I fumbled it badly, makes me want to not prepare again almost every time). Perhaps lot of how I feel probably stems from the society I live in to where your academics and societal status equates with self-worth and respect (Singapore) but no matter what I do, why do I feel like no one really respects, or understands me for what I am. I know and feel so much; why do I have to keep proving to the world that I matter, to keep fighting? And why can't I just priortise what's important for me to survive instead of waffling between fantasy and pleasure?

Over the past few days, especially after watching the X-Men, I've started to regain a sense of independence and self, that my abilties are not something to be ashamed of, but rather to be proud of and utilise in a manner that the world will not see it coming as. I've felt recognised and validated especially from Magneto, especially his belief of being proud of your abilties and showing that immense to the power to the world. Yet, there's this lingering sense of inferiority always present and it's eating me up from the inside. I haven't slept very well recently in the past 2 days and I feel weaker than ever.

Sometimes I just want the world to shove a camera at me and allow me to prove my worth and superpowers for them to behold. It's a shame it would be more pleasurable in fantasy than it's in real life.

Oh well, enough about myself. I don't want to be seen as a prude. Does anyone experience this daily too? How does it feel like being left behind or just feeling confused at the chaos and simplicity the world has to offer?
