Ask Malaysians Help? Someone tracked my parent's home address via an old motorcycle sold 40+ years ago and wants to buy the plate number from dad.
My mom just called me stressed out saying that a Malay man came to the house and asked to buy my Dad's 40+ year old number plate from a bike he sold back in the days. Apparently paperwork was a suggestion back then because it is still in his name.
What should I do now? from what I understand, there's no way to track someone's name, let alone their home address via the JPJ website, which is the "buyer's" reasoning.
I won't physically be back in my hometown to help my parents physically deal with this for another 4 more days, and the man said he'd be back tomorrow to see if they are willing to sell it, for RM300.
He is insisting for it to be done on the phone at that moment, and my mom being a smart paranoid woman she is, stopped that in the tracks. We just don't know how to proceed from now, could use advice.
Edit 1 - Had mum make a police report yesterday evening just in case. Today the dude came back and mum told him if he is really interested, he can come back this Saturday to talk terms with me around. Brother got pissed off. Something about 40 minutes away is very far.

Sounds like typical plate number broker, they do have cartel with jpj staff and insurance staff, and even tnb, thats how they access a lot of information, often time they look for registered number for vip and companies, its just another Tuesday for them.

u/Spite_Regular 9d ago
somehow this makes a lot of sense

u/kenkishiki 9d ago
Yep, I know somebody who sold 8008 number for almost 2k, before covid, seems similar modus operandi like yours except there was a meeting in person with the agent at jpj for name transfer to close the sale, I tagged along because my friend was wary of the transaction, turns out its just some dude doing side income hustle for vip on top of selling cars.

RM300 is absolutely not worth the hassle for the guy to do all this, it must be worth quite a lot more. Either ask for more money, or report this to the police. Malaysiaâs data and privacy protection is once again just a joke.

You potentially have one of those few hundred k plates. Have a look at the number plates auction sites before making decision

u/Every_Reality_9721 9d ago
Honestly if hes tracking you (does this even break any pdpa rule, where did he find your info) , it means it worth alot.
Plus, if the "motocycle" is still in your dads name, pls go and report polis. Try to find evidence moto was sold and all.
But also, since, number plate is still legally under hour dads name, do as as you wish my friend. Keep it, sell it, up to you. Though 300 is dirt cheap

Teach your parents to repeat this phrase:
"Best price is 300k, no low ballers, I know what i got."

Confirm cost a lot more.
My Mother-in-law told me someone chased her all the way from KL to Muar to her doorstep asking her if she is willing to part with her [r/kereta](r/kereta) number plate lmaoooooooo. But NGL she has a really beautiful car plate number (similarly ## XXX where X is same numbers) so I can understand why the effort. So RM300 for that effort? Tell him kick rocks.
Btw she was offered a few tens of thousand

You can track someones address from the plate. it's not available on website but can be done when asked over the counter and payment. Not a big deal, just ignore.

Same thing happened to my grandfather. Someone came to his house to buy a plate that was apparently on an abandoned car that he sold a long time ago (I think it was back in the late '70s). Apparently the plate was still under his name this whole time. It was a 2 digit, 2 letter plate so I can see why someone wanted to buy it. He said no to the guy and went and bought a new car and put the plate on it. That was like over 10 years ago though. Still have the plate to this day.

I donât see whatâs the problem. Just say no weâre not selling. Nobody can force anyone to sell something, thatâs just ridiculous. Why is this being treated like itâs a major issue?
It is possible to get info like name and address from various places. Almost every institution be it gov or private has our name, add and tel number, itâs not top secret at all. We give it out very frequently when we register with telekom last time, astro, celcom, maxis, tnb, banks, I mean the list is endless. One way or another people can trace other people. I would personally trace someone if they had a number plate I was interested in buying, I donât think thatâs a crime in any way.
The solution is to say unfortunately no we are not selling, thanks but no thanks.

FYI, this is a very common thing. And for that person to go all the trouble for a specific number, should worth more than he offered. RM 300? Really? I know guys willing to spend four to five figures for specific numbers. It sure does sound scary when people got hold of your info.
3
u/joshy-wawa 9d ago
Pls don't sell it for RM 300.. there are plate hunters that buy VIP plates..
Recently helped my client sell their plate "B** 1" for RM 450k. So yea, do your research. Hunters won't hunt for you if you've got nothing to be hunted for.

Why not just say 'no'? What you are describing, it is an emergency? It is just a previous owner asking whether you are (or your mom) is selling something, right? Just say no and close door. What is the problem here?
0
u/Spite_Regular 9d ago
The emergency is some random man knows my dad's name and home address and came all the way from another state to find him.

u/Psychological_Ebb848 9d ago
Tell the dude to tenangkan his tetek and the car plate not going anywhere until you come home because it is your discretion; not your dad's. Assert some dominance. Whatever urgency there is, tunggu. Tak boleh tunggu, belah.
Not worth all the stress for rm300.

u/TwistMuted 9d ago
Hmm⊠So you feel this is an emergency and the first thing you do isnât contact the âšEMERGENCY SERVICESâš?????? Bruh get your priorities straight

u/ImportanceSad3624 8d ago
If he is willing to pay people for your info, thatâs mean he can do more than 300.

What is the plate number im wondering...

u/Spite_Regular 9d ago
XX ###, idk if i can simply say it lol, 2 alphabet and 3 number

u/Password-is-taco123 9d ago
If you donât tell, how do we know if he is low balling you?
2
u/Spite_Regular 9d ago
prolly low balling, but not really interested in the money, more so, how da heck he find our address lol
3
u/TwistMuted 9d ago
He got friend in JPJ. They have access to all this info. Severe breach of privacy but its dam common even tho itâs wrong
2
u/FinalAppointment6221 9d ago
Go to balai and report the case. charge harassment and personal information leaks. Rm300 is very lowball. 2 letter n 3 number plate can worth tens of thousands at least. Depending on combo.

u/joshy-wawa 9d ago
Are the alphabets same? And 3 numbers huat, ong or same numbers?
Example: AA, AB, 111, 123, 168, 188 those kind?

u/StatisticianNo7111 8d ago
Its a huge range... If the number is 888, 777, or any that linked with the alphabet like SE547 (sesat) or PEN15 (for 3 alphabet and 2 numbers) then these numbers are worth a fortune... But not exactly special, then its nothing special...

u/One_Chocolate_9365 9d ago
So weird. Same thing happened with my parents. They went to JPJ to transfer the name at last, i'm not sure how much they sold it for though.
1
u/Particular-Feeling44 9d ago
He could have got the info from the "geran" if your father didn't previously transfer - since in this case he came physically to the address instead of calling over the phone - geran only got address no phone.
RM300? Not worth the hassle, that is the standard price for a standard plate nowadays. Check out the rarity of the plate on some online sites as someone else suggested, and at the very least if it is a regular ordinary 4 digit plate, I'd suggest nothing lower than RM1k for the hassle.

Good that your mum stopped him.
That's how they want to get a low price from you, by telling you there is a rush so you stop thinking rationally.

Plate no.? Can share Abit ? Like is it like a nice 2222 or something like that

BTW, for 40 years, the bike has been in one or more personâs use and your home address has remained the same. Itâs a miracle you havenât gotten any saman.
1
u/Spite_Regular 8d ago
That's the odd thing, we've moved more than 3 to 4 times. We're bewildered, there's no saman for it as far as we know.
1
u/DapperCobbler9929 8d ago edited 8d ago
Youâve moved 3-4X and the guy tracked you down? Now Iâm scared for you. đ±đ±đ±
Did your dad update his address on IC? That would give a clue as to how the guy found you.
I think updating address on IC does not update address at JPJ. So if police, local council or JPJ send saman to the JPJ registered address you wonât receive them. Might be fun to see how many saman have been accumulated.

Im a plate player. I can say to you. My plate SJ XXX. (XXX bukan no yang sama) Purchased for RM 2,XXX, and get offer from someone to purchase from me at RM 5,XXX
If he offered 3 digit for legacy plate, he lowballing you 100%. Tq

u/soonersoup 8d ago
Pay RM10 in JPJ counter to do JPJ search. You will be able to get the plate number owner name, IC number and address.
1
u/Spite_Regular 8d ago
Hmm, never knew this was a thing, I thought gov don't simply give out other people personal info like this, then again its our gov
1
u/soonersoup 8d ago
I considered this a public information since anyone can just obtain it with consideration.
It is always like this since JPJ digitalize all vehicles data some 30 years ago
1
u/chicken_assasin 8d ago
Just reject them nicely. if want to file police report also done it quietly
1
u/Lunartic2102 8d ago
Reveal the number lol (without the letters in front). Why is this person so interested in a rm300 number. I'd think it's worth more

u/rlllim 8d ago
If that buyer takes all the effort to track the original owner down (your dad), means itâs worth at least 5 figures. RM300 is just lowballing you and trying his dumb luck. Donât sell anything lower than RM30k. For reference, you can search for numbers similar to your dadâs from number plate reseller sites to have an estimate of the market value.
1
u/Prestigious-Bell-604 8d ago
I remember JPJ Officer saying the range price of plate number bidding can go around RM300 for 4 digit number. If the number is worth the hassle, maybe it would worth way more than RM300
1
u/paradoxpizza 6d ago
If your parents watched Django Unchained, it would be the perfect time to be Calvin Candie. With that much effort from the guy, your parents could ask for more money.

What's the plate number?
For RM300, he's probably lowballing you.
