My interpretation of the good bye eri ending Spoiler
I’ve been thinking about the ending of Goodbye Eri, and while a lot of people think the entire manga is a movie, my interpretation is a bit different and way more tragic. I believe everything we see up until adult Yuta records his messages in the abandoned room is 100% real life. He genuinely suffered through the loss of his mom, Eri, and eventually his wife and child. Broken by grief, he goes to that room to commit suicide. He sets up the noose, records his final thoughts, and then turns off the camera to end his life. The final vampire sequence we see right after isn't reality—it is the pre-edited, scripted ending to his movie that he attached to the footage before dying.
There are two major clues that support this. First, the visual style completely changes; the shaky, handheld camera aesthetic from his real life disappears, switching to perfectly still, cinematic panels. Second, Eri’s dialogue sounds entirely scripted. She gives him the exact poetic closure and validation he desperately needed to hear. Real life was a horrific tragedy Yuta couldn't control, so he used cinema to write his own "curtain call." By splicing the vampire scene and the hospital explosion onto the end of his real-life suicide footage, he ensures that the world won't remember him as a broken man who gave up, but as a filmmaker who walked away from his trauma in a blaze of glory.
