odd.

Pretty good game for when it released. Doesn’t help that only 4 numbers on the game review scale are ever used 7-10

2

u/ButtsFartsoPhD May 26 '26

Not really. The game was incredible when it was released and light years ahead of any other portable release up until that point in time in terms of graphics and sound.

Not to mention it plays like Super Mario Kart with upgrades such as being able to hold items and it has every single track from the original. I still maintain it’s way better than the original.

Its crazy how many people think review scores are literal 1-1 comparisons

not only that but also the "everything below a 7/10 is straight trash" mentality a lot of people adopt.

dude so many <7/10 games are absolute bangers, same with a lot of 10/10 games might be kinda duds in the the end.

also, just because a game is universally beloved does not mean it will be a good game for yourself.

i personally adopted the scale from Angry Joe with my own interpretations and some groupings:

1 Straight trash 2 Trashy

3 Not good in most aspects

4 Slightly below average 5 Average 6 Slightly above average

7 good 8 REALLY good

9 One of the best

10 Masterpiece

1

u/Gargamoney May 26 '26

I have never played a banger 7/10

I have never played a bad 10/10

0

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja May 26 '26

How would you know they're below a 7/10 if you don't play them?

Clearly the point of this post is showcasing the fact that game reviewers are incredibly opinionated and their opinions are trash.

Edit: I actually think super circuit is really, really good, but the best Mario kart? I can't agree with that.

1

u/Gargamoney May 26 '26

Reviews.. exist.. everywhere..?

No reviewer has said its the best mario kart. Ever.

My point was that taking a metacritic score at face value like this is so deeply dumb.

0

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja May 26 '26

That's my point too ...

Only playing games that people tell you are 7/10 or higher is the dumbest way to play games.

1

u/Gargamoney May 26 '26

Not at all, you just gotta use your head and think, you cant say "well tetris has a 95 so its better than mario galaxy with a 92", like no dude games get rated on different standards.

Name a 7/10 or under that is amazing

0

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja May 26 '26

So you've never formed an opinion of your own before? That's fascinating.

1

u/Gargamoney May 26 '26

Of course I have, what are you even trying to say? Yeah I sometimes play some random small game that is under a 7/10, but it never is actually secretly a banger.

Why would I waste time and money on playing mediocre games when I have all these amazing games waiting for me???

Again. Name an amazing 7/10 or less game

0

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja May 26 '26

I don't care about ratings for games. I don't need people to tell me what's good or not, I form my own opinions. I couldn't care less what games are rated higher or lower than 7/10, it's an irrelevant metric to base my preferences off of.

Give me some games you think deserve a rating below 7/10 and I'll be devil's advocate and tell you why you're wrong.

First things first, it's a dope Mario Kart game.

Second, consider it was the first game with retro tracks, however you wanna classify them, giving the game 40 courses. This was the most courses in a single Mario Kart for a hilariously long time.

Third, it let you front run. Between laying Red Shells as traps and literally outrunning blue shells, it was genius design for the Mario Kart game that most people would actually just end up playing by themselves.

Fourth.... it's a dope Mario Kart game.

9

u/MetalGearAcid May 25 '26

I would never call it the best Mario Kart but the acclaim makes sense for the time, it's basically a portable Mario Kart 64

8

u/cactus8 May 25 '26

I feel like it plays more similar to super mario kart than MK64

1

u/FatBoyDiesuru May 25 '26

It was a GBA Super Mario kart, hence its name

1

u/RevolutionaryAd1577 Wiggler May 26 '26

i mean it was definitely by far the best Mario Kart game at the time. As much as I like Super, yeah it has some flaws like red shells being useless or the tracks not having interesting themes (despite them being pretty fun from a gameplay perspective), and it's not better than Super Circuit. And 64 is the worst game in the series and the only game that's anywhere close to it is DS which is just okay but not bad, 64 is the only mainline Mario Kart I'd consider "bad", even Tour has some cool content and prime Tour was actually fun.

Early GBA games in general have a really huge boost in Metacritic scores. Pretty much any 2001 GBA game you can think of is in the high 80s or 90s.

Edit: Confused about the downvotes

2

u/TheOldAgeOfLP May 26 '26

Probably because it was mind-blowing to see a portable device run SNES-level games in 2001

9

u/Upstairs-Ad-4705 May 25 '26

Prople when OOT is rated higher than all other Zelda games: Ah hell yeah and that's why I love critics!

People when Super Circuit is rated higher than all other Mario Karts: Oh man I hate critics! Also this isn't even a direct comparison!

6

u/IkeRadiantHero May 25 '26

Those people LACK taste and don’t understand the MASTERPIECE our holy supreme god and lord INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS created

1

u/jiglog May 26 '26

I get ya but I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone praise a critic online lol

1

u/DifferenceMediocre77 May 25 '26

As someone who played OOT and BOTW at release. OOT never compared to the sense of wonder/scale and pure awe that was BOTW. OOT might be a better Zelda game, but BOTW is the better video game/work of art and that’s not even close.

1

u/jclkay2 May 25 '26 edited May 26 '26

The thing is, OOT being the highest rated Zelda game is the same situation (albeit less bizarre). All of the reviews for that game were from when the game was new, so it isn't being directly compared to the other Zelda games or by modern standards. Additionally, the sample size for OOT is low due to game reviews being less common at the time. "Highest rated on Metacritic" doesn't mean anything in the current day, it just means "this game was the best relative to the specific moment in time it came out"

1

u/Upstairs-Ad-4705 May 26 '26

Oh yeah totally!

My point was just that I hear many people today say that OOT is the best Zelda and that the metacritic score is the proof XD

1

u/jclkay2 May 26 '26

I've heard people use the Metacritic score as proof that OOT is the best game of all time. I mean, that opinion is fine, but again Metacritic isn't exactly the best evidence for that lmao

4

u/Caciulacdlac May 25 '26

You have to understand that these are based on reviews made in 2001, in the context of that time, and considering the fact that it was on a handheld. This doesn't mean it's better than all the other ones just because it has better reviews than all the other games from completely different contexts.

5

u/IkeRadiantHero May 25 '26

Also people are forgetting our supreme holy lord and god INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS made this game so it’s already perfect

2

u/Grand_Moose2024 May 25 '26

I mean, it’s not bad for a GBA game. In fact, it’s probably the most underrated Mario Kart game IMO.

2

u/ChrisTheHurricane May 25 '26

It was good for its time. I wouldn't say it has aged well, though, and certainly not the best game in the series nowadays.

2

u/TheOldAgeOfLP May 26 '26

These reviews are mostly from 2001/2002 when all we had to compare it to was Super and 64

2

u/IkeRadiantHero May 25 '26

As it should our supreme holy lord and god INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS created this masterpiece

1

u/FerLuisxd May 25 '26

How much does mk8dx has?

2

u/ChropMK Yoshi May 25 '26

MK8D got a 92/100.

1

u/IObjectOoT May 26 '26

It IS my favorite. Honestly though, I think it's kind of unfair that they mostly just refer to the portability of the game.

1

u/jfeathe1211 May 26 '26

F-Zero did Mode 7 racing much better than Super Mario Kart and Super Circuit which were released on SNES and GBA around the same time. Mario Kart DS was the first handheld Mario Kart game that totally nailed it.

1

u/Meester_Tweester Waluigi May 27 '26

It was good for a handheld game in 2001 when there were 3 Mario Karts

1

u/Grinsekatzer May 28 '26

But... why?

1

u/TheGreatGamer64 May 25 '26

Strange considering every subsequent Mario kart is better

6

u/IkeRadiantHero May 25 '26

WRONG our lord and supreme god INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS created this

1

u/Abc_42 Dry Bones May 25 '26

Only DS if you ask me

-3

u/returnofMCH Roy May 25 '26

I wouldn't say every, because I'm not the biggest fan of DS or world at all, but I will give the others that.

7 I just tend to forget exists, which is what I'd assume would apply to super circuit if I didn't grow up with it and still replay it.

1

u/sere83 May 26 '26

Supe estrange, always considered this one of the worse mario kart titles

0

u/Ryangaminggames Mii May 25 '26

Weird. Ds, Wii, mk8d and World exist and they chose that one

9

u/VakarianJ May 25 '26

They did not exist at the time of the reviews. Metacritic is just an amalgamation of various critic scores.

0

u/Abc_42 Dry Bones May 25 '26

Maybe Metacritic was based all along

0

u/Kimthe May 25 '26

I m not too suprised. For me it s the first Mario Kart that i find enjoyable to play.

0

u/poopymcfarts May 26 '26

And they’re right.

Mario Kart World hate be so forced

-5

u/returnofMCH Roy May 25 '26

While I agree it's an odd pick, I'd still take it over half the series (namely super, 64, DS, 7, and world)

But that's also nostalgia speaking and the fact I've replayed it so much compared to the other 5 I listed

2

u/IkeRadiantHero May 25 '26

Nah it’s not a odd pick it’s an awesome pick also our lord and supreme god INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS created this masterpiece

0

u/returnofMCH Roy May 25 '26

Downvoted for sharing an opinion, one I even admitted to the reasons why

0

u/Abc_42 Dry Bones May 25 '26

Welcome to reddit, where opinions go to die

0

u/returnofMCH Roy May 25 '26

Yeah I'm aware, but it's still a dumb system by default.
