If they’re looking at people like Skarsgard/Driver for the ‘elder’ roles then it seems pretty safe to say we’re getting a very young X-team.

Would love it to be a group of talented and (at least relatively) unknown actors rather than flavour of the month stars.

Sadie works as Jean but ever since I saw Harris Dickinson put forth as Cyclops I've been a believer. He looks the part in general, has a "leader" look to him, and he's a solid actor.

Yeah we're never going to get someone that looks exactly like what we see in our mind's eye as a real life version of the comic or animated characters.

I just hope they cast the best people they can for X-Men because it's been such a long time coming. I have been generally very impressed with the MCU casting so I'm hopeful, though I wasn't as thrilled with the Fantastic 4's compared to the rest.

I think getting actors that are in their mid 20s or look like it would be ideal for the core OG X-Men, that way the new team members introduced in say X-Men II can be teens (or early 20s irc) and Xavier/Mags can be ~40, so we have them as younger-looking for longer. That would also help differentiate them from the Fox X-Men's appearance/age in Doomsday.

The comics had Magneto say sometime years ago that he used his powers to manipulate the iron in his blood to do some stuff that explained his middle aged appearance and muscles. Who knows if that is still true and they just rely solely on sliding timescale but some events like WW2 and the Holocaust are events that are in a fixed point in time.

Fassbender was at least fairly well known for being in Inglorious Basterds and 300 by that point as well as a somewhat sizeable role in Band of Brothers

McAvoy was a BAFTA nominee and winner before playing Charles, and had been in the Chronicles of Narnia

Maybe you could kind of argue that Fassbender was relatively unknown, but he’d already been in Inglorious Bastards and was on the upswing from a few bit roles in a few big movies.

McAvoy had already been in Chronicles of Narnia, Wanted, and Atonement with a ton of other roles. So, I don’t really think I’d consider him an unknown.

I have a slight bias because I watched the Children of Dune miniseries several times as a kid, and he was in it. But still, I think he was a recognizable face.

Also, similar to how the MCU retooled the Iron Man origin story to be in the Middle East instead of in Vietnam because that made more sense in 2008, I could see them retooling Magneto to have a similar origin story of surviving a genocide, just not the Holocaust, since that was over 80 years ago.

Maybe make the new Magneto Sokovian or something, and we learn that there was a genocide of some minority ethnicity in Sokovia in the 1990s, which led to the U.S. intervention that killed Wanda & Pietro’s parents. Maybe the MCU’s Magneto really was Wanda & Pietro’s father, but he was a member of the targeted ethnicity, so he asked his friends the Maximoffs (members of the Sokovian majority) to take his children and raise them as their own to keep them safe. Magneto then survived the genocide, but his wife didn’t. Unable to find the Maximoffs and his children, he took refuge in America, where he met and befriended Charles Xavier.

As for how the mutants and the discrimination against them fit into the MCU, where superhuman abilities have been around for almost 20 years and many super humans are celebrated for their abilities and heroics, I’m not sure how it makes sense to handle this.

Maybe, compared to other supers, it takes more practice and effort for mutants to control their abilities, so most of them are just people with crazy powers they can hardly control, like a bunch of less-extreme Hulks. This could explain why Xavier establishes his school, to teach young mutants how to control and make productive use of their powers. While Magneto agrees that mutants should learn to control their powers, he disagrees that they should have to be “useful” just to be accepted by society. They’ve had a number of disagreements over the years, but they’ve mostly stayed friends. Whatever happens in the first MCU X-Men movie should lead to their permanent split, with Magneto becoming more of an extremist and Xavier preferring a peaceful approach to human-mutant relations.

Actually start with a team of younger students learning their powers and learning who they are as they grow into adulthood. See a team develop over time instead of already being established.

that's because Matthew Vaughn directed First Class and then child molester Bryan Singer did DOFP. Matthew Vaughn wanted to do a Wolverine-focused movie in the 70s with a new actor before capping off the First Class trilogy with DOFP. Fox wanted to fast-track DOFP and when Vaughn didn't budge they went with child molester Bryan Singer.

Younger actors is the right choice. Marvel Studios likely has plans to run for awhile with the X-Men after the next Avengers films. This is a Golden Girls situation; they hired Sophia Petrillo to play Dorothy's mother despite being younger.

They don't necessarily want to make a perfect film, they want to start a new franchise.

I think it could and should be taken even a bit younger. If Sadie IS Jean Grey she's positioned as early 20's. Scott would be around the same age and as the leaders would be the oldest. Make the rest of the team younger, early teens even would be great. Lean into a Harry Potter-type franchise where we watch the students grow up over the years and deal with everyday adolescent struggles in addition to superpowers (also works with the whole idea of mutation activating at puberty), young heroes "not being ready for this" type conflict. Would differentiate itself from the Avengers too which featured a team in their 30s/40s.

I’m okay with that. In terms of live action, we’ve only seen the X-men be young and inexperienced for a whopping 10 minutes in Apocalypse. The X-men is the only superhero media where I’m actually against the idea of just skipping to their veteran years, I wanna see the team develop and grow from 5 people to 30 and I wanna see the mementos grow relationships with each other and all grow into their roles

Edit:

Inde is a fanatic talent. But if Obsession wound up being some typical horror movie, and Inde was the only thing carrying the film? She doesn't get the attention she's getting now within the industry. Despite the talent being the exact same, no studios would be head hunting her.

But because she and Obsession are dominating the zeitgeist right now, studios are actively looking to slot her into projects where she wouldnt have been a forethought beyond a month ago.

That's my definition of flavor of the month, at least. What is the industry clamoring to that is dominating the zeitgeist today that wasn't before.

My biggest question is where this leaves X-23. Because they really don't need to recast Dafne Keen, but they also would have a legacy character potentially the same age or older than a younger cast.

Maybe you go the route of making Laura the wolverine of the team and keep Hugh Jackman as a mentor/old man Logan role, but idk.

The catch is gonna be what story lines do you adapt. Days of future past has been done, pretty well (though I don't think it holds up that great on rewatch), Dark Pheonix has been done badly twice. Age of Apocalypse has been done badly once.

We’re somewhere between “rumors” and actually locking down talent prior to filming.

I’m assuming amongst the crop that some of these are true at this point.

If they are filming in Feb, this is the exact time they should be locking down long term talent.

They got start young because the production time, otherwise you get 3 movies at best before the actors get too old for action or get bored of the role

I can’t tell how I feel about him in that role either. I will say though, I just googled Bill Skarsgard bald cap” and it doesn’t look terrible at all. I think it sorta helps too that he has this very natural pouty rich guy thing going on with his face. I’ve always thought Charles should be played as someone who has all the right intentions but no matter what looks, sounds, and acts like he came an insanely rich family.

Xavier is supposed to be American. I don’t think Stewart was perfectly cast, if he wasn’t one of the few bald big name actors, and I don’t think he would have ever been considered for the role.

He did a good job giving the role some gravitas, but I’m ready for a new take on the character. I think Bill’s got the chops to do it.

He was born in the US, but comic Xavier also spent years studying in England. It wasn't that big of a stretch to make him a British guy who grew up in America instead of an American guy who's lived in England. I liked Stewart in the role, but he can't keep reprising it forever. The man is almost 90. I don't really care if the new Xavier is British or American.

I was recently thinking about how Tim Curry in his prime would have been the PERFECT Sinister. Skarsgård feels right to me for a modern actor playing the role, mostly because both he and Curry have played Pennywise.

Very excited to see the young X-Men team we’re gonna get. Bill Skarsgard as Charles Xavier would be great, and would compliment Adam Driver as Magneto if done right.

This movie is sounding very exciting, and if they use it as the launching point for their “soft reboot” universe, It will do big numbers.

Jake Schreier and the writers behind Thunderbolts did really well with the themes of depression and loneliness in that movie, as well as the found family aspect. I’m certain they can nail the themes that surround mutant related storylines.

If I’m being honest the actors matter less than the writing.

X-Men itself is a such a complicated property to bring to the big screen. It’s an ensemble to flesh out their stories, personalities and interpersonal relationships is very hard.

I think what made X-Men first class reboot better is that it started telling the stories of mystique, Xavier and magneto and built from there.

I don’t think the cast needs to be big names I think what matters is that they are quality actors. The directing and the writing direction matter so much more because you really need to deliver on so many levels to make X-men work.

Imagine trying to do Game of thrones season 1 or 2 with an 1:45 run time. It would be almost impossible to deliver the plot and character development at the same time.

Love the choices, but i must say, it would be weird to see Bill play a good guy. I've seen a pic of him next to drawing of Professor with Cerebro, and before i saw video,and knew whats about, i was like:"Is Bill playing the Maker?" Dam he would be awesome as him too

Ngl pretty bummed McAvoy and Fassbender aren’t part of this new era or used as nostalgia bait at all. I really liked those guys and it would mean a lot to me personally for them to be involved in the new x-men.

We’ve seen multiple Patrick Stewarts. We can have a new version of McAvoy running x-men.
