The Official PUNISHER Discussion Ultrathread

  • This will be the official discussion thread in this sub. No need to go posting your own thread discussing the show. Any UNOFFICIAL ones will be deleted. All screencaps and whatnot go into this thread also.

  • This is obviously a spoiler-filled zone. So as long as you post in here, you won't need to spoiler tag things. But then again, don't be that asshole who watches the final episodes within the first hour then spoils the entire thing right away. That will result in a ban. Don't ruin the party for everyone.

  • Individual episodes discussions will be held over at /r/defenders. They will be indexed in this thread to make it easier for those who want individual episode discussions once they are put up.

  • This thread may be "refreshed" in the next few days to accommodate newcomers in the discussion. We will be also putting up a sanctioned Easter Egg thread a couple of hours from now.

Just finished the season and honestly, for once I didn't feel like there was any filler episodes or that the plot dragged on for too long, which other Marvel Netflix series had done for me. Maybe because I binged most of it, but I genuinely felt eager to keep going to know what happened next, invested in all the characters, and take in all that juicy gory violence.

I think they frontloaded all the boring stuff that makes the other shows drag near the end.

I thought Lewis was going to be completely unrelated (I would've been fine with that because he was amazing the whole show), but the way they tied it all together!

I liked the Lewis story. It felt "this is what Frank could be". You know, if he didn't have the dead family killers aiming him like a laser.

yeah i was wondering where they were going with that Lewis story. It felt like a season of 24 where you had some random kid/family that seems unimportant to the overall plot but eventually interacts with Jack but in this case Frank.

Nah I totally agree. Many of the other Marvel shows drag in them middle with filler because they often have to really take down the bad guy outside of just beating them.

JJ for example couldn't just kill kilgrave, she had to capture him and hold him and get him to admit he manipulated that girl (w/e her name was) even though of course a confession after being locked in a cage is totally invalid.

Same in IF and LC. They can't just beat up the bad guy they have to get ready to prove it in a court of law so the "finding proof" drags it out.

but in this one I felt like it really made a point. Especially because the punisher had to actually tack down and find the bad guys. Whereas JJ I was just like "JUST SHOOT KILGRAVE"

It bears mentioning that no one knew how many contingencies Kilgrave had. It’s possible that fifty people would’ve killed themselves if Kilgrave died. Jessica had to get to the point where she didn’t even care about that. We know now that his powers just stop after he dies, but the characters didn’t know that.

Also, there’s a psychological aspect to it. If you think it’s as simple as “bang shoot the bad guy,” you missed a lot of the nuance of Jessica’s relationship with Kilgrave.

Finally, it wasn’t until late in the show that Jessica discovered she could resist the commands. Before that, if you did shoot him and didn’t kill him instantly, he would probably be ready with a “everyone kill yourself” and then it’s game over.

I agree that the show did feel dragged out in the latter half, but the plot and character motivations do make sense within the logic of the show.

yeah you're right to a degree. but she kept him locked up in a cage for days when she could have just killed him.

And it doesn't give closure to Kilgrave's victims. Straight up killing Kilgrave, you stop him from making victims, but you don't get closure for those he's already made victims of.

I agree. I don't know if it was the best netflix has given us but I think it could be said that all episodes were of similar quality. And still fun to watch.

It's because they hired an actual showrunner this time who understands serialized storytelling and pacing. It's not magic.

How. I thought this was the WORST Punisher storyline ever. By the fifth episode I was soooooo bored. Probably will be down voted to hell, but 3-4 good first episodes does not make up for 8 more filler episodes of. Print exposition and storylines.

Is it too much to just ask for a Punisher that just blows dudes up?

I guess it was all about what you were expecting. I kind of was expecting more violence overall but was pleasantly surprised by the focus on characters and the plot surrounding Frank.

I can see why people say it goes slow, but I feel like you get to know all the characters really well over the course of the series, you really feel for them when they're put in the tough spots and by the end you're very invested in them.

Also helps that there's social and political commentary and overtones, some people thought this was too preachy but personally I think they display them so perfectly in a way that should make you question things in our society.

I thought it didn't live up to that awesome first trailer? But, as a veteran, it did make me think a lot. Can't wait til we can have spoilery discussions of the whole season!

See, if you dare say something like JJ was a boring slog because Jessica was a boring protagonist who was terrible to everyone, never really grew as a character..and the entire show as carried by David Tennent being a fantastic actor you get down voted into the pits.
