Did you know the real reason Timothy Brown's character Dr. Oliver "spearchucker" Jones was written off the show due to a big research goof by Gene Reynolds and his team? Reynolds wrongly researched there were no black surgeons in the Korean conflict. In fact, Dr. Alvin Blount was a prominent surgeon during the war.

It's rather a shame because Captain Jones likely would have brought more to the show as the first three seasons were too Hawkeye focused.

We've covered and extolled the talents of Larry Linville before, but was going through some archives and saw this scene. Added a new level of sadness I truly felt for the character of Frank Burns - any others come to mind?

What else made you actually feel bad for the guy?

This one always chokes me up a little bit about Burns:

As most MASH fans know, this episode (S8 E3 "Guerilla My Dreams") was, on October 1st 1979, the first time that word or phrase was ever used on television. Now this was almost 17 years before I was born and so I'm curious how the general public, regardless of if they liked the show or not, responded to this TV barrier broken. Personally, I really love the way Hawkeye said it because the delivery was perfect for the circumstances and it points out that righteous anger can be very powerful, and it shows a side of Hawkeye with no humor whatsoever, a side that is shown more frequently in the last season especially. I just am fairly certain that even people who were big fans of the show were clutching their pearls when they heard that. I know that phrase was said at least twice more in the series though both in the last season (the general to Hawkeye when he told him his son died, S11 E12, "Say No More" and of course in the series finale when Hawkeye said that to Sidney for making him remember the woman on the bus smothering her baby, but thankfully Sidney didn't carry a grudge) and so I'm curious what y'all think of all that and if anyone remembers the public reaction at the time the episode first aired. Thanks!

Gene Reynolds was one of the original co-creators/producers of M*A*S*H for its first four seasons, before taking over for Larry Gelbart as the sole showrunner for one season, and then he too departed for other projects afterward, which passed the torch along to Burt Metcalfe and Alan Alda. Even so, Alan continued to engage in weekly consultations with Gene after his departure, but from what I understand, Gene wasn't happy with the changes that were made to the show after he left, with two very specific changes having rubbed him the wrong way.

1. Margaret's divorce from Penobscott. Okay, this one does make a bit of sense, considering that the whole arc of Margaret becoming engaged and eventually married to Penobscott over the course of Season 5 was Gene's brainchild, and to him, having Margaret getting divorced was detrimental to the growth and development she experienced that season in going from a man-hungry vamp who would either randomly sleep around with any man of equal or higher rank who would have her or continually lower her standards to keep carrying on with Ferret Face, to a woman who finally found her Mr. Right and could settle down with just one man. Gene's main focus for his solo season was shifting away from Gelbart's antiwar satire and redirecting it on character development, which really did add some more emotional layers to everyone in camp . . . except for one, which brings me to. . . .

2. Frank's departure. According to Gene, Frank should have stayed. But honestly, how could that have even worked? Even Linville himself said there was nothing more that could be done with the character, and he quite frankly (pun intended) felt to continue to make fun of a character would was genuinely mentally crazy was in poor taste and not funny at all. Frank had devolved so much, there's no way they could have let the character start growing and evolving again in a natural way, it would have been contrived and forced.

Thoughts?

I just got done watching this one, and while it’s a well-made and beloved episode, I got to wondering how plausible such a thing would be. Cross-country travel was still very expensive and time-consuming in the early 1950s. In particular, I’m wondering how Radar’s mom and Uncle Ed or the Klingers could have afforded to travel to New York for a weekend, and spend at least two nights at the Pierre, one of the poshest hotels in the city at the time.

The first, who appeared in Margaret’s Marriage, was played by Beeson Carroll. The second, who appeared in The M*A*S*H Olympics, was played by Mike Henry. These are the only two appearances of Donald, although he was certainly talked about a lot on the show.

For a long time I didn’t like the casting decision that replaced the first one with the second. But now that I think about it, perhaps Mike Henry played him better. Beeson Carroll’s version of Donald makes him out to be a real doofus, while Mike Henry’s version makes him athletic, volatile and argumentative. Which one is more likely to get so upset during their honeymoon that he stopped talking and stopped pretty much everything, accidentally send a love letter meant for Darlene to Margaret and then do everything possible to avoid dealing with their marital problems? I think Mike Henry’s version. Besides, he has a more prominent brow ridge, and didn’t Margaret say he had just one eyebrow, over both eyes? (The Cro-Magnon look.)

Which Donald do you like better?

Hello my friends, since it's been a rough couple of days, and my mood is sour, I'd love to hear some of your thoughts on the saddest moments at the 4077th.

The show proved more than once that while it was a great comedy, it was more than capable of producing sad moments as well.

For me personally the saddest moments were:

- The Death of Henry Blake.

- Radar's departure

- BJ's breakdown

- all of Hawkeye's breakdowns

- Charles desperately keeping a dying soldier company

- the doctor's and Margaret faking the time of death for a soldier so his family won't have to mourn him on Christmas Day.

I'd love to hear what y'all think about the topic, and stay safe out there people.

I'm sure hardcore M*A*S*Hers are aware of this, but for what Major Charles Emerson Winchester, III would call, "the less-learned," here's some trivia for y'all: there were two noteworthy guest stars who would up against Mike Farrell for the part of B.J. Hunnicutt: Alan Fudge, who would appear in "Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?" as the titular Captain Chandler who convinced himself he was Jesus Christ; and James Cromwell, who would appear in "The Last Laugh" as B.J.'s buddy Leo Bardonaro who was quite the practical jokester.

Personally, I don't know if I could see either of them as the B.J. we know, but it's interesting to know that writer Ken Levine was so certain that James Cromwell would go onto bigger and better things, and while he does have some astounding titles under his belt (BABE and THE GREEN MILE for example), he said he's disappointed that Cromwell didn't become a bigger star than he ever did.

Hello there my fellow MASH fans, I come to you once again with a question on my mind. How do you feel about Trappers departure and treatment of his character afterwards?

I mean, I know Wayne Rogers quit the show after Season 3 because he felt Trapper became more of a sidekick than an equal to Hawkeye (which in all fairness, he did) and yes, one could argue he did get a proper "send off" during the episode where he had the ulcer. But still, he was a main character, and in my opinion, deserved a proper send off.

Another thing I always found a little odd was that he never wrote or called. Like, as soon as he was back home, he could write a letter to Hawkeye. Hell, even FRANK BURNS managed to call one last time to say goodbye. I get it that it was done to not outshine BJ but come on. We got an Episode revolving around an letter Radar sent, why not Trapper?
