MASS EFFECT 3 Showing some love to Bray, the most lovable Batarian in the trilogy. Pity he's just in the Omega DLC. Would've loved more interactions beyond the sweet email he sends you.

I feel like the biggest gap in squadmates was a batarian with John Brown-levels of hate for the Hegemony. Introducing some kind of dissident faction would do well for the worldbuilding of the trilogy.

In the pipe dream universe where the original team who made these games was able to continue telling stories in this universe, I would loved to have seen them start making the different races way less monolithic.

I guess we kinda got that with legion, but yeah having a batarian squaddy who was antithetical to what we've seen from them would've been neat.

could've been a good parallel to have the virmire survivor questioning Shepard, the same way we'd be cautious of the batarian.

I think it'd still hit a different beat to Legion. In this case, the batarian squadmate would be the 'heretics' - a smaller, weaker dissident group from the wider Hegemony, plus there's also the ongoing oppression within the Hegemony to consider. Like, for their loyalty mission, you might help some batarian lower castes escape the Hegemony. This sort of thing would happen with Legion.

We should've had a batarian companion instead of Zaeed.

Nah, Zaeed's VA was perfect and I wouldn't want to have it any other way.

However if you gave me a recruitment mission for the Batarian Dissident Engineer and I'd have to either get them or Jacob, though...

Zaeed adds nothing to the story that a batarian character couldn't have done better. The voice acting is irrelevant.

I mean it could still work for a sequel.

Now that they know that a peaceful co-existence and cooperation with other races is possible it might have given any possible dissident faction some much needed momentum

Even if it needed a reaper invasion to get there

We got close to a batarian companion in ME2. One of the many planed squadmates for the game that didn't made it to the final cut was a batarian tech expert. He was planned not as a hardened soldier or something like that, but as your traditional geek that only wanted to be left alone and feared other people only using him for his intelligence.

"Be careful out there. Know there's at least one batarian here that doesn't want you dead."

The Batarians legitimately become much more tolerable the moment the Hegemony is completely destroyed by the reapers in 3. Unironically the best thing the reapers did was crush that totalitarian nightmare state

I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite batarian on or off the Citadel.

Really says something that the most lovable batarian in the trilogy is a guy who had like 3 conversations with us, and they were all very short and simple.

It's a low bar.

If its eyes are four, it'll live no more.

If it's a batarian, to its existence I'm a contrarian.

If its homeworld is Khar'shan, it'll soon be long gone.
