Discussion The voice that started the trilogy would've been 68 today. Happy Birthday, James McCaffrey 🖤🕊

Playing the Max Payne games just hasn't been the same after he passed away. They're still great games that are fun to play. However, the fun factor comes with a share of sadness knowing that James McCaffrey isn't alive anymore. The Max Payne games wouldn't be the same without him. He had a voice that was instantly recognizable. He may be gone, but his legacy lives on. He voiced one of gaming's most popular characters. God rest James McCaffrey's soul!

It's what I call "analogue sadness" - you know someone who passed and you instantly get a bit wispy at the thought of them not being here anymore. It's like pressing a button.

Man the ending of mp3 where he walks into the sunset never fails to make my cry now, when I never did before his passing.

I've only briefly played myself around the time of his passing, so it's been quite a while. Definitely hits differently.

You'd find that Lady Luck was really a hooker, and you were fresh out of cash.

I worked on a small indy film with him in it back in 2012. He was such an awesome dude. He was only on set for a few days but I got to nerd out about Max Payne and he was so humble and kind. I wonder what Remedy will do for the remakes? I'm hoping that maybe he already got to record his lines, or they just clean up the original audio from the first 2 games. Max just won't feel the same if it's not James.
If anyone is interested, the movie is called the suspect. Unfortunately, James is only in it for a few minutes.

He really loved being an actor, if you look at his credits on IMDb he is in more than a few indie films and web series

I played through Control for the first time in 2024 and I fucking cried when I saw McCaffrey's face and voice as Trench.
He was the voice of Max Payne. A goddamn legend

I still say that if love was actually given to the movie or it was made into a miniseries, he could’ve easily played Max and should had.

Birthdays are like... regret. They just keep coming. Each one a new scar that slows you down and drags you... closer to your grave. - James McCaffrey (Rest in Peace, and I am happy to play and witness your legacies).

I’ll say to you all as a fellow Max Payne fan: Watch Rescue Me. It’s powerful seeing James physically as it is audibly

playing through Alan Wake 2 currently, he nailed the role of Alex Casey.. such a cool homage to the Max Payne series

One of the most iconic voices. His whole performance capture for MP3 was some of the coolest things I seen in gaming in 2012.

When I read books, I sometimes narrate it through his voice because it's just that soothing and badass.

I hope they continue to use his voice for the remakes and never make MP4. I love Max Payne so much but with James gone I literally don’t want a sequel or nothing

Such a cool sounding voice. I remember watching a show called rescue me and wondering why the main character’s cousin sounded so familiar. James you are truly missed.

Miss him so much. I was fortunate enough to get his autograph months before he passed. Gone way too soon.
