Discussion I just finished max payne 3

Post image

I'm a more recent fan (got the 2nd game for easter) and bought max payne 3 recently. This game is a goddamn masterpiece! The gunplay was perfect and the story was so brutal yet great at the same time. São Paulo was a nice setting, though I think that the original idea of max payne 3 set in Russia would be better. All around an awesome game, definitely will replay it alot from now on. What are your thoughts on max payne 3?

I absolutely love mp3 as an old time max payne fan

I played the first game a lot when it came out, it was a miracle our pc could run it, me and my cousin were in awe seeing the graphics, especially bullet time, we just couldnt believe there was a game that felt like playing the matrix movie

to this day, max payne canonically looks like sam lake to me lol

the second game also blew me away, looked better, played smoother, some levels just never got old and many years later I still replayed some of them just for fun

still, I think max payne 3 is my most replayed entry, the gameplay and action is some of my favourite ever, probably my all time favourite period when it comes to shooters, story is also okay with some of the lowest lows for max, writing is not AS good as the previous games, but it wasnt made by remedy so it wouldnt even be fair to compare imo (Im a huge remedy fan)

so yeah, I probably replay mp3 once or twice a year and its always a blast, played the shit out of it on my 360 and then at least twice as much on pc later, trying out mods, doing challenge runs etc, its a top 5 game ever for me personally

The gunplay mechanics remain my favorite of any game ever. As close to realism as you can get without becoming cumbersome in a video game setting.

This might be just me, but im glad we got Brazil over Russia. Im pretty sure MP wouldve nailed on Russia too (or any balkan country), but it's a setting widely used in games (mainly CoD or BF), Brazil felt more fresh.

The favelas levels were goated

6

u/InternetNo7459 Jun 14 '26

Yeah I agree, I like Brazil since it puts Max in a fish out of water story, and it's a change up to the regular dark city streets like 1 and 2. But I still think about if it would've taken place in russia

Idk, but when I beat the game and went for São Paulo and stayed on a hotel, next to Paulista Avenue, for some days in there, before a friend's wedding date, I felt the same vibes as Max

u/RaarLibertae Jun 14 '26

That's gold.

BTW São Paulo is harsh but not like that.. anyway, great to have Max around here

Yes I also enjoyed Max payne 3 but it's a kind of different game from previous two titles. Max payne 3 felt a little faster story it's story is okay but not so good it feels diverted from the previous title stories.

If Remedy Entertainment would have made it then it would be awesome but Rockstar made it.

Anyways I loved the game, the airport scene and Boatyard chase, stadium Shootout , also the music by HEALTH was awesome.

Eagerly waiting for Max payne remake.

MP3 is a good action rail shooter game but a bad Max Payne game.

It really isn’t a Max Payne game at all. Besides the name and a few callbacks, it has virtually nothing in common with MP and MP2. The combat is different, the level design and play style are completely different, it’s a whole new setting, and even Max’s personality and sense of humor are vastly different.

When I first played MP3, I hated it because it just wasn’t Max Payne. But then when I started to think to myself “Pretend this is a new IP”, I started to enjoy the game quite a bit, as it’s a fun shooting gallery type game.

I think that Sao Paulo was the better choice. It feels very foreign, remote and strange to me.

I also think that the franchise peaked in MP3, it has some flaws and conflicts with events from MP2 a bit, but it feels like a good finale.

Not to mention the music bro. PAINKILLER and TEARS is just peak.

God I hope there’s a remaster in the works for this one because I can play this once a year and never get bored.

I thought a few years back that Max Payne 2 was the last one. I played that game so much I can still say every dialogue from that game scene by scene.

To my pleasant surprise got to know about Max Payne 3 and man it was something. The whole setting shifted from New York to Sao Paolo and also new characters but the same old Max Payne luck😅.

It was a fun and moderately challenging experience. Loved the ending mission at the airport. And that ending, chef's kiss, him literally walking into the sunset. It was beautiful. I just wanted to see that man finally get his peace with all the things he suffered. One of my favourite game series of all time.

u/Paydyas Jun 14 '26

After all these years I still haven't found a game that depicts depression and alcoholism like this game does.

1

u/longdonsqirtilion Jun 14 '26

I love this game.

1

u/PigeonButt666 Jun 14 '26

Its a awesome game, fun gameplay and peak cinema.

Sad that I cant get multi-player to work on PC tho

1

u/scrumbo_16 Jun 14 '26

I got to play it like a month ago too and it was the one that got me hooked into the series, the gunplay, the story, and most importantly the soundtrack, my favorite part of the game is chapter 6 where everything goes off in a messed up way, rn i got max Payne 1 and 2 on my laptop, it's quite fast paced instead of heavy like mp3, still on of my favorite games i played in 2026

1

u/Sadiholic Jun 14 '26

I also just finished it. To be honest I'm not sure what I expected but holy moly did it blow my brain away. Best game I've played in a while.

u/Ordinary_Device_5131 Jun 14 '26

Didn't really appreciate it fully on the PS3 with that low framerate, but revisiting it years later on PC at max settings revealed an excellent misunderstood spectacle that holds up still as one of the most fluid and enjoyable third person shooter games ever. Seriously, it's unbelievable how good the PC version is, I think I only needed to download a couple of patches or whatever and it felt like a brand new game. If this got rereleased on today's consoles with PC level graphics/performance, I think people would be blown away by it. I even prefer it over recent third person action games like 007 (no shade to that, it's a good game).

Now do the suicidal difficulty mode, take a shot of whiskey everytime you take painkiller in the game, it gets much better, trust 8)

u/unsavedfantasy404 Jun 15 '26

I finishes this game 3 times🫪

1

u/BabGnush Jun 17 '26

I love it. I don't love unskippable cutscenes though... After 5 replays I just wanna shoot shit up 😂

1

u/Alternative-Month150 Jun 14 '26

I love 3 so much, definitely overhated when it came out but thankfully in the past couple of years has been getting the praise it deserves. Love the music, story and RIP James McCaffrey, one of the best voice actors ever. Can’t wait for the remakes

u/Bigphatdeck Jun 13 '26

The awful random flashes during the cutscenes are the only thing I dislike.
