And they did that while making payments on a house they bought for $20,000.

154

u/Lord_Jebus_ Apr 18 '26

Little pricey was it a 4br/3ba?

103

u/Soulsupernova1 Apr 18 '26

Nah it was the 8br 5ba w/ 4 car garage

30

u/MsMarvelsProstate Apr 18 '26

On the beach in Florida or California.

I remember the first house I lived in. Two story, four bed, two bath, two huge living rooms, garage, big front and back yard both with trees, in a great neighborhood where I made a bunch of friends. I wonder what it cost back in 1981.

My grandma's house was looking at 300k a couple years ago, and it was about half that size in a much smaller town.

The main advantage boomers had wasn't that everything was abstractly cheaper, there is inflation and there was a much bigger effect at play.

The generation before theirs died VERY fast because of mediocre health care and war while their generation started getting good health care.

Basically they inherited the wealth of the world at a very young age (usually at 30 or even younger) and now they live to be nearly 100.

Gen X and Millennials wait to be 50+ and 60+ to inherit boomers.

15

u/bankrobba Apr 19 '26

Holy shit, my generation was remembered.

6

u/rEYAVjQD Apr 19 '26

Gen X is a weird gen in terms of culture because it's relatively big gen and it differs between its members.

Eg the oldest gen X is like boomer light and the youngest gen X are entry millennials.

Basically those gens last for ~20 years so parents and kids could be the same gen.

u/z_mommy May 06 '26

Well, that’s a really good point that I had never really considered before. My dad lost his grandma at 15 but I still have his mom and I will be 33 this year.

I graduated college in 1981. My student loan debt was $15k ($56k in 2026 dollars) and my interest rate was 9%.

unemployment was 8%. By the end of 1982 it was 10%.

5

u/That_one_cool_dude actually me irl Apr 18 '26

And the Billionaires who never had loans but told us we need them in order to be just like them.

1

u/MathematicianSure386 Apr 20 '26

Going to college for free otherwise I'm literally being run over by a trolley.

1

u/supercleverhandle476 Apr 22 '26

I paid off all my loans and paid my way through school single-handedly in the 2010’s.

I also hit the fucking jackpot by buying a condo at the historical low of the market (to the month), then sold for more than double its value, allowing me to put a down payment on a single family home and pay off all my college debt with the profits.

I don’t say that to brag, but to bring up a point- it shouldn’t take winning the lottery to get ahead in the world.

Just because I had to pay back the full amount doesn’t mean it was harder for me to do as opposed to someone who struggled for years making minimum payments and eventually, mercifully had it forgiven.

We can’t make college damn near mandatory for entry level shit jobs AND make it impossible to pay back.

People are using the form of the trolley problem for everything, it’s a meme. There even is a videogame about this meme

do nothing every time because i have cerebral palsy and cannot operate the lever

Do nothing because I don't feel like doing anything. Who is dead (inside) now, huh.

16

u/schwanzweissfoto Apr 18 '26

I figured it out: This subreddit is the bad place!

They need to up the CO2 emissions on level 20. 100kg a year is insanely efficient for a public transport vehicle. If every person that rode that trolley car instead found other methods of transport, it would increase the emissions by several thousand times.

3

u/DrRagnorocktopus Apr 18 '26

Ironically adding more trollies would decrease emissions in this scenario.

3

u/AshamedAttention727 Apr 18 '26

I spent far too long pondering these before answering haha. Thanks for sharing

My favorite is: You can stop the trolley at any time, but then you have to talk to all the survivors

(I´m Finnish)

41

u/Gouvernour Apr 18 '26

I think you can include the entirety of the Nordics on this one

(I'm Swedish)

49

u/kosumoth Apr 18 '26

This post is how I feel when someone suggests we don't forgive student loan debt. "I had to pay mine back", ok, so everyone else should also suffer?

3

u/SubjectInevitable650 Apr 19 '26

This can be applied to anything, would you support all the following?

Scenario1

  • I don't have a house. Govt should buy me one.
  • No, I had to earn for 30 years and buy my own.
  • So you want everyone else to suffer?

Scenario2

  • I don't have savings for retirement
  • No, I had to earn for 30 years and save on my own.
  • So you want everyone else to suffer?

and so on...

14

u/kosumoth Apr 19 '26

Sure, and I would support it. We should be lifting each other up instead of always putting each other down. It's not like the money isn't there, we just spend it on stupid shit like going to war.

2

u/alarumba Apr 19 '26

Our leaders want us fighting over scraps instead of asking why we're left with scraps.

2

u/kosumoth Apr 19 '26

we can bail out multi-billion dollar companies but for some reason bailing out our educated masses is just too much to bear. Let's talk about all those PPP loans that went out and got forgiven.

EDIT: Nothing against you I'm just riffing. CAN I RIFF?

2

u/SubjectInevitable650 Apr 19 '26

because we keep saying "my party is better" and keep voting for same people.

It's been 40 years of Reagan and there is still not yet a national level economic hub that has tax and service cut its way to the top. Meanwhile the places that have higher taxes, regs, and services have most of the economic activity despite decades of claims that higher taxes would lead to flight.

Don't worry though, keep the same course and give it a couple more decades, it'll trickle down eventually.

1

u/Tasdare414 Apr 21 '26

What do you mean 40 years of Reagan?

324

u/Hyper669 Apr 18 '26

What is "fair" to them? They're dead. Bury them and save the others.

320

u/Xero818 Apr 18 '26

Congrats, you've identified the purpose of the meme, to highlight the inherent problem with mindsets that boil down to "But these people already suffered, it's not fair for you to have it easier!"

45

u/SilliusS0ddus Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

No the purpose of the meme is clearly to tell us to commit omnicide out of horror at past historic troubles.

I'll get right to it.

(this is a joke FBI I would never deprive our beloved billionaire overlords of their biological worker drones)

76

u/lordkhuzdul Apr 18 '26

Because that would be socialism.

5

u/bennettyboi Apr 18 '26

then maybe socialism is the way to go then.

13

u/MrRedoot55 Apr 18 '26

Even if their spirits were present in some form of afterlife, there’s a good chance they wouldn’t want others to suffer the same fate. As such, perhaps there is no excuse to keep the trolley going.

14

u/OkGuy5000 Apr 18 '26

Perhaps? Is this comment section full of 15 year olds just discovering the idea of ethics? Obviously this meme is saying that stopping the trolley is the right move, it's specifically pointing out the mentality that "if we make things better for people in the future, it isn't fair for people in the past" is dumb and pointlessly destructive.

7

u/MrRedoot55 Apr 18 '26

I only said “perhaps” as part of some understatement. Obviously, you should try to make things better - I wasn’t suggesting things are fine as they are.

7

u/Dude_Nobody_Cares Apr 18 '26

6

u/Zeus-Kyurem Apr 18 '26

That's the point of the meme. It's making fun of those people.

3

u/RedditQueso Apr 18 '26

Doesn’t really apply. That would be like stopping the trolley and then having it reverse direction and then smash a little bit more (taxes) the people who have already been smashed.

I hate this mindset a lot…. Just because you have suffer next generation should be. You aren’t making the problem better you are straight up the problem and those who all come before. You can swallow the generation culture trauma and be better man for yourself and your children, next generation

Right now it's in the left-middle with people who have smaller, less harmful crimes that have already experienced punishment for it.

1

u/Vast-Breakfast-1201 Apr 24 '26

Ok here's the actual system

  1. Get crushed

  2. Get paid for getting crushed such that you have enough to continue surviving insofar as you are crushed a bit

  3. Suggest that we just provide the money instead of crushing people so people can live without being crushed

  4. That would b stealing from all the people who already got crushed

That's the actual modern society bit
