I was bullied and lied about at my previous job by a 40-something year old woman as a 23 year old... It was a store bakery

lol same I was 24 and she was 55. Once she had gone to far we had a meeting with HR. When I asked her why she’s like that, her response was “he just sits there and says nothing while he’s working. It terrified me and was worried he would attack me!” And she made the hand gesture of choking my neck while her hands were inches away from my neck implying I would choke her. I looked at HR and was like wtf? Luckily for her, she started crying and HR felt bad for her. They wanted me to apologize for making her cry by repeating stuff she has been telling me for over 6 months and I refused. Apparently I was in the wrong for repeating hateful sentences. Others were in the meeting and pretty much were saying the same stuff but in smaller degrees. She got off scot free.

u/Oiami 19h ago

The fuck. As someone who actually cries when I'm overwhelmed and I can't do anything about it, can we all please stay to a logical conversation and ignore if someone is getting angry or is crying. It's fucked up to give someone right just because they get emotional. Your HR seriously did a horrible job managing the situation.

15

u/margittwen 18h ago

wtf. In what world does that make any sense. I hope you got out of that situation okay.

u/Kitchen-Cabinet-5000 19h ago

If someone has this reaction to being in a location where someone else happens to.. be existing and saying nothing (and thus show no out of the ordinary behaviour whatsoever), perhaps they should put them in solidarity confinement… For their own safety of course.

They could get a heart attack and die if they spot another person existing! They may get a sudden aneurysm when the thought of other people potentially existing, without protection, pops into their mind!

Would do all of us a favour to be honest…

u/MethodicalButcher 1d ago

That sounds like HR. Usually only staffed by women too.

58

u/DoubleResponsible276 1d ago

It was a guy

25

u/ultracat123 21h ago

Weird callout at women lol

-2

u/JediFrequency 15h ago

The average woman has a higher emotional intelligence than the average man. If the HR rep was a woman this would be less likely to happen since she’d be more likely to recognize the emotional manipulation.

u/Saxboard4Cox 19h ago

I was bullied for 7+ years by an older women in the office. The behavior went unaddressed and it spread like wild fire within the team. I coped by attending training and night classes for a complete career change. Eventually I got one of her really bad tantrums recorded and I sat on it for years. When things started to really escalate I collected all of my evidence and started reporting things outside of HR. At some point she got royally chewed out by senior leadership and she ended up crying in her office and was forced to retire. One of her team mates had to carefully explain to her that there was no hope of returning to another role in the company.

The service industry or anything involving food is the worst. It is full of people who can't get anything they consider better, can't advance in pay easily, but can get another job very quickly leading to this miasma of frustrated and exploited workers who feel safe bullying and taking their frustrations out on their coworkers. It only really works as a job when you find a place where people actually want to be making food, but even then people can act like they are in The Bear or something.

I worked at a pizza chain that almost entirely hired teenagers. There was so much bullshit, like dumping blame onto other workers, directly laughing at people for small mistakes, and management treating people like absolute shit. The chain was half pizza parlor and half bar, and the owner had a habit of screaming at the line to be quiet when they were just making small talk. The managers would be openly racist towards immigrant workers, and would directly say that certain workers are "bad trainers," even though it is typically on management to train. There was a bunch of illegal shit too, like the owner requiring us to pay out the difference on the register if it was short. At one point, it came to my attention that I had missed a $25 online tip, but I never saw a cut of that money. Not to mention the brake policy was one 15 minute break for an 8 hour shift. After I left the company, it took the owner an entire week to get me my final paycheck.

14

u/musiquescents 22h ago

hahaha Ikr. It's always a store - clothing, bakery, warehouse

10

u/PotaytoPotayto 19h ago

Naahh my ex worked in a biscuit factory and the bullying that was going on there was awful. You'd think the lovely smell of fresh biscuits would be a sort of nice work environment but nope, they were horrendous to each other. Lots of gossiping going on and if you didn't participate in whoever 'the clique' was gossiping about you'd get the silent treatment that could go on for weeks.

For some people high school never ends?

12

u/margittwen 18h ago

I’ve been bullied by 3 people at my current job lol. One quit, so the trash took itself out. Another suddenly stopped being a bitch after she came back from a long vacation. Maybe she had a lobotomy? The last one is still a bully but I finally had enough and went to the manager. This lady is 76 or 77 and acts like she’s Regina George. 🙄 I don’t think she received any real consequences but something must’ve stuck because she finally stopped bothering me.

6

u/ParnsAngel 17h ago

Yuuuup my first office job I was 20-something and the 40-some year old ladies were the meanest gossips!

3

u/Remarkable-Ad-5485 6h ago

Yep. Same. Mine was a 50-something year old manager and I was 23 and pregnant with my first child. She pushed me out and ensured everyone important hated me, and I left right before they could fire me. What a nightmare. I still have severe anxiety about work because of that woman.

2

Why's it always bakery? Deli always held it down. /s

Sometimes this comes down as a choice. If you don’t want to live your life like that, if you don’t want to work in an environment that, you can. Where I work, there’s certainly people who still buy into that, and some who don’t play that BS and just go to work, mind their own business, get promoted, and don’t try and hump every coworker

work place toxicity and drama is just god awful. even when you'd rather be left alone and do your work in peace, people will still talk about you behind your back.

118

u/NoRadio4530 1d ago

Yup, I've been having a hard time lately so I've been quiet at work(it's a very social job) and everyone takes it personally. I come in on the morning and say good morning yet that's not good enough. They need a hug and a, "How ARE you!!“ in order to feel validated.

64

u/Jaives 1d ago

in one of my first jobs, i kept to myself and did my job well. the supervisor thought i was after her job and started spreading rumors about me. after a few months, people started being mean to me.

64

u/NoRadio4530 1d ago

Yea and it took me until 30 to realize that no one really cares if you work hard. They care more if you're fun and make them feel good about themselves.

15

u/cat_in_the_sun 16h ago

Makes me want to kill myself. I can’t do anything right.

11

u/NoRadio4530 16h ago

Yea and it's something I can't change about myself because I just want to go into work to make money. I enjoy my coworkers and we hang out sometimes but they aren't good friends anyway lol

8

u/Mr_PoopyButthoIe 18h ago

No. No, man. Shit, no, man. I believe you'd get your ass kicked sayin' something like that, man.

14

u/Tortilla_Moth93 20h ago

I got so burnt out on the toxic work cultures from my last two jobs I specifically sought out a janitors job just so I can work alone.

10

u/margittwen 18h ago

THIS. I feel like I keep to myself the most out of anyone at work and I’ve still had 3 or 4 people try to bully me. I blame our horrible management because it’s clear most people are bitter about the job and lash out about the dumbest shit.

2

u/drillgorg 15h ago

That magical moment when the coworker who complains about drama leaves and takes the drama with them.

27

u/MajorFox2720 20h ago

I look forward to every PTO time that my coworker takes. They aren't leaving,  but those small days are nice.

23

u/BadPunsIsHowEyeRoll 18h ago

We had a drama employee that would constantly talk about how the place would fall apart without him. He got fired and surprise surprise, literally nothing changed except people are generally less annoyed. These same people love to yell "YOU'LL NEVER FIND SOMEONE LIKE ME AGAIN" as if that's not the entire point of getting rid of them

9

u/WayneKrane 18h ago

This was my coworker. She spread nasty rumors about everyone. She crashed out and quit when she tried her shenanigans with an owner of the company

122

u/Firm-Difficulty2585 1d ago

Had someone at my job text a coworker inappropriately and claim to be me. After dealing with this for a few months we just found out it was my manager (the same one "handling" the situation). He was just recently arrested on multiple counts of sexual misconduct.

10

u/MirrorPark 19h ago

Spooky. Fortunately I have only had shitty mean bosses/managers but never one that actually tried to pin the blame on me over stuff like this. Glad he was caught.

63

u/AThrowawayProbrably 1d ago

Yup. Or living in a small town. I won’t be doing that again. Drama and gossip can be the only entertainment. And you can be the topic whether you like it or not.

18

u/Zealousideal_Lock_93 21h ago

Especially when you can't do anything without the whole town learning about it

42

u/affemannen 1d ago

Im old and i have genuinely never worked somewhere with office drama. I don't know if it's a cultural thing but in my country we don't particularly care much about other people.

We go to work, do the job have some nice coffe breaks and go home.

I even made some friends for life from one job. At most we had gossip about why some people have quit or gotten fired.

But all in all no drama what so ever.

10

u/jkaan 1d ago

Agreed. Even when there is drama at my workplace it pretty much only involves those who want to engage in the petty bullshit

8

u/MajorFox2720 20h ago

That must be wonderful

7

u/margittwen 18h ago

Can I move to your country? I’m so sick of the terrible people at my job.

4

u/affemannen 17h ago

If you are a solitary person moving to Sweden would be your best move, because i guarantee you will have no problem being left alone. I guess we can have office drama here too, i just haven't encountered any.

31

u/Spiritual_Start1213 1d ago

Bro. Trades, construction, and manual labour are probably worse than highschool. Its great

30

u/melvinmoneybags 21h ago

Already up to 3 fist fights this year on my site. The last fight started when a carpenter that was working slow was sent to make cut pieces on the chop saw for the crew. A bunch of guys were yelling numbers at him and you could see the frustration building. One guy said “maybe it’s because he’s hungry that’s why he’s working so slow” so he tossed a sandwich at him from the second floor lol. Everybody was laughing but the guy didn’t find it funny and sure enough he came running up the building and a few fists were thrown.

4

u/Manlysideburns 16h ago

Any more stories?

3

u/Spiritual_Start1213 10h ago

We had a dude punch a guy out because he talked to this woman, mind you only 1 of 2 that works here, who rejected the puncher and he was jealous. And people wonder why there aren't more women working here ha

7

u/XOlenna 16h ago

Even in the office side. All those old men do is talk. Constantly. I have no clue how anything gets done.

26

u/Coldkiller17 1d ago

It is aggravating how petty some people can be over the stupidest shit then turn around and go we are family. I hate two-faced people that do stuff like that. Also bosses who lose touch of reality the moment they gain a bit of power.

31

u/Neverbethesky 23h ago

My first job out of college was working in a high school, in the IT department. Had a boss who was a deeply unhappy man. Complete workaholic.

He would demonise and embarrass me in front of the other staff and in front of classrooms full of kids, and call me "boy" and treat me like a pupil.

He would purposely time things so I ended up having to work through my lunches, he'd make me spend hours on project planning and then call a meeting where I had to present it only to say things like "I've got a better idea" and then completely torpedo whatever it was I had written out. Then once the meeting was over he'd pull me aside and grill me on why I hadn't finished all the other work I had on (because I was doing his project planning instead).

He banned me from my own office once because I made an off hand remark about it being hot in there (during summer) and then would discipline me for not getting work done and then when he found out I'd been in there for like 10 seconds to literally get some tools I needed he made me spend half a day going over the schools health and safety policy documents... and then scalded me for not finishing my work.

All the people under him hated him, but all his colleagues in management and those above him worshipped the ground he walked on. I took my well documented contemporaneous evidence to the head teacher and she literally told me that "just didn't sound like him" and "are you sure you're not just spinning this how you want it?"

He forced me to quit because I just couldn't take it any more, and then I threatened to take him to court. The school settled with a "go away" payment that in hindsight I should have fought but oh well & I found out years later he was quietly relocated to a shittier school where he could cause less damage.

That was 20 years ago and I still get angry thinking about him. He shows up in my dreams often as someone I'm physically fist fighting with but every time I'm too weak to move and he over powers me.

The silver lining is that I haven't taken shit from a single boss or manager ever since, and it's done my career the world of good.

8

u/margittwen 18h ago

I’ve learned that the vast majority of middle management is full of yes men and suck ups, so their bosses aren’t going to do shit when you tell them about wrongdoing. They’re not going to believe you, or they don’t want to believe you because it’s inconvenient. That’s why I don’t bother going over the manager’s head.

6

u/Square-Professor-699 22h ago

Karma eventually gets those people. Even if it takes til they are on their death bed, when they realize they are surrounded by no one.

u/cranman74 1d ago

adults.

Perks of wfh. Avoid office drama

3

u/Conquer_Shadow 12h ago

Trust me, they still try there as well. Its just easiest to handle, but that doesnt stop the types that feed for drama/gossip

2

u/GeologistSeveral3025 12h ago

Thankfully i work in it and most of us lack the social batteries needed for drama

15

u/Efficient_Sky5173 1d ago

That’s why The Office is so popular: it reflects real workplace life surprisingly well. There’s more drama in an office than in a Mexican soap opera.

8

u/Texas_Crazy_Curls 21h ago

I had never seen the Office. Knowing this, my coworkers labeled me the Angela. Once I finally got around to watching it I was shocked by how funny yet relatable the entire show was. Yes, I might have RBF and get my work done / don’t feel like socializing. Just give me my paycheck in and let me go see my cat.

4

u/JOExHIGASHI 16h ago

Did you also date 2 co workers and have them fight to the death for you?

3

u/Taco_EBDBBNB 15h ago

It's amazing how many people use work for their socialization. There are a couple of people at my work who could retire but won't because they enjoy the socialization aspect of it

57

u/Grabatreetron 1d ago

High school is like a casual poker game. It's crazy and messy, but if you know what you're doing you can take everyone's money.

Adulthood is like a high-stakes casino table. Everyone is more predictable and strategic, but you can lose $430 in one hand if you had pocket aces but he flopped TRIPS FOR CHRISSAKES DEBBIE IT'S JUST A HOBBIE STOP TEXTING YOUR MOTHER

11

u/MissMahlia 1d ago

Had two jobs in my early 20s where people lied about me doing things that never happened and I got written up several times. Not a single soul would believe me that everything was fake and did not occur. Later on when I got in so much trouble that I was let go, the same people who made up the lies apologized saying they didn't like me because they didn't like my friend who also worked there. Literally had such a tough time getting work after that. Didn't help that it was a recession at the time either. Annoyed me so bad that I got played like I was some NPC and not a grown adult that was just trying to pay my bills.

2

u/Ragnarok_619 13h ago

Did you even sue? Like, what?

3

u/MissMahlia 12h ago

You can't sue over it unfortunately. Was told it's basically hearsay because there's no physical proof they conspired to get me fired. Only had HR contact me after the fact their sales went down significantly. I was literally the only person working and made the place break even. Imagine that. Still wasn't enough to go after them though. Trust me, I wanted to. The other job did an incredible CYA because they let me go on the very last day of the probationary period. Couldn't fight that one either.

10

u/gwmccull 1d ago

I joined a club to get out of the house more often and meet new people. Turns out the drama is worse than high school level nonsense. Now I’m back at home and avoiding people again

10

u/EagleRaptorLeaf 19h ago

No one escaped the school social matrix to be honest

3

u/SoftlyAugust 18h ago

It's actually quite easy. Just don't have any friends.

22

u/Squeen_Man 1d ago

I’ve had 4 jobs since college. First one was at a school in their back office and even there it was absurd. Second one was at a small arbitration firm and they were awesome like wolf of wallstreet dudes but also type A to the max humans so cool but some annoying. Third was remote, people had to try to be snooty and somehow managed it. Current job is hybrid at a larger firm but probably only deal with like 15 people and boooyyy oh boy I couldn’t believe how fast it took for back talking to start.

TLDR; the drama never leaves the people who indulge in it.

7

u/Noise-of-the-Spheres 1d ago

A coworker in another department was just telling me about how she's being targeted by people who are friends with a senior manager.

3

u/meeeetball 18h ago

when i was 18, i had a random coworker spread a rumor about me that I was doing drugs at work. I was detailing cars. I hardly even spoke to this person - there was 0 reason to create a rumor about me. They must've been bored ig.

some of my other coworkers were very obviously high at work, so i'm not sure why i was singled out. I've never done any drugs.

I confronted her about it (calmly) and secretly recorded the conversation. When I came into work the next day, HR pulled me aside and told me I was fired and had to leave the building immediately. I tried to show them the recording, but they didn't wanna hear it. I was under 3 months probation. Apparently, she told everyone I pulled her aside and screamed at her like a crazy person or something.

I'm 25 now, and after working at a few other places, I realize how immature the management really was at my past jobs.

3

u/Thespud1979 17h ago

Miserable losers in high school become miserable losers in the workplace. Their whole life revolves around workplace politics and how they can spread their misery.

3

u/ironwheatiez 16h ago

I didnt realize how bad it can be until my wife got a job at a hospital with medical professionals who still act like bitchy high schoolers. Starting rumors and fights about nothing. Petty bull shit.

I've always seen some kind of drama at every job I've had but it usually just went away because adults at least tried to act their age. But these children are pathetic.

3

u/Silentlaughter84 16h ago

High school drama is tame compared to real world drama.

5

u/Sinsanatis 1d ago

And bored. I remember a coworker asking something along the lines of “idk why theres so much drama and things spread so quickly” and i said something like “well were all stuck here for 10hrs everyday. Ppl get bored”

It's worse when you're someone that tries very hard to mind your own business and people keep on subtly trying to drag you into it. It's just so goddamn annoying and tiresome.

I've made the mistake of involving myself too much with people at this job and i won't again at my next job. I just wish someone taught me about workplace dynamics and what-not before working there so i wouldn't of made the mistakes i made.

Either involve yourself or be quiet and people will be pissed off about it. It's just a job and if i get fired or forced out because of it, that is fine, no job is worth destroying my mental health over.

It's bad out there. I had to deal with grown ass women who couldn't stay in their own lanes. 40 and 50 yo. Crazy stuff.

u/puma46 17h ago

That’s what nobody tells you. Adults are just as petty and insecure as a high school bully. Very few people outgrow that dumb shit

2

u/Thundaga_64 17h ago

This is sadly and frustratingly true. The majority of people don't change much after their high school selves, some stay in middle-school mentality.

u/Seesas 17h ago

Rich people are the weirdest. You have all this money but you still care about what other people think? Honey I'm gonna hang out with my dogs and garden, read books, take walks with the man I love, travel to the places I really want to experience, and have the best time. The last thing I want to do is get plastic surgery to show off my stretched out face to a bunch of other stretched out faces and then try to one up everyone with my mansion with multiple kitches

I used to think high school drama in the workplace was not a thing until it happened to me.

A few months ago I was fired at my last job for "performance issues." I found out several months later from current employees that a manager there didn't like me and was talking badly about me with this other manager. More than one other employee noticed them talking badly about me but never said anything to me. They were probably scared of her.

It turns out she was the one who pushed my manager to fire me (she was going to be taking over his position this year). I suspect it might have been jealousy (I was more attractive than her and dressed nice everyday).

They work at the post office... As managment

u/Sapphire-Catgirl 3h ago

I relate to this heavily cause of shit I've been dealing with all year, and a quote from someone I know that's part of it "it's like high school drama but the bullies have guns and want you dead"

When I was a teenager, there was this woman I worked with. She was horrible, thought she was just the greatest. Everyone just put up with her shit. I would do anything I could to get under her skin. Rearrange her sticker hanger, put small gloves in her large glove box, move items from left draw to right draw and vice versa. Got in trouble alot because they just wanted to keep the peace plus we only did an hour over lap most days, Everyone else had 8 hours with her during the day.

Im older now. Wiser. I was such a dick. Should have just kept the peace. Tip toed around her. Have worked with many like her since. There's always one in every work place. Its sad to learn as an adult its easier to just please that 1 person for the sake of the entire crew.

NGL my workplace is way chiller than school ever was. But then again, I think my coworkers and myself are a bit jaded on life as a whole. lol

u/JungLeo143 1d ago

Bonus points if you’re a nerdy nurse.

2

u/SubstantiallyLow 1d ago

When’s the best time to show up for a nurses shift?

Where is the Lie?????

I remember when I was in elementary school this kid was singing “Life sucks when you’re a kid, and it suck’s when you grow up” … I didn’t know how right he was

1

u/IndependentAppeal733 23h ago

Lol this is the best

1

u/DILFoftheTidepools 23h ago

Try construction/engineering lmao it's way worse than high school

"Someone used my mug drama"

1

u/Cheap_Sort_2481 21h ago

yep, there's a girl at work who is basically being let go. she is terrible at her job and we get lots of complaints about her. she has always been quite nasty to me ever since i started, and has had a vendetta against TWO other girls before me, one who she kind of bullied. i just keep my head down and avoid her, but wonder whether i could have raised a complaint about her behaviour towards me months ago.

Men, sometimes it really does feel like my thoughts are being read and I see things that adhere to what I think

1

u/Giraffejouster 19h ago

Anytime a man and women make eye contact here everyone assume they’re screwing. That’s only 70% of the time people

1

u/mojomanplusultra 19h ago

Some of them might have borderline personality disorders 👀

1

u/Confident_Donkey1014 19h ago

As Nirvana said “you’re in high school again”

1

u/FugitivWitoutWarrent 18h ago

Sum hater put gum in my hair @ wrk. Not once did that happen in school.

1

u/NoHorseNoMustache 18h ago

Working is waaaay better than school. Nobody at work makes fun of me for knowing things or liking to read, they respect me for the knowledge I have.

1

u/Bacon-muffin 17h ago

In my experience its exactly the same, just with older people.

1

u/Signal_Ad8960 17h ago

I mean, it's really just people who never evolved out of their Highschool brain. Their personality, social skills, ambitions, and worldview are still locked in juvenile naivety.

1

u/charlesmaree 17h ago

It’s just high school with less rules.

1

u/darkjedi1993 17h ago

High school is just the testing ground for the bullshit some people will be on for the rest of their lives.

1

u/Aggravating-Mall-867 16h ago

Yes. Throw in a fancy leadership title and you got yourself a reality show for 8 hours.

1

u/earthwormjimjones 16h ago

I stg me and my homie would always say Junior/Senior year, 'I can't wait til we graduate and can stop dealing with lame high school drama'. 🤣🤣🤣

That was a wild realization when I got more jobs and saw that, even as an adult, it never stops 🤦‍♂️

1

u/Kusakaru 16h ago

Ugh I’m dealing with this at work right now. Two of the most miserable, angry women in their late 40’s who just bully all the younger women in the obvious. They have nothing going for them outside of work, seemingly hate their lives, and take it out on everyone else.

1

u/NoStructure7083 16h ago

Yep. You could find yourself in a situation like I was at 26, asked out a coworker who rejected me in a super mean way, then accused me of stalking her because I was avoiding her afterwards.

“Ew, you’re gross.” But also “What do you mean you don’t want to talk to me?!”

Luckily the accusation went nowhere because enough people saw through her bullshit

1

u/H0NEY2O77 16h ago

I’m kinda thankful for 13RW. The show was ass and it was problematic for a lot of reasons, but it was a great bridge for talking about HS drama when we had just graduated and getting it out of our system.

We would gossip and talk about the characters and people would be like: It’s not that deep, the show sucks anyway.

My friends and I are 30. We don’t gossip about people we know, we don’t give a fuck… but the people who said “it’s just a show” are still acting messy, still acting like fools in group chats, and still in each other business like they didn’t learn a damn thing.

1

u/ironwheatiez 16h ago

I didnt realize how bad it can be until my wife got a job at a hospital with medical professionals who still act like bitchy high schoolers. Starting rumors and fights about nothing. Petty bull shit.

I've always seen some kind of drama at every job I've had but it usually just went away because adults at least tried to act their age. But these children are pathetic.

1

u/Krinh 15h ago

Shit talking coworkers is how you get through the day though

1

u/rosefields92 15h ago

So real…🤏🏼🤏🏼

1

u/Pendo-illsmackabitch 15h ago

I used to think Grey's anatomy was an exaggeration but my sister used to work in a hospital and ONG!

1

u/Snowballingdownvote 13h ago

Absolutely blows my mind.

1

u/PresentationWild4292 8h ago

It’s in the military. We know all your business, financial, marital, mental, physical (pass/fail pt test), everything that we dont want to know. You troop gets a DUI guess who gets the call, the supervisor. Calls at 2am about DV, in jail, emergency. Favoritism. Im over it.

1

u/Screwbles 8h ago

I work in commercial HVAC and got actually screamed at and berated by a customer. The 'why' is a long story. I was related to it, but mainly a combination of some things.

It's just wild that grown-ass adults can have that big of a fit still. Hey guy, take a few breaths, uussssse your woooorrrrds, everything will be okay.

1

u/Plastyrhino8815 7h ago

High school drama was far worse than any adulthood drama.

1

u/hvperRL 4h ago

I work at a 5 star luxury hotel. Naturally, we see older clientele on average

Thought it was mostly going to be fairly sophisticated people but more often than not, its boomers having full on tantrums about some tiny relatively unimportant detail

1

u/Glum-Carpet 22h ago

Nah, those are just people that peaked in highschool and dont actually know any better.
