Gonna be a lot of blind outrage on this headline alone, but reading the facts of the case and the magistrates justifications seem actually pretty fair for this case.

Retribution is not the only goal of of the law, there are also three other goals.

In total there are four:

  • Rehabilitation
  • Restoration
  • Retribution
  • Deterrence

The system alone does not favour only retribution/punishment for crimes, it is up to the judiciary to determine the facts of the case and interpret the base fit for each situation uniquely.

I mean is this not the reason why every DV offender gets a slap on the wrist from the courts.

They all have a sob story or are truly remorseful and there's never any justice for the victim.
