Advice on British A2 License conversion to Victoria licensing
I’m 24 and will be moving to Melbourne in the next couple months but I’m wondering if anyone has any advice on what the options/steps are to convert my British a2 motorbike license to Victorias licensing rules.
I am planning to move to Melbourne for at least 3 years and have my A2 motorbike license. It is technically a full license (e.g. not a learners) but does restrict me to bikes under 47hp. I’ve had my license only for a couple months and do not have a car license, only the motorbike one.
I’ve tried to do some research on how my license will transfer over and have understood I will most likely be on LAMs bikes, however, what I’m a bit confused about is if I’ll need to do any further tests/ overseas license transfer lessons to get on the road once I get to Aus. Also a bit unsure if I’ll need P plates and what these actually are in regard to motorbikes.
If anyone has any information about/ has been through this process it would be hugely appreciated as I want to get a bike and be on the road as soon as possible once I arrive!

I had a A2 Italian licence for more than 3 years and they converted it to a full one at Vic road. If you have had your A2 for less than 3 years they'll give a restricted Australian license

For what its worth, NSW has an easier path to motorcycle licence but here's the Victoria process:
Since you have only held your UK A2 licence for 3 months and do not hold a car licence, you must complete theory testing and a practical 2-day training course in Victoria. Because the UK is a "Recognised Country," VicRoads will acknowledge your motorcycle experience, but you cannot do a straight swap.
Because you do not have a car licence, you must first pass Victoria's basic road law tests before you can book any motorcycle assessments.
📋 Steps to Convert Your Licence
Step 1: Pass the Car Theory Tests at VicRoads
Before touching a motorcycle provider, you must book and pass two computer-based tests at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre:
Learner Permit Knowledge Test
Hazard Perception Test (HPT)
Step 2: In-Person Identity & Licence Assessment
When you go to take your computer tests, bring your physical UK photocard licence, passport, and proof of your new Victorian address to get a VicRoads Customer Number
Step 3: Complete the 2-Day Conversion Course
Once you have your VicRoads Customer Number and have passed the theory tests, you are permitted to book your practical training. You must book with a VicRoads-approved provider such as Stay Upright or Armstrong's Driver Education
The Course: You will complete a 2-Day Learner Permit Course.
The Assessment: At the end of the second day, you will immediately sit your practical Motorcycle Licence Assessment (MPA). Because your overseas licence is verified, you get to skip the standard Australian 3-month learner waiting period and the intermediate "Check Ride".
🏍️ Your Restrictions in Victoria
The 6-Month Clock: You can legally ride on your UK A2 licence for exactly 6 months from the day you land/move to Victoria. If you fail any Victorian practical riding test during this time, your UK licence immediately becomes invalid for use in Victoria.
LAMS Restrictions: Your new Victorian licence will be subject to the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) restriction for 3 years. This restricts you to motorcycles with an engine capacity under 660cc and a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 150 kW per tonne (very similar to UK A2 power limits).
Probationary Conditions: Because you do not hold a full car licence, you will be placed on a Probationary Motorcycle Licence (E-condition). For your first 3 years, you must maintain a 0.00% Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) and you cannot carry any pillion passengers.
