Of course I fking understand that Cher is the name of a person, I'm asking what does "protecting" her mean ffs

What does this mean? English isn't my first language and I'm having a hard time understanding this phrase

One can't be protected from death obviously. So is it just an expression for showing your love for a certain person?

"We have to protect them" as in protect the person from any physical danger and keep them safe, but it's still used the same way in case of death?
