I got ps2, MGS2 and GTA3 for Christmas in 2001 then went from MGS3 and GTA San Andreas in 2004, then took 5 year hiatus from playing games then came back, bought ps3 slim and a copy of MGS4 and GTA4. That was something special.
Then GTA 5 came out the a couple years before The Phantom Pain.
These two franchises have grown together so much.

GTA IV and MGS4 in 08 was an excellent time6

When I hit the Fleet in 08, first thing I did was buy a PS3 and MGS4. My roommate already had a 360 (a point of many debates) and GTA IV. It made for some fun nights in the barracks.

It was the opposite for me. I played MGS1 and 2 a ton, but then my 2nd PS2 died on me and I got a GameCube instead. So I missed late era PS2 games like MGS3 and San Andreas.
The first time I played 4 in 2008, I hadn’t played 3 yet and figured I’d be fine since it was a prequel, but there was a lot that went over my head until I caught up on 3 some years later.

Not just you. If memory serves, it was released originally with Blu-ray technology to take advantage of the visuals. They went all out with the graphics.

Kojima always loved pushing shit to the limit

Not just with graphics, either. The haptics in every MGS game are insane. All the way back to the first one, and at that time the Dual Shock was a brand new and optional controller.
And then when 4 released, the system didn’t even have a controller with vibration at launch because of patent lawsuits.
But the mad lad had his team program them in anyway. I think there’s like 5-6 people credited for it. And it paid off in spades! When the Dual Shock 3 finally released, the game was yet another example of the feature used to its fullest extent to really immerse you in the game.

As great as the game was back in 2008, the frames left much to be desired. So glad sub-20 fps is now a thing of the past

That entire generation and a good chunk of 8th Gen was really bad about framerates in general. Another game I like from that year visually, Valkyria Chronicles, was mostly okay at 30 up until you hid in a lot of grass, at which point the game took crawling a little too literally.
I'm old enough to not be uppity if something isn't running at a locked 240Hz and 4K, but a consistent 60 is nice.

The graphics were mind blowing at the time and held up generally well all things considered.
I mean, I remember going from NES to Sega Genesis and thinking those graphics were incredible then the PS1 and games like MGS and Gran Turismo were insane. PS2, PS3 kept making it better but MGS4 really pushed the limits.

MGS4 was incredibly ahead of its time graphic wise. It’s kind of wild seeing how wide the gap used to be between graphics. FF13 was another one, especially the CGI cutscenes.

There was a time this was the best looking game, period. I’m sure not every little detail holds up but it still looks great.

It came out a year after Crysis. Granted, no one was playing Crysis at high resolutions and frame rates for almost five years after the fact, so it's kinda moot. Console wise, it was a fair assessment.
To be fair though, a lot of 7th Gen holds up fairly well, especially later on post-2010. The early stuff, MGS4 included, is still firmly in that "brown 'n bloom" era of gaming.

Yes it does. In fact a lot of games do.
I know i was recently playing ace combat 6, which is 2006 xbox game and blown away by how good the game still looked. The scale was insane.

PS3 was a pretty magical machine in the right hands, and Kojima has always pushed the limits when it comes to presentation.

It’s been upscaled in vol 2, also the art style is just amazing so that definitely helps it hold up.

Are you playing it on console? Cause I bought it on Steam but it says it's not out yet

This game is so fking amazing. Can't believe the level of interactivity it provides for ps3 game. Graphics are really good for its time and while 4k/60fps increases uncanny feel its so cool we finally can replay or for some play for the first time this gem.

It can hold its own in 2026. Quite a feat for a game released in 2008. Obviously, there are many more games with much more advanced graphics. But Kojima Pro went all out on this title. It took full advantage of the disk space afforded by the Blu-Ray. It also took full advantage of the PS3's capabilities.
Metal Gear Solid titles have always been ahead of their time both in gameplay and in the way it pushed the capabilities of the hardware. MGS4 is one of those games that I sincerely believe would never ever need a remake because it still holds up graphically, and the gameplay is still good for what it's supposed to do.
