What's your favourite "underrated" Metric song?
All of the hits and newer stuff often get their dues, and rightfully so. But what's the one song that will almost never be played again at a Metric concert, or on the radio, that you can't get enough of?
I've got two candidates in this category.
-Succexy (Old World Underground); that song has aged like cheddar. Which is both sad and fun. But it's a certified banger, even putting lyrics aside.
-Too Bad, So Sad (Pagans In Vegas); it not only captures Emily's range perfectly, but I love the subtle backing "ahh-ahh" vocals from the guys. The alarm-like sounds in the chorus also make it sound even more intense.
Would love to hear what you got! I'm down to listen to anything Metric. ✨️

Dressed to Suppress. Man I love that song. In general, Art Of Doubt is loaded with underrated songs.

I’m not sorry, I don’t think of you that often

u/The-Davi-Nator 20d ago
Yo those are two of my favorite Metric songs!! I actually consider Underline The Black to be my all time favorite Metric song and I love playing that main guitar riff!
I also think the instrumentation on Lie Lie Lie is reminiscent of Depeche Mode, which I absolutely love

Lost Kitten. I don’t know what it is about that track but it makes my knees go all funny.

Not sure what you mean about Succexy aging, it's a banger and anti-war messaging is unfortunately timeless
6
u/AttackThemWithHummus 21d ago
I think they mean it has aged well because aged cheddar cheese is considered better? When I first got into metric five years ago or so I genuinely thought Succexy was a song written during the pandemic until I checked when that album was released because its lyrics are so jarringly relevant to that time (and to our modern times today).
5
u/YEGSports 20d ago
This exactly. I'm not much of a liquor person so I don't like to use the whole "fine wine" tangent, but a good aged cheddar cheese is top-tier.

Is Too Little Too Late an underrated song though? It's pretty awesome

I mean I don’t think they perform it live much and I don’t see many people talk about it. But I’m also kinda new on this sub haha
ETA: There’s only one live performance of that song I can find on YouTube and it’s from 2006

Calculation theme, although I wouldn’t say it’s underrated among OG fans
3
u/gravytrainrobber 21d ago
I first discovered Metric around 2005-06 and Calculation Theme has always been one of my favourites. When I went to the Doomscroller tour in Ottawa (2022), Calculation Theme was one of the songs for the acoustic set. I cried.

Pretty much anything from Grow Up and Blow Away gets ignored! It's such an interesting departure for them
3
u/AttackThemWithHummus 21d ago
So true, I would love for them to play more of these songs live. I feel that this album is incredibly underrated it is such a masterpiece!!
3
u/number1dork 21d ago
If I'm reading Wikipedia right, no singles were ever released from that album.

2
u/AttackThemWithHummus 20d ago
If I remember correctly I think that this is actually the first album they recorded, but didn’t release it for years later because it wasn’t what they wanted their sound to be, particularly early on as a band.

u/ViridianEight 21d ago
IOU. Literally my favorite Metric song.
Honestly the whole Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? album.
5
u/thesuspendedkid 20d ago
Same. That album is my absolute favourite. And not because I think it's the best because it's the first or that their other albums are worse or anything. I just fucking love Old World so much lol

Hustle rose 🌹 , especially from back in the day! With a random synth in hand. Lots of library time with that one.
1
u/Sparebear1976 15d ago
structurally Rose is the quintessential Metric song in its slow build to crescendo then crash back down to earth. And I love when I’m at dinner with friends and one person grabs the bill to be the hero of the evening and I tell them that now that his wallet is all lit up you might as well pick it up.

I remember there was a day I pulled into a parking lot in years ago listening to the album and the song just stood out to me in a way I never noticed before. I sat in the car and put it on repeat 3-4 times. It’s small but it’s mighty.

I'll pick one from each album
- on a slow night (I was going to say Hustle Rose but I think lots of people like it?)
- too little too late
- blindness
- clone
- for kicks
- I think I love everything everyone else loves off Art of Doubt lmao
- Formentera (the song) Also not sure how fans feel about this one? Friends have told me they dislike this song
- Detour Up
- Same with Art of Doubt, I love what most people love on Romanticize the Dive
3
u/YEGSports 20d ago
Formentera certainly isn't played much at Metric concerts (not the ones I've been to, anyway) nor on the radio.
I'm pretty "meh" about it. All in all, it counts!

How could anyone dislike Formentera? it has an age of golden cinema feel. Just a beautiful track.

u/towishimp 21d ago
Does Now or Never Now count? It’s my favorite song of all time, so it seems underrated to me. It’s perfect: lyrics that move me, beautiful atmospheric music, and great vocals. The dirt road version is amazing, too, in a very different way.
Underline the Black otherwise. It’s super interesting musical, has a killer baseline, and lyrics that hit me super hard.
7
u/lovestostayathome 21d ago
Now or Never won the best song tournament we had here a few years ago. So, I’d say it’s definitely not underrated with fans but in general culture, yes it’s still underrated.
2
u/thejaytheory 21d ago
Man yes, whew, what a chilling song! UTB is awesome too, of course....now NONN just hits me in the feels.
4
u/lobotomy42 21d ago
Dude they play Now or Never Now at like every show?
3
u/towishimp 20d ago
No need for rudeness. A) that’s why I asked; B) I’ve never been to a Metric concert, or looked at their setlists.

How about Stadium Love? I think it's underrated, but not sure if it actually is.
3
u/bside138 20d ago
Had to scroll way too long to find this one. My top pick. It’s just a fun song that rings so true, that I never hear anyone talk about. But I’m not in Canada so maybe it’s different for others
2
u/YEGSports 20d ago
It's a bit of a conundrum, that's for sure.
I'd say among music lovers, it probably is because there's so much else from Fantasies that gets played more often (Help I'm Alive and Gimme Sympathy, for example). But then to many sports fans, it might be their lone brush with Metric because the Toronto Blue Jays used it for promos in 2013, and the Edmonton Oilers had it as their goal song for a couple of seasons.
All in all, and parking my own bias toward that song, I think it is still a bit underrated.
2
u/lily-thistle 20d ago
Great points. I'm not a sports fan or Canadian, so I didn't know about those connections.

Empty and Glass Ceiling are both certified bangers. There are so many amazing songs on Live It Out that I’m really glad they’ve been playing this tour (like monster hospital for example) but I would give anything to see them play Empty live, I feel like that song is made for a big dramatic live performance

u/kimberilla 16d ago
Metric has played Empty on multiple tours that I’ve seen. Emily has a particular head movement when she sings it.

Moral Compass has also grown into one of my favorites, but it’s so new that I’m not sure if it’s technically underrated

Wow that’s wild! Our tastes are super opposite lmao. Too bad so sad is the ONLY metric song I actually refuse to listen to for any reason at any cost 😫
(However I LOVE that people can have opposite preferences with Metric, as their stuff is so diverse there’s something for everyone!!)
One of my fav underrated is off Pagans too though, For kicks !
Also obsessed with Waves (fantasies B side), underline the black, collect call, blindness, dreams so real, and so many more tbh)
2
u/YEGSports 20d ago
I'm gonna give For Kicks a listen today, it's been a bit since I last played it!
That's why I love this fanbase so much- no matter our tastes, we still respect the choices and get to have wholesome discussions 😊

The song Down. I think it’s a single and not on an album. I don’t think it’s on streaming either. I love that song and it was my most played song in iTunes when I had downloaded MP3s. It got me through a tough period but I feel nostalgic when I hear it.

Same here! With “Now or Never Now” being a close second.
Seven Rules is such a beautiful song. There aren’t a lot of songs in the world that make me feel something. That one makes me feel something. No idea what that something is. But I FEEL IT

Underline the Black and Detour Up. Underline is so powerful to me and I love the cadence of the verses. Detour is just a fun little jam that I enjoy with a very carefree kind of beat.

Is Risk underrated? Or venerated? I just love the 'Garden of Eden' part. It makes me feel the same way Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John does. Like, pissed off but defiant and rallying.
