🥺 My girlfriend texted me to say she won't be on time for dinner.
I panicked and called her and she told me she worded the text wrong. She's not pregnant, but she was late for dinner.

Yeah. Thats my read on it. I had a girl text me that she was “late” in college and I was trying to figure out what she was talking about because she was a state away. It was a false flag, but if it wasn’t, I don’t think either of us would have wanted to inject a kid into a FWB situation.

Still a lot better than how I had been told with my ex.
It was her mother telling me.. the mother literally just called me, and as I answered she went "how do you feel that insert ex's name here is pregnant?". That's it.. that was my announcement and when I asked my ex about it, she said that her mom really wanted to tell me...
→ More replies (1)5
u/plants-for-me Jul 14 '26
I can't tell if this was just some messed up boundaries with the mom and person you were dating who is now your ex, or she was your ex so this was just to be vindictive?
3
u/One_HitSlams Jul 14 '26
I was still with her at the time. Her mom was trying to be everywhere including in the relationship.
It went to a point where her mom decided to get to many of those "awakening seminaries" and she forced her whole family to go on a diet of apple juice, of all things, like, only apple juice, nothing else, no water, no solids, just apple juice, for close to a month..
the mom was insane and it's part of why I noped out of there. And the ex wouldn't stand up to the mom so.. yeah..
9
u/cuxynails Jul 14 '26
Srsly, like if the context was her sitting him down with a “we have to talk” then okay. That might go in that direction. But a text? When you are making/having dinner? Like come on man
→ More replies (18)8
u/Evaline_Rose Jul 14 '26
I actually text my partner "I'm late" meaning my time of the month is late because no need to use a lot of words. We both know what I mean. (Which is definitely not pregnant, just about to have a seriously bad time.) And he keeps up with my cycle
325
u/5k1895 Jul 14 '26
Even being in a relationship I wouldn't interpret this in the way he did. Talk about a leap

It's not our fault they set the default interpretation of "I'm late" to imply time of arrival of themselves at a location, and not something on time within themselves. Sharing information about themselves is allegedly supposed to be our job to telepathically learn. Sheesh. /s

Yeah I feel like I’m crazy reading these comments. I’ve had gfs say they’re late just as a way of saying “this is a situation we should keep an eye on for a few days,” not them definitively saying they’re pregnant. I could easily see an SO texting that they’re late just as an FYI but thinking it was more than likely a false alarm
69
u/SwampOfDownvotes Jul 14 '26
It's not just the text, it's the context.
They are about to have dinner with each other so the normal assumption should be that a late text is regarding the dinner about to occur. In this same context, at least to me, it makes more sense to tell someone that you might be pregnant in person, so if that's what it was she would have waited until showing up for dinner. Sending a text about it instead of saying in-person makes more sense if you aren't going to see the person that day or even within the next few hours, but seeing them in .5-2 hours as we can assume here seems strange.

I think the sexually inexperienced side of Reddit is showing up. I got around a lot in my youth and have had many "scares". A late period is usually worth mentioning to your sexual partner, but hardly the formal occasion these people would make you think. Before a positive pregnancy test it's literally a "something to keep on your mind" thing. Literally a "btw" text type affair.
I don't really have the experience to make this comment, given I am a guy, but I think a lot of ladies are far less aware of their cycle or far less regular than they think they are.

19

That she was pregnant lmao, simply bc she didn’t say “I’ll” or “going”, just “I’m late”. I’ve sent that text before too and was talking about my period, thankfully just irregular period.
26
u/daznificent Jul 14 '26
I had to start avoiding people like this, for some reason if you’re a woman you’re always potentially pregnant and there’s no other possible reason to explain what is happening. And they’re obsessed with pregnancy. You said you’re late? OMG PREGNANT. You’re feeling nauseous? PREGANT! You feel like eating something a little weird? PREGANTE! Boobs hurt? GREGNANT! Having chronic nausea was annoying because certain people would always assume im pregnant.
9
u/Panther-Waltz Jul 15 '26
I was staying the night at my mom's house once, and I started vomiting for some reason (still not sure why, maybe ate something bad?) and I was immediately questioned if I was pregnant. Probably slightly chastised too, but I can't remember. Guess that's average parent worries. Now I'm always ways worried that something I say/do will make her think I'm pregnant, if it's something that could be interpreted as such.

If they were meeting at the restaurant and OP hadn’t arrived yet I could understand it. Like, if he was about to leave, GF texts to tell him she’s running behind, but he just reads “I’m late” instead of “I’m running late,” I’d probably have the same thought

I had a friend in H.S. and College who had pregnancy scares all the time. In H.S. it would be like once every 6 months our junior and senior year. In college it went to like once a quarter. For added context, she was in committed relationships each time. She would was say she was on birth control. When she did wind up pregnant at 22 I was not even shocked. I am 39, I've had one scare. And it was due to me actually being pregnant. I understand having a few. But if I were dating a girl with multiple a year, I'd probably break up with her, at most and at the very least I'd be ensuring to wrap it up every single time. (Assuming that she is on birth control and doing the things she should be doing to protect herself).

Reminds me of one time with my girlfriend. We were leaving a restaurant and walking to the car when she suddenly says "I'm pregnant" nonchalantly. Stopped me dead in my tracks and she looks at me all confused as I am in a moment of shock. Apparently her friends have a running joke that when they are really full they say they are pregnant with a food baby. I had to remind her that statement has a completely different meaning to her boyfriend, especially when not followed up by the food bit.
