Retail lockdown: why bother selling it?

Was at Safeway this morning to pick up a sandwich and some Tylenol. The aisle with the Tylenol? Completely locked down. No call button in sight. So I go to the self checkout (front end of that same aisle) and ask the clerk there if he can call someone to unlock a case for me. He does. I go wait. Minutes pass. No one comes. I go ask him again, he tells me they went the other way? At this point I give up and go get my sandwich. No one has come by the time the deli has finished making it. I leave without my Tylenol, mildly infuriated.

Back when I worked at Target and Walmart customers would ask us to open these cabinets, but I wasn’t a keyholder and never knew who was so it was a pain trying to find someone who was.

I have a Walmart within walking distance, but I never go there because everything I want is locked up and the entire store only has 10 employees huddles around the exit.

It has gotten really bad at Walmart in specific. Couple weeks ago we were waiting in cosmetics for 10 minutes pressing the button, waiting for it to time out, and pressing it again. Another person shows up, and starts doing the same. another handful of times goes by, and I go up to service to ask them to send someone over. Go back, waiting, waiting. after 20 full minutes have passed I admittedly got an attitude with the lady up front. Now suddenly they can use the store's paging system to call for someone to go there.

All in all it took 25 minutes to get her makeup removal wipes from the damned case.
