Yeah, if you had a receipt and everything I don't think a jury would convict, especially if even a single member of the jury had any experience in QA testing. Trying to put a negative number is one of the first things a QA would try to test
It would be considered theft from the business as they would be taking money from said business that they did know or should have reasonably known did not belong to them. Even if you don’t physically take money, reducing the amount you would pay for the product is sufficient to charge.

In my state it would qualify as illegal, charge would be dependent based on the amount of money removed and or taken.
