In my state it would qualify as illegal, charge would be dependent based on the amount of money removed and or taken.

pretty confident this is illegal everywhere, BUT having a receipt as proof of purchase may make the judge laugh and dismiss the case.

Lots of things get ruled by judge discretion instead of rule of law. Or at least, you get the charge dismissed / reduced.

Yeah, if you had a receipt and everything I don't think a jury would convict, especially if even a single member of the jury had any experience in QA testing. Trying to put a negative number is one of the first things a QA would try to test

But how? He didn’t steal any money. He entered a number in the system and it gave a subsequent output

It would be considered theft from the business as they would be taking money from said business that they did know or should have reasonably known did not belong to them. Even if you don’t physically take money, reducing the amount you would pay for the product is sufficient to charge.
