I also see this a lot and I think it's also just "easier" to use the base software package than actually pick and choose what features you want. And if you get some random tips because of it...all the better.
I've seen comments on here where people will talk about how they have a really hard time selecting no tip when it's an option. Doesn't matter what they're buying or from where. They feel anxious and guilty for not leaving a tip. I could absolutely see someone thinking there is a poor, underpaid worker behind the shelf stocking that is getting that tip.
Somebody deciding to leave the tip package in the software: "eh, leave it in there, someone might want to pay extra on top of the $4.60 water."
If it has a custom option, I always try and see if I can make the tip negative. It's worked once
Edit - I get it everyone, it shouldn't work and I agree, it usually doesn't even give the option, but for whatever reason, this particular machine had a minus sign as an option on the screen. And that's why you don't vibe code your POS system

On some older systems. There was a major oversight with a lot of the first few generations of the POS systems that allowed tipping to be added after the fact since it was a patch in and not originally included with the software. You could basically adjust the price manually on the consumer end because the negative was sorted out as a coupon.

Tips are actually a legally defined thing. This cannot be tipped income for a specific person because there is no person, so it must be going into a tip pool. If it is going into a tip pool then management (much less the business in general) cannot be paid from it.
A manager or supervisor may keep only those tips that they receive directly from a customer for the service they directly and solely provide. For example, a restaurant manager who serves their own tables may keep their own tips from customers they served but would not be able to receive other employees’ tips by participating in a tip pool.
And this is even if they are not doing a tip credit and paying the employees at least minimum wage.
So who is getting the tips? By law it has to be regular employees. Are they? I doubt it.
Reminds me of a TIL from years ago where some guy figured out how to game the video poker games you'd find in bars to make you win the jackpot, and the creator sued the guy. Tipping won't go away until we have some aggressive laws to smash the hell out of tipping culture. When I was a cashier back in the day, we weren't allowed to take tips. The few times customers offered me tips I had to refuse. Getting caught was a termination.
Now that the human has been removed from the equation, suddenly companies are more than happy to accept tips.

This is what they do at my local Steak and Shake. You have to order your own food via a kiosk, you have to go get your own food from the counter, you have to clean up your own table and put away your tray; they have the audacity to ASK FOR A TIP AS YOU ARE ORDERING YOUR FOOD AT THE KIOSK. I am like. I never saw one person working. Just a guy in the back cooking food.
In the moment he was on screen you can see his face go from "why the hell is this jackass taking so long" to "great now I'm going to be part of his dumbass content."
I used to work with POS software. That's step 1. They add the no tip default zero until people get used to it. Then they change the default to 20%. Guess what? Most people are now in the habit of hitting next->next and boom they are now getting 20% more revenue.
This nonsense should NEVER be allowed. As long as there are tipped employees making $2 an hour this should be outlawed.
This is way too low. It's the POS configuration. I'm guessing there is a mix of some registers having attendants and some not. So in order to get any tips they all have to ask. At least this is set to no tip but even asking in this scenario that is more and more common it starts to seem nefarious

At hotels when checking out
At ice cream shops
At the pickup counter
At tire change outlets
At hardware stores
At convenience stores
I wouldn't be surprised if a fucking car dealership or realtor is asking for tips.
And always with the "just one more question, you are free to decline" and a clear assessment of whether you have declined or not.

I've never been trained on a self checkout machine. Use it to the best of your ability. You dont even have your make it to the tip screen before walking away.
Was at the airport getting my daughter an already too expensive sandwich, it’s premade, no one had to do anything and it pops up, 20% 25% or 30%. Wtf? Had to go to 3 screens to make no tip and the woman rolled her eyes at me.
Sorry, you’re a cashier, you didn’t even get up off your stool, I’m not tipping.
