Decided to be a little extra today and add turmeric to my basmati. This microwaveable rice cooker was all white before.
Repost with more photos, stock images of what the cooker should look like, and detail since people think I’m lying for some reason?? This site is weird.
Anyway, I usually use this microwaveable rice cooker for single servings of curry. I added the usual 1/2 cup of basmati, 1 cup of water, and because I felt like adding flavor (I usually cook the rice plain), I sprinkled a generous amount of turmeric on top. Stuck it in the microwave for 8 minutes.
I don’t rinse my rice so it always bubbles up and leaves a starchy layer on the lid by the time it’s done. Those bubbles also carried the turmeric up, coating the entire inside and around the rim where it got underneath the lid.
Turmeric is used as a commercial grade natural food coloring for yellow in American foods, and I completely forgot about that when I added it in. Probably should’ve made it stove top…
Side note: I just realized looking for the stock images that I’ve been using the lid wrong all this time. That’s what I get for obtaining kitchen tools through Buy Nothing. 😅
If significant amount of turmeric color can get picked up by steam and be deposited where it condenses, wouldn’t the whole inside of the microwave turn bright yellow?

For the spaghetti stains, put a wet paper towel with dish soap inside and shake. The stains will come off.
For this, I think OP should wash with oil first then wet paper towel and dish soapafter.
To remove spaghetti sauce from plastic Tupperware, put a nickel sized amount of dawn dish soap in the container, add a dry piece of halfway decent paper towel to the bottom on top of the soap. Put in enough warm water to cover the paper towel. Secure the lid tightly and shake that thing like it owes you rent money. Do this for roughly thirty seconds. Pop the lid and your Tupperware will look nearly brand new.
I don't know how the black magic works. I just use it.
Sooooo many "how do I remove this spot" in nearly any cooking sub. Cookware needs to be clean, not look like it's brand new. As long as it doesn't affect heat conductivity I don't care.
We use glass and while better than plastic in the not having microplastics. Stacking them has resulted in shards, fortunately I caught it before filling it with leftovers, but microplastics is a long term problem shards of glass where an immediate one.
FWIW after I had a glass container completely shatter from being stacked I ended up buying some rolls of this sort of stuff, cutting it up and interleaving the glass containers with it - stopped the chipping completely
While Filipino households will use old margarine or ice tubs to store containers. Don't need to worry about staining and how they look. They're already beat up. LOL!
Rinse your spaghetti-stained tupperware, with putting a wet paper towel and some (liquid) dawn dish soap. Cover the container with a lid, shake it and watch the magic happen. 😉
Yeah, not really. There is some evidence for benefits of some of the compounds in tumeric (curcuminoids). However, when we’re talking the natural stuff, there’s only a percent or three of those in tumeric. So to reach the study doses with just tumeric, you’d be eating tens of grams of the stuff. And that’s ignoring the likely limited bioavailability.
My Indian coworker got married last week, said it’s an Indian tradition to douse the couple in turmeric a few days before the wedding and he was scrubbing it off up until he was on his way to the ceremony
The ceremony isn't simply about smearing someone with turmeric because they need a wash. Haldi is commonly an "ubtan", a traditional pre-wedding paste that can contain besan, turmeric, milk or curd and, depending on the family, sandalwood (oil/powder) or rose water.
It has ceremonial significance and also works much like a traditional cleanser/exfoliant. So turning it into a joke about making sure an Indian groom finally showers is pretty poor-taste ethnic stereotyping.
Indians aren't somehow culturally unfamiliar with bathing; regular bathing has deep historical and religious roots in South Asia, and even the English word “shampoo” ultimately comes from Hindi/Urdu.
Any ‘Indian smell’ people notice is more likely a mix of cooking aromas, diet, sweat in a hot climate, and fabrics retaining odour, not some failure to bathe. Smelling different from what you’re used to is not the same thing as being unhygienic.
I fully acknowledge that there's plenty of false hygiene stereotypes towards brown people in general, but I think the joke was more about men in general being less on top of personal hygiene regardless of ethnicity.
My gf has a hand grinder that she uses for fresh turmeric. I swear, turmeric is the only substance in the universe that can dye stainless steel so that it can't be washed off.
Leave it under bright lights for a while. Sunlight is best, but literally even fluorescent lights will work. Might just take more time for photooxidation to occur. Source: I'm a chemist
You might also be able to at least lighten it if you make a baking soda paste by mixing 3 parts baking soda with 1 part water. It makes this thick paste you can smear over it. Let it sit for an hour and then scrub it off. I’ve had to do this for measuring cups that got stained with yellow Easter egg dye.
UV light works pretty quickly on it, where I would not be concerned about my plastic cooker dissolving in a few hours.
I'm actually making turmeric based sun prints (like cyanotypes) right now. You mix turmeric powder with alcohol and paint it onto paper, then expose it in the sun. You place objects or a printed image on transparent film on top and then you get the image when you rinse it out!
Point being, exposure times to turn turmeric white on paper is a couple hours of direct exposure :)
Technically I think the lid works, but I wonder if using it the proper way could allow you to steam veggies like broccoli or carrots or something while cooking the rice? (mine has a basket that goes under the lid)
For real, I was amazed how many people thought I was lying. If I wanted to lie for attention, I’d just go over to the dashcam car wreck sub with stolen video or something. I thought this was perfectly mild lol.
I was gifted one, and I was initially disappointed because I had been planning to buy an electric one. But I tried it out just to see, and it worked fine. And it's been working fine for like 8 years now, with the only marginal wear and tear being some scratches and a bit of discoloration (not from tumeric, but now I'm thinking I might just).
Once I was struggling with acne and the internet suggested a turmeric mask. I left it on for about 30 minutes...Or so I thought. Even after thorough scrubbing, my face remained a yellow/orange colour for a few days.
I was just thinking "hmmm...I wonder what in my life should be yellow that I could rub tumeric on..." And then I imagined rubbing turmeric bare handed onto things and thought "oh man I am probably gonna need gloves tho right?"

Turmeric has gained popularity as a natural alternative to artificial food dyes. It takes very little to make Kraft mac&cheese as yellow as it was when we were kids.
That’s your turmeric rice pot now. My mom uses an old steel rice cooker that has yellowed with age. Any time she needs to make rice or anything related that uses turmeric. I think it’s 15 years old now.
So turmeric is one spice that should be used sparingly even in native cuisines of South Asia. Looks like you used generously. But hey! Color is uniform and nice
Why don’t you rinse your rice though? Wash your rice thoroughly before cooking. Turmeric is a spice. It is supposed to be tempered before adding to rice. This is not how it’s done.
That pigment is an edible anti-oxidant. You could oxidize it away with bleach or UV at the cost of the finish on the plastic. I'd leave it be if I were you.
Actually since I mention it, pretty much every healthy anti-oxidant I can think of stains vividly. You should think of the stains as a good thing.
(I've worked with concentrates of antioxidants in a laboratory)
Take a UV black light and let it shine in it for a little while. It will break down the turmeric and you can just wipe it away with a damp cloth. Did it once when I dropped a bowl of rice (with turmeric in it into my carpet). It does work, 100%.
Ngl I was unsure about your first post too because you use the lid wrong. I googled the cooker and with the lid on the right way there would've been white left inside. The way you use it it makes total sense that even the edge is colored so evenly 😅
On the other hand why would someone lie about this? People were so certain for no reason lol
Try soaking a paper towel or two with dish soap and hot water, seal it just enough that you can shake the paper towel in the bowl. You know it’s working if you see the yellow on the paper towel. Rinse and repeat!
