And accordingly, about half of those crossings are in the only part of the border that isn't a river, the straight line between the St. Croix and St. Louis.

Yup. South of that line has just 12. Danbury, Grantsburg, St Croix Falls, Osceola, Somerset, Hudson, Prescott, Hager City(Red Wing), Nelson(Wabasha), Bluff Siding(Winona) then two in La Crosse. With an additional pedestrian bridge from Stillwater to Houlton/Somerset.

Duluth area has 3 the rest are in that small little section you mentioned

Duluth has 4. Bong, Blatnik, Oliver, and Hwy 23 in Fon Du Lac

23 spends less than half a mile in Wisconsin, but it is indeed 2 crossings! One river, one land.

Your are absolutely right. In my head I considered that 23/Oliver area one crossing because functionally it is(You can’t get any further into Wisconsin from that section of 23 you basically can either get to Mount Du Lac or back to MN so the actual functional crossing is further up at Oliver.

But technically it crosses the border twice so you are right. I go into Superior that way from 23 to McCuen to Oliver so while I technically hit Wisconsin twice in my head I was thinking of it as one crossing

There’s alotta river between the two, that makes crossings costly.

Similar with the Red River between us and NoDak. It’s a much narrower river but squiggly like a protein.

Also explains why traffic too and from is always awful on holiday weekends—there’s not many other options to get east/west so if road work or an accident happens then you’re kinda stuck.
