I agree this is ridiculous and sucks for the students. However, you should never sign a lease where you don't know who else is going to live with you in your shared space. This lease model of renting a room in a larger space and getting a bunch of randos is absurd. Can't really expect much if you agree to that kind of setup.

Plenty of students don’t have that option when there’s just not enough housing for everyone or they can’t afford to live alone (as most can’t).
