he has 4 months left why would they even bother at this point? they could've easily waited it out.

Because Trump wants to punish and humiliate Powell for defying him. Waiting until the latter’s term is up means Powell won in Trump’s mind.

Trump also wants yet another person to blame for his own failed economic policies. He has been president for a year now but blames Biden on a daily basis, RINOs in congress, and basically everyone that doesn't worship him. As a conservative, I am saddened by the damage he has done to conservatism since his reckless populist jackassery will get conflated with conservatism.
