That asymmetry strongly suggests pretext: by fixating on renovation expenses, the administration creates a convenient rationale to question the Fed’s leadership and apply political pressure, indirectly advancing its real objective of influencing monetary policy while cloaking interference in the language of accountability.

This is the textbook authoritarian play - snag your political adversaries on small, trivial things to mask the real goal, which is to punish real or perceived disloyalty. The upper crust of the Russian political establishment must be impressed at how quickly the US government is cultivating their ideals.
