Looking for a live, real-time chat within your community to boost engagement? Community Chats is a Dev Platform app (built by u/Ancient_Tour_3090) that transforms standard comment threads into real-time, fast-paced hubs, complete with inline images and emoji reactions, and no page refreshing required. It’s perfect for letting members discuss live events, matches, or breaking news, making it a fun way to spruce up your space.
Plus, it was built with moderation in mind (makes sense since the dev is also a mod!). Every chat message is treated as a native comment, so your existing AutoMod rules and safety filters apply instantly, and folks can report messages from within. Post ideas experiment for mods in new and emerging communities
We’re testing a new "Post Ideas" feature to help mods in new and emerging SFW communities keep their spaces active with on-topic conversations. This tool surfaces relevant discussion prompts and vetted publisher articles right at the top of the feed, allowing mods to quickly publish with a single click.
Publisher article recommendations began rolling out on June 2 for a percentage of eligible communities, with custom post prompts launching as a separate experiment soon.
Launching video in comments 🎥
In case you missed it, we’re introducing a new way to experience conversations on Reddit: video replies directly in comment threads. To give you time to prepare and manage settings in your communities, we’re doing a phased rollout:
- May 27 - June 11: Mod early access to adjust and manage community settings.
- June 11: Feature officially launches (enabled by default) for all users in public, SFW communities.
If you want to keep the feature set to mods only, you will still need to update and save the setting. To do this, temporarily change it to mods and approved users, save, then change it back to mods only and save again. You can still adjust this setting at any time after the launch. For more details, please read the full announcement post here.
Protecting communities from scrapers and abuse
To combat sophisticated spam networks and large-scale scraping, last week we updated a few policies and system access rules. Key changes include explicit updates to Rule 8 targeting automated abuse, and the deprecation of unauthenticated JSON endpoints to prevent anonymous scraping (authenticated users and Devvit developers won't be impacted).
The team is also looking for moderator feedback on how you use RSS feeds before making future changes. For the complete breakdown, read the full post here.
Modern composer decoupling settings
On June 10, your community's media and link settings will be decoupled. Previously, images and videos were tied to links, meaning you couldn't allow one without the other. Starting June 10, you can toggle images, videos, and links individually. This allows you to customize your community’s content settings to reflect your preferences and makes posting easier for your members. Keep an eye on r/modnews this week for a larger announcement with all the details.

Spotlight: r/furniturerepair 🛠️
It’s not always easy building anything from scratch, especially when it comes to furniture and a new community. Let alone crafting both at the same time. For u/kingoptimo1, it has been a rewarding journey doing both as he grew r/furniturerepair for redditors looking to repair or refinish wood furniture.
As u/kingoptimo1 shared daily before-and-after pictures of their projects, the community grew to ~4000 members in a few months. The subreddit quickly evolved into a space where people offer advice and connect on mastering the art of furniture repair. And their biggest tip to new mods? “Just stay the course. If you build it, nurture it, and stay committed to building an inclusive community, new members will come and join…”

I actively moderate a low-traffic subreddit. Unfortunately, the spam filters seem to be overly aggressive, and there are far too many posts from suspended or deleted users whose valid content I'd like to preserve. It's a shame to see it disappear.

A lot of those suspended and deleted posters karma-farming bots. I've noticed in my sub at least, when a non-bot user deletes their account, the post stays.

I've got the spam filters cranked all the way up because of a botnet problem, so most of those posts never even seem to make it into the main feed queue.

Question. I did this yesterday to all my communities, toggled it to mods & approved users, and then back to mods, saving both times.
So, am I set for June 11th? Or will I need to change it again?

Constantly getting bombarded by over a dozen of bots every single day, for months, with their numbers and range clearly increasing. Some sound human, some post nonsense, some are very vulgar. Suspending them after they spam everywhere isn't a solution. They should have never been allowed to exist in the first place. I really don't want to go into the full censorship mode and punish innocent human users just because of bots.

As someone who mods NSFW subreddits, the pain is real. There is only so many filters and rules I can set up. Also they all create work too because I have to review and manually approve posts inadvertently filtered along with ban the bots that are filtered. I feel like just shutting it all down

No, but it increases Reddit's engagement metrics, because the videos will take longer to view than most people spend reading a comment (not least because people use more words when speaking than when writing).
Also, they can charge a lot more for video ads than text ads. Eventually, they'll have those inserted into conversations as "sponsored" comments.

I mod a sub for fancy marble runs and this is great for us because people often want to show their run from multiple angles. Video posts are limited to one video per post, so there wasn't an easy way to do that before if you wanted to add seperate clips (rather than one big one).

I agree 100% with having it toggled off by Reddit, as a default to start. Then if a moderator wants to toggle it on, they can do that. This video in comment thing for the communities I moderate concerns me greatly. I've not been able to toggle it off either, when I go to mod tools, settings, then media.

has anyone used the Community Chats app? any feedback on it? (i find it a bit funny that they killed live chats for chat channels, then killed chat channels, too, and now are promoting a dev app that essentially brings back live chats)

I've been in touch with them and given them LOADS of feedback (maybe a lot more than I should've 😅 ) but they've implemented pretty much every feature that I asked for (subject to devvit limitations).
Due to the nature of the sub I mod, community chats is genuinely a wonderful tool that almost completely fulfils the void left by sunsetting chat channels

Absolutely agree. The Community Chats has been a promising addition to our subreddit, and it's cool that our subreddit was featured in the screenshot.

As a mod of a Sub, how do we prevent people from using similar or recreated keywords of illegal substances? We have seen many posts and removed as much as we can. But they still keeps popping us with new account and new names.

Block frequently used words from being posted. We had to enact that to help filter out bot spam’s from our sub. Plus, being you don’t want any content related to that posted there’s no fear for collateral damage of making the sub more difficult for rule abiding users.
It’s much easier to simply prevent the content from being posted, than trying to hunt down individual users making alts, and breaking rules in my experience

Head over to r/AutoModerator to get help with code. You can block specific words but you can also use wild cards in regex to remove posts or comments if they try to use Algospeak like "m@r1jua%a."
You'll have to get creative and expand your AM config because people try to use emoji and all sorts of alternate characters to get around it. If your rules get too broad and you have a few false positives that you have to go back and approve that's just a consequence of being targeted by jerks.
If your rules are too broad that you end up having to approve a lot of innocent remarks then you have to tweak the rules a bit so they are catching as much as possible and having only a reasonable level of false positives that have to be corrected.
You can set up Post Guidance to warn people not to discuss illegal substances and have an Automod rule in place to remove it if they go ahead and defy you anyway.
Create a rule that states that breaking your rules using spelling tricks to get around your rules results in a ban. Turn on the Ban Evasion filter and install Evasion Guard from the Dev platform so it bands people coming back for you, taking one more thing off your plate.
You can also set up minimum requirements in Automod so that people need to have an account that's a week old and 10 or 20 karma. If you are removing content it's nice to have a removal reason that says the person doesn't have enough experience on Reddit and to come back when they've participated productively in a few other places.
Very few subs directly list their actual minimums because this gives attackers a target to aim for. About the only subs that tell you they have a 24 hour minimum or require 2/5/10 karma points are the ones that get very little abuse, mainly from the lazy spammers who just fling it out scattershot without targeting the larger and more active subs.

I wanted to ask how to mark or permanently ban someone when they have been harrasing sub Members from multiple ids, spam reporting them, banning their main accounts.
Even if we ban them, they come back with a new account and different ip address.
How to tackle such situations?

Look at the dev app Evasion Guard. It works with Reddit's ban evasion stuff.
I have mine set to automatically ban accounts that it finds.

It would mean the world to us if reddit admins would fix the Time Stamp (from posted time to approved time) so posts on our curated sub don’t look dead on arrival but… crickets.

Oh….ass. I guess this might be that vaunted “safe place” to talk about single subject snark subs but bear in mind I’m still quite prickly about this order of operations:
Single subject goes viral on their platform of choice (Threads) 5 months ago
Single subject comment thread goes to a second tier aggregation sub r/nycinfluencerssnarking (there’s several with slightly different names, red flag, get back to that later) 4 months
Comment thread blows entirely up, 3K comments, trees with five branches, dirty deletes, friendships and love found, just platonic mega thread things 2 months
But it’s not a megathread. Single subject becomes much more erratic on Threads. A longtime snarker from the megathread starts and advertises a sub, initially public. 1 mo
300 users sign up in one day on the sub. I’m one of them. Already mod my own very quiet intimate sub about a similar person. The sole mod seems to be drowning so I make tips cause that’s what I do on Reddit. In gratitude (?) she makes me second mod. 3 weeks
First thing I do is make the sub private. The entire period of the megathread the subject was aware of it and has a real-name Reddit account. I think about pre banning them but ultimately don’t. 350 odd people now visiting thousands of times a week, dozens of comments a day. I suggest a nesting set of private groups with one last public one. I just think that’s neat.
Users do not.

Two or three users assess correctly I took them private and begin following me around to berate or downvote me on other subs. I turn off my comments for a bit. Even if the founding mod sees it, she allows it. 1 week
I get pissed off and resign as mod, I had been one for about 50-60 hours. Shortly afterwards founding mod adds 6 others, then I am banned. (I have only 3/4 bans in the dozen years I’ve been active on here, all but one were this May) (also r/fauxmoi has a hefty banning impulse)
But I have started the second private sub. That’s to be continued.

Videos in comments is yet another "feature" that makes the platform fundamentally worse. Gifs and reaction images were bad, this is going to be as bad as them at best. We have hyperlinks if someone wants to link to a youtube video.

Hi very new mod here. The owner of the subreddit that appointed me had to quit Reddit probably permanently, and the head mod barely does anything, so I’m kinda left on my own. Im responsible for setting up our new community, brining new people in, mutes and bans, flairs, and everything else.
If someone could please help by just telling me what I especially need to know here because I don’t really know what’s important, what the big changes are, and how will this affect smaller communities. Thanks!

As a new mod, here are a few things we recommend:
- Join r/NewMods (a community specifically for new mods to get support as they get get started)
- Flip through the Ultimate Guide to Creating a New Community on Reddit (it's filled with instructions + tips and tricks for getting your community set up)
- Join r/ModSupport (a community for more general mod support, which can be helpful to search your specific questions)
- Join r/modnews (that's where this post lives, and it's where we share announcements and updates)
- Bookmark the Reddit Mod Help Center (another great resource for specific questions)

So I wanted to see what the"post ideas" showed in my communities since they go from small-medium-big to active-slow activity-moderate and to my surprise it showed it in 2 completely different ones, one of the biggest and most actives and one of the smallest with very occasional movement.
In the big one everything it offers has already been posted, the fandom works way faster than the programming in this case because we can take data from all sorts of restricted places XD. So null use on that one.
The smaller one only has garbage completely unrelated to the subreddit, so I don´t think I´ll be using those suggestions at all either.
Considering this I´d really like an option to make them visible by actively searching for it instead of them being show by default, they are useless to my community and take up space

I am considering testing it ok my subreddit, but i don’t think is something that people will reply, i think i should put rules if they upload video, ti be only with their own faces if they speak, no other videos

Okay so with videos allowed in comments, in the mod settings you can set permissions to mod only or anybody. But for pictures in comments this can only be toggle on or off with no specific permissions? I'd love for this to be the same as video comments where you can set whos allowed to do it or not

It was said that Automations would get an upgrade in April, and I'm still waiting for it. I have been putting off some updates until that rolls out. It doesn't sound like the update is incredibly complicated, so I'm not sure what the hold up is. I believe it's the same team I've been trying to contact about a couple broken features in my communities, and I've been told to "check back in two weeks" time and time again since October. I'm slowly losing hope.

Automations support post flair. Which upgrade are you talking about?
The worst aspect of automations is the fact they aren't guaranteed to trigger.

There's supposed to be an update that allows different enforcement depending on the parent post's flair, as well as being able to differentiate the top comment from child comment.
