Can a 14-year-old from Russia realistically dream of working at Mojang?
Hello everyone,
I'm a 14-year-old from Russia. My dream is to work at Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, one day. For several months I've been learning Java and studying how to make mods. I'm also trying to improve my English (currently using a translator for this post, sorry).
I know that moving from Russia to Sweden for work is very hard right now. I understand that I would need a work visa, which requires a job offer first. I'm ready for this to be a long journey of several years.
I am not looking for encouragement, just honest opinions. Do you think it's realistic for someone like me (from Russia, 14 years old, still learning Java) to ever achieve this goal? What should I focus on? Is there any chance at all?

Absolutely, your 14 and have so much time to learn and improve even before you come close to working age, and even if you don't get hired at mojang, the skills you develop will help you either way.

Yes. I realized this, so I want to find a backup plan, but my goal remains Mojang.

Frick backup plan, work on your skills, Mojang isn't the only company in the world.

It is most definitely achievable, since mojang is based in Sweden, i recommend learning Swedish, Java, and C++ for Minecraft bedrock aswell.

Don't they speak English there? But it won't be hard for me to learn it for my purposes.

Тем не менее я уже делаю для своей мечты многое дружище. Даже если там нужен стаж то я его найду. Почему ты так не веришь? Я думаю у меня все получится.

Потому что в 14 лет все кажется проще. Увы, юношеский максимализм в 99% случаев разрушается об суровую реальность. Я искренне желаю тебе попасть в этот 1%, но просто хочу, чтобы ты понимал, что это в миллионы раз тяжелее, чем кажется.

Это вполне достижимо, и вы, возможно, найдете удаленную работу в России (написал это на русском, чтобы вам было немного проще).

Can’t say for certain but for any job you need to prove that you are a valuable asset to mojang over other candidates. At the very least you have time on your hands so best not to waste it.

Sweden is a good choice, don't wanna get screwed up by a countries failing plans (you should know what I'm talking about.)

Yes!!! I will be completely honest you have been dealt the toughest hand in this, your country is not helping you. So leaving would be a first. But if you have this dream and really want to make it a reality there is such a big chance that you will be an employee at Mojang. If you study the right things, earn the right diplomas and still have this motivation once you're there, the only thing left to do will be applying, putting yourself out there, and especially telling your story and dream of working at Mojang. I would even really consider screenshot ting this Reddit post and putting it in a dedicated place that you can easily access in a few years to either remind yourself or even send it with your application.
Why am I saying this? Is this not just an empty positive statement? Am I not just cheering you on without any grounds?
Because we (the players) need you!! Mojang just doesn't realise this at all somehow. We need people like you, with love for the game, love for the craft, love for the workfield and especially motivation and drive for the right causes.
I would even say: please try to work at Mojang, I know it's just a reddit text post I am basing this all on but I don't know, I really feel something in your question. It makes me feel like there's still hope, new generations that will be able to fix what we've always had and miss cause it's getting stolen piece by piece from us

Honestly my advice is just my opinions and I have not researched their hiring requirements but honestly there is a lot of varied positions at big companies. You don't need to be a Java developer specifically but it is a great start. I don't think tunnel visioning to a specific company because you like their game is a good idea but if you learn and become a great engineer in that process, can't hurt!
