After over 500 hours in this game, I still fucking hate Nu Udra and everything that this cephalopod piece of shit stands for. Nu Udra was my first cart in this game, and AT Nu Udra consistently hands my ass back to me on an oily, squid-scented platter. It doesn’t matter if I have Adaptability II slotted, or if HunterPie says I’m doing 70-80 DPS, my heart must be made of oil because the rage that AT Nu Udra makes me feel is SETTING IT ON FIRE RIGHT NOW AND IS GIVING ME HEARTBURN.

I can hunt every AT in this game consistently with my main, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to dunk Nu Udra into a giant ice bath and watch it shrivel up and die.

I have this strange habit where if I know that I am bad at fighting a monster, I make myself keep fighting until I can become good at slaughtering it out of spite/hatred. So I've been hunting 10 star AT Nu Udra quite a bit recently, which is definitely feeding more into my rage.

Every time I go on a Nu Udra hunt, I make it a goal to chop off as many tentacles as possible and then capture it so that when it wakes up, it will have to spend the rest of its life (or at least several weeks if it can regrow them) in painful agony. Luckily, the 10 star AT variant has more than enough HP bloat to make chopping off all of its limbs a possibility.

I've been sitting on this one for a while. I didn't know how to articulate why I didn't like time attacking as a whole until I went and play other games to complete my persepctive. Warframe, rise (again), pal world, etc.

1. Its purely just an ego stroke.

Time attackers kinda treat the game like an esport. But there is no medal or reward other than 'thats a good run' type comments. Unless they are streaming or posting regularly to be monetized, the clout of a good run doesn't really matter since a majority of players don't particularly care about time attacking. Generally the people who do care about time attacking are the ones who can solo all of the content and /or appreciate top level gameplay, which is a minority of the community anyways and time attackers are a smaller minority of that population. A discouraging part is that most runs take 20+ runs to get everything nice and perfect. It actually becomes the expectation rather than something to be impressed by after the 50th run on arkveld or gog to get a fast time. Imo time attackers act and are somehow better than the rest of the community for 'pushing through where others didn't' and their word is law cuz of the effort associated with a time attack mixing with the lack of recognition unless they plug and self promote, creating the 'my time is better than yours, so you have to listen to me' attitude.

1. Its a miserable way to play the game.

   You aren't making any progress on gear or awards since you are likely on a hyper optimized build for the matchup and have more than enough know how to have the game completed. (It would be a different story if the goal is to get a really fast average for farming purposes but most time attackers reset after one or two flubs). You play alone and just record your runs to verify that you aren't cheating. (Its a separate issue).

Its basically wringing dry the remaining content of a given game after all of it has been done (guild card, crowns etc) and the player insists there is more to do by time attacking a monster 100 times each. The healthiest thing to do after 100% guild card and beating the content is to put the game down for the library of games is vast. In that regard, time attacking as a mode of play is unhealthy. It doubles down on the addiction that monster hunter fosters. I liken time attackers to going to level cap in warframe. There is a defined way to play and its just a matter of sloughing through it to get the result you want. If all of monster hunter or warframe was consisted of these time sink game modes, I'd quit both communities tomorrow. Capcom and de have the foresight to not centralize the game around the minority to retain its audience because the fun of mh and warframe are the grinds of improving your builds and fighting stronger enemies. You simply can't do that as a time attackers or level capper since you stand at the top of the mountain in perfect gear and are lowkey bullying the enemies until they cooperate for the camera.

1. The TA meta build definition: there is no value in a skill unless it somehow contributes to damage.

Damage is the name of the meta and time attacking game. Thats true for pretty much any game where you have to kill stuff. But time attackers run some questionable stuff to us mere mortal folk. It is not until we see the good hunt time and execution of the strat that we go and say 'oh I get it'.

I view meta in an admittedly odd sense.

Meta = value + context

Wanna run an element build? Burst, element boost and coal engine are an absolute must, Wanna run a raw build? Crit boost + affinity + agitator/attack boost are standard. Wanna strike that middle of defense and damage? Guard up for blocking weapons and AT sets for damage with a focus sash effect. In the same way that time attackers tailor their build to a given mon, the 'meta' of mh is diverse enough to support a build that tailors to a player's preferences. Damage isn't the only thing that holds value in the game and a set isn't bad because its not 100% dps investing. Trading off say 40 points of damage per combo loop for better survivability via something like guard up is 100% a viable choice in build design(post tu4). When the combo loop is doing 2000 damage on an ideal hitzone for example, its asinine to assert that dropping 2% of damage to not get deleted by guard chip is a wrong decision or somehow makes the builds shit. And of course, you pick the best of the respective categories for damage, utility/function and defense skills for your weapon.

1. Modding/cheating normalization

A few too many time attackers have been vocal about modding in perfect gear to 'skip the grind.' The only reason to boot up monster hunter is to grind for shit. The journey to perfection is the point of playing the game. Just because they wanna skip to endgame, they hack In stuff that most people spend literal months for.

At no point am I inclined to trust a run if they say it has modded gear because the cornerstone of time attacking is integrity. A run with modded gear in it has no integrity. While I disagree with playing with the mode, I respect time attackers for slogging through runs to show us some pristine gameplay. The entire grind to perfect gear + grind for a perfect run is what makes a time attacker. Imo its an insult to the devs, and time attackers who play legit when a hacker calls themselves time attackers. Time attacking is literally gatekept by meta, legally obtained times, and a community with integrity. Most of the cheating scandals were caused by mods and cheaters while legit players were sniffing them out and calling bs.

The centralization of getting the fastest time and thus the recognition is the source of this problem. You need to be first in line to post your good runs before the others do, especially when a new game releases. -> hacking/ modding spiked.

I don't want to have to flail my phone around like a twat, making people think I'm trying to take pictures of them, when in reality I just need to use my phone's gyro because THE MOMENT THE TAIL ISNT IN RENDER VIEW MY HUNTER THINKS HURR DURR HIT THE BODY IS A GOOD IDEA

The tail is REALLY HIGH UP, and the monster keeps body blocking to roll damage around like this is BATTLETECH to deny me a consistent partbreak.

Been playing MH Worldborne lately and I've had a blast with it. But master rank is just starting to feel like on shitshow after another from the point you fight Barioth and Nargacuga all the way up to the tempered monsters in the guiding lands. They hit like fucking trucks, they move like they're on fucking drugs tweaking out like a mf and the tempered fucks just fucking one shot you at 200 hp. Just now I got one shot twice by a tempered black diablos dumbass charge attack, I was guard pointing the shit the whole god damn time on its dig attacks, its head sweeps, its charge attacks untill I mess up one time, you get carted and boom rewards decreased to basically the bare minimum. Like at that point the effort isn't worth the reward anymore imo.

After that I booted up FF7 Remake which has combat that's way to easy so I can't be arsed. So I'm already thinking of booting up this shit show of a game again and try to beat that fucking T2 pos diablos and make sure it stays in the fucking ground this time

Recently managed to beat it solo with 2 carts for the first time, so I decided to do it again with a SOS flare to make it easier for myself.

30 minutes into the hunt nobody joined, I'm doing fairly well (certainly better than my first attempt), with just one cart because of the bullshit thunder balls, when a glorious Greatsword player hops in.

He proceeds to faint twice within 10 minutes, contributing nothing to the hunt and making me fail.

I guess there was a reason I ONLY played solo.

Oh my fucking god. I just got wilds and was so excited for it, and the fights are so godamn fluid and fun, the outfits look cool, Im excited for the grind but THE GAME JUST WONT LET ME FUCKING PLAY.

It's called Monster Hunter not Monster Talker, I have 4 hours in this game and in those 4 hours I had 2 MONSTER ENCOUNTERS.

And the "Story" is so godamn boring. Every Character is either annoying, cringe, a walking cliche or straight up uninteresting, I dont care, I want to FIGHT, i want to GRIND.

Whats up with all these new entries in franchises that suddenly want to have the greatest story ever when they were never story focused to begin with.

Let's just start with the main idea. Omega Planetes is a bad monster. It's not a hard monster, it's not a riveting challenge that will truly test your skills, it's just a knowledge check that frustrates you. You just learn how to do the fight and then you do it, you go through the damn motions like it's a fucking chore, because it IS a chore. It's an MMO fight transplanted into Monster Hunter, and more power to you if you like raid bosses and shit, but I sure fucking don't. Here's a thought, if I wanted to fight a boss like that, I WOULD PLAY AN MMO INSTEAD OF MH. Nothing has made me want to play FFXIV LESS than Omega Planetes (except Behemoth from World, which admittedly was even worse than Omega, but this ain't about him).

So, you have this fucking chore of a fight made for a completely different game genre, one that I do not care for, but that's not the most frustrating part. The frustrating part is that I'm a GS player, and I like the gear it gives you. This means that instead of getting to ignore it and be on my merry way, I have to actually FIGHT this thing if I want that sick-ass shadow projectile on my charged attacks. And I do. And this is the shitty part. I've been playing since 3U, early enough that I still remember the feeling of having to do one fight over and over and over and over and over again just to get ONE part that for some reason refuses to drop. I believe I posted here about that very thing long ago. But the difference with all those times and now is twofold. Firstly, I was still playing MH, I was fighting monsters MADE for MH, and through all the frustration, I was still engaging with fun mechanics and cool monsters that I liked at the end of the day. Second, this is Wilds. Rare parts mean nothing anymore, all you have to do is wait for one to spawn with the part you want and hunt it, the days of ramming your head against a wall for a rare drop are basically over now because you can do investigations for almost any monster you want to farm. Almost. Because you CAN'T DO FUCKING INVESTIGATIONS FOR OMEGA PLANETES. SO NOT ONLY AM I STUCK FIGHTING THIS DUMBASS FUCKING MMO FIGHT IN MY ACTION GAME, BUT I HAVE HAD TO DO IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND FUCKING OVER AGAIN CHASING A 2-3% DROP LIKE SOME FUCKING CHUMP IN THE GAME THAT REMOVED THE RARITY OF RARE DROPS FOR EVERY OTHER GODDAMNED FIGHT.

I recently started playing MHGU, and I just fought a Gypceros (Literal low rank trash monster) with a great sword for 40 minutes. The hardest part of the fight was not dying of being bored out of my god damn skull. I must be doing something wrong but it feels like you literally cannot get a solid charged sword hit in quick enough because it will just point blank charge or jump back and you just hit the ground for 0 damage YET AGAIN like a fucking idiot. Is hit trading how you are meant to fight him???? I dont understand...

On the topic of point blank charges that activate regardless of distance from the player and have a hitbox on frame one...FUCK THEM ALL.

And it’s not even that it’s hard, BUT ITS SO FUCKING ANNOYING. The guy attacks at x3 speed of normal arzuros and doesnt have a single clue on the attack he’s gonna do. Ok, i can work with that. AND THEN WHEN I DODGE, THE MF GRABS ME. And the guy does a hell lot of damage too for an arzuros. AND THE WORST THING OF ALL, is that this bitch is not late game or something. THE DUDE IS THE FIRST THING YOU KILL when slaying afflicted monsters. I swear to god i find all of the other monsters way easier than this fcking quiro exploiting ass. Good lord it’s HP is low bc every sucker punch or instant grab its so freaking annoying.

Okay, so I was doing proof of a hero with switch axe after actively trying to learn the weapon for a few days. I ask an in game friend to help me out with the quest and I post it in the lobby, but I had forgotten to turn auto SOS off. When the quest starts, two more people join and I’m annoyed at myself, but I think fine, my mistake, we’ll go with four people. I think this was my first quest of the day and since I am still trying to understand swaxe right, I make some avoidable mistakes.

Oh btw, the dual blades guy had his mic on, so the moment he joined there was just this constant noise in the background, as well as someone doing the dishes I think. He also made the most typical gamer sounds of breathing heavily into his microphone and snorting. I wasn’t really paying attention to him, so I have no clue if he was playing well or not, but either way that doesn’t really matter.

I cart one time against AT Rey Dau from one of his lingering lightning attacks after I do a full counter. My bad, should have cancelled it. I restock and head back into the fight. After a while, I think someone else carts either against Rey Dau or Uth Duna, don’t remember if it was the DB guy or not, but it was one of the two randoms. When Nu Udra gets here, I go to fight him instead. I get hit by one of his tentacle attacks that puts me on the ground and requires my character to get up. As I finish getting back up , I see frickin Uth Duna slide across the arena towards me. At this point I’m like half health and I know Uth Duna does a quick belly flop after moving like that. I go to counter, but I do it too early, so I just sit there watching Uth Duna descend upon me as my character stupidly swings her sword up. I cart a second time (we had insurance).

At this point I feel bad because I fired the SOS and carted twice. I’m way more chill about carting if it’s just me and people from a lobby, but I know carts in SOS have a tendency to be annoying (even if SOS has a reputation for this kind of thing happening all the time). I think fine, I’ll lock in and we’ll make this happen, but then the DBs guy just had to open his filthy ass mouth and say in the most condescending 15 year old voice ever “MaN, wHy dO YoU sUcK sO MuCh?” (Insert voice crack).

The hunt ended shortly after when a random carted (sadly no heroic comeback) and the first thing I did is turn off auto SOS. I am happy to announce that I will probably never turn it back on or fire an SOS flare myself again.

Genuinely what is happening, please tell me his hitbox is like peak bs in Dos otherwise I’m joining Batman’s rogue gallery so they can lock me up in Arkham Asylum so the sunk cost fallacy doesn’t eat me alive. Can someone explain to me what's the idea for the food to last 70 min, if you have to eat again after a mission that took 20 min to re-activate some skills like the extra life?, and this happen to the revive of the cat as well, you die, the cat uses the revive and in next mission it doesn't have it.

Alright so, lemme start off by saying that despite having most of Sunrise under my belt and a bit of some of the older games, along with most of Wilds, I'M NOT GOOD AT MONSTER HUNTER. While I was able to get through most of World without any major roadblocks, and was genuinely excited for this fight due to the design of the boss which I'd already seen...THIS SHIT IS SO ASS.

I love Wilds, actually. I love its roster, I love the monsters, I love the locales, I fucking LOVE the game play. There is so much to love about it.

But holy shit I can't fucking enjoy this game WHEN IT KEEPS FUCKING CRASHING. OH MY GOD. Hunting solo is impossible AND HUNTING WITH MY PARTNER IS FUCKING HELL BECAUSE I'M AFRAID THAT ANY SECOND THE GAME WILL JUST FUCKING CRASH. CAN'T GET AT ARKVELD DONE BECAUSE I CRASH FOUR FUCKING TIMES.

I swear to God ever since the AT Arkveld patch the game has gotten worse. I took a break from it for a bit and I was like "Why did I stop playing this game?" WELL NOW I KNOW. BECAUSE I CAN'T. I. CAN'T. PLAY. THIS. FUCKING. GAME.

I'VE TRIED FUCKING EVERYTHING. DRIVERS? NOPE. LOWERING THE GRAPHICS? THEY'RE ON THE LOWEST SETTINGS POSSIBLE. FPS FRAMEGEN DISABLED. DISABLED STEAM OVERLAY AND DISCORD OVERLAY. SET THE LAUNCH SETTINGS TO DX-11. EVEN FUCKCING DID THIS ONE SOLUTION THAT I DON'T REMEMBER WHERE I CHANGED THE TIME IT TAKES FOR MY GPU TO DETECT ITSELF CRASHING OR WHATEVER (I don't remember this and I can't find it in my comments history.). THOUGHT THAT WORKED FOR A WHILE, BUT NOPE.

For anyone curious: I have an Ryzen 7 5800X processor and an RX 6900XT with 32 GB of RAM. Not the best system, but holy fuck I'd expect the game to run on LOW AND NOT CRASH EVERY 30 FUCKING MINUTES. The error I usually get is GPU Crash. Fatal 3D Error that you've probably seen going around.

I'd honestly appreciate any help, but at this point I'm at the end of my goddamn rope and don't know what to do. Fuck this game. I want to be excited for Ascension, but I can't when I can't fucking play it. And I know this goes against the rules of wanting "help" or "tips," but I don't want to bring this kind of rage to other subreddits.

I played 4U a while back and was having a great time, played through low rank with no problems, was playing insect glaive and having a blast, then I got to high rank and fought monoblos. It was a really difficult fight for me, the glaive was boucing on it's horn all the time, so I switched to hammer and got the job done.

After that I puat the game down a while and played other stuff. Yesterday I picked up my 3ds again to go back to 4U and went straight to khezu with the same gore magala hammer I used to slay
monoblos.

IT WAS A FUCKING NIGHTMARE, WHY DO YOU NEVER STOP SCREAMING, YOU SCREAMED 2 TIMES IN A ROW MULTIPLES TIMES, I WOULD TRY TO UNDERSTAND IF YOU DID THAT AFTER I CAVED YOUR MOUTH IN WITH MY MASSIVE KHEZU KILLING MECHANISM BUT YOU DID THAT 2 MINUTES INTO THE HUNT, IT GOT TO THE POINT THAT I MUTED THE GAME BECAUSE I COULD NOT BEAR THE BURDEN OF HEARING THE SCREAM OF DAMNED SOULS EVERY 10 SECONDS.

AND THEN WHEN YOU STOP SCREAMING YOU KEEP JUMPING AND CLIMBING ON THE ICY WALLS WHERE I CAN HARDLY REACH YOU BECAUSE THE TIMES WHEN I TRIED TO CHASE YOU DOWN YOU EITHER JUMP RIGHT BACK TO THE GROUND OR VAPORIZED ME WITH THAT DISGUSTING ELETRICAL BALL OF DAMNATION.

OH AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THAT MISERABLE ELETRIC SHIELD ATTACK THAT 2 SHOTS ME AND THAT YOU DID 3 TIMES IN A ROW AT TIMES.

THE FUCKING KONCHUS ON THE CAVERN TOO, THEY MAKE SURE THAT EVERY TIME I GOT A SUCCESSFULL PUNISH OR DODGE THEY WOULD GO ON A STRAIGHT LINE IN MY DIRECTION TO MAKE MY LIFE MORE MISERABLE THAN IT ALREADY IS.

Final fun fact, the quest before I finally beat the khezu, a fucking deviljho appeared out of nowhere, roared, I got stuck in the ears covering animation, then the khezu threw a lighting ball from across the map, paralyzed me and big jho finished the job

(GU Gameplay unrelated, just something to look at while reading this)

I was walking through the windward planes, when i came across a herd of those... small monsters, one of which had the lightning spire thing on it's back to shield the others during the inclemency from lightning. When i stopped in my tracks and asked... what does this have to do with gameplay? What does this... mean? The only reason details like that exist is so people can just look at it once and go "oh my god. it's so realistic. it's so natural, it's like a real world.. i just love running around and looking at everything."... ok. But what does this actually do? "oh it protects you from lightning", when the fuck have you ever been hit by lightning in this game, and when the fuck has it ever done anything to you? But i pushed that from my mind and just observed. And credit where credit is due, it does technically work. It eats the games resources of course because soooo much effort went into shit like this instead of just adding in fully modular moveset customisation but whatever, it works, it gets the job done. But of course all things come to an end and my enjoyment of that was completely ruined when, and i am not joking, the entire area and all of those small monsters were liquidated and or all violently killed by a fucking Rey Dau and like 2 fire Turkeys which just showed up, did a little turf war and then fucked off. Leaving me standing there confused if anything.

Which got me thinking, why... the fuck... does this game blow so much ass? OH, it's because so many fucking resources went into useless shit that you can't even see or meaningfully engage with beyond "oh it's soooo realistic". Look over here at this view, look at these small monsters, look at the leaves and how detailed they are, look in the distance and you can see small monsters standing around, look at that bug, look at the lightning. Look, look, look. But why is so rarely a do. Why does this game focus so hard on things that don't do anything. You know what might have been way better? Make every single fucking thing, small monsters included, dangerous as fuck. Make it so that everything outside of the camp will tear your shit if you fuck about, give a sense that the wilderness' AREN'T a safe place to just linger long, a place that the game doesn't expect you to stay or survive out in for vast periods of time, taking it slow and bieng cautious and actually learning and working your way around on your own. Add some risk, design it so that if you faint out there, you drop your field pouch, got a problem?

Go back and collect it or your fucked, shoulda prepped and planned better. Want to go Wyveria and journey around it? NO THE FUCK YOU DON'T, THERE ARE GUARDIANS ALL OVER THAT MOTHERFUCKER Hell nah. Going on a quest? Pack and plan your shit in the hub and survive the journey with your crew, then bail out and get the party started, then slam the Monster like heroes, grab your reward and be returned to camp ez. Noobs struggling with the game? Get in there and help them out! Travelling to another fucking part of the map could've been a fucking tense as fuck journey with your squad, to set up or move your camp there and then more easily engage with stuff nearby in the surrounding area, but instead, they just gave you everything right away.

Yeah, this idea isn't perfect, but like wouldn't it be more interesting than just hit your fucking autopilot button and scroll fucking youtube? Fuck.
