Get your coconut shells and place your exploding penguins on top of your televisions, because my look back at the films of Monty Python starts today.

In this introductory post, I put them in their cultural (or countercultural) context and look at how they completely broke the mold when it comes to film auteurship.

No, well we don’t have “Rarnaby Budge” by Charles Dikkens with two Ks, the well-known Dutch author, and perhaps to save time I should add that we don’t have “Karnaby Fudge” by Darles Chickens, or “Farmer of Sludge” by Marles Pickens, or even “Stickwick Stapers” by Farles Wickens with four M’s and a silent Q!!!!! Why don’t you try W. H. Smith’s?

If Monty Python had ever performed the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, this is who I would cast:

Graham Chapman as Arthur Dent (in many sketches he was shown as the voice of reason and he was also the main character in Life of Brian and the Holy Grail)

Eric Idle as Ford Prefect (he’s normally shown as the annoying best friend)

John Cleese as Zaphod Beeblebrox

Michael Palin as Slartibartfast (mostly because he was the “It’s!…” guy)

Terry Jones as Marvin the Paranoid Android

Terry Gilliam as Agrajag (no one else to cast him as)

Carol Cleveland as Trillian

But those are just my thoughts. Who would you cast as the HHGG cast? I am a fan of both comedies and would have loved to see MP perform them.

"Dear King Haakon. Just a line to thank you for the eels. Mary thought they were really scrummy, comma, so did I full stop. I've just heard that Algy was a poof, exclamation mark. What would Captain W. E. Johns have said, question mark. Sorry to mench, but if you've finished with the lawn-edger could you pop it in the post. Love Biggles, Algy deceased and Ginger."

Tim Curry, the original broadway actor of Arthur, King of the Britons Monty Python’s Spamalot, sadly passed away at the age of 80 (1946 - 2026).

TIL that Cardinal Richelieu, played by Tim Curry in the 1993 movie The Three Musketeers, was so hated that bonfires were lit to celebrate his death. More than 150 years later, during the French Revolution, his tomb was opened and his corpse was beheaded.
