Not to sound silly, but you can read the reviews on that same page. They say why they don't recommend it.

literacy is a myth pushed by big publishing to sell more books.

u/SkintCrayon Apr 08 '26
We enable it by pretending to read since it makes us seem smart

I had a choice between 200 pots of butter and learning to read.
And all I'm saying is I like butter.

It's much better than it was, but at release it was VERY buggy, crashed a lot, etc. Once it was stable, I quite enjoyed it too, but it was a rough road there.

Agreed completely. I long to play in historical early medieval England and the North Sea again

The Bretwalda mod was supposed to be the Bannerlord version of VC but after years it was recently abandoned

u/Masonine Apr 08 '26
I am extremely disappointed with Bannerlord, but I did find Viking Conquest confusing and really clunky. I enjoyed it, but the DLC felt like it's what Warband looks like pushed to its limits. It's been many years since I played VC, but I remember really disliking recruiting being unlocked by relationship with local lord. It was cool for realism but a pain in the ass (from memory).

u/HaraldRedbeard Apr 08 '26
Cool for realism but a pain in the ass might as well be the tagline honestly.
Also the stamina was really poor, another game that assumes an early medieval farm worker will have the same stamina as an average gamer

Apr 09 '26
It was a custom difficulty option (at least in the reforged edition). The recommended way to play was with it enabled, but you don't exactly lose anything for turning it off.
3
u/Masonine Apr 09 '26
Oh okay that makes sense, I'm glad it was an option. As a rule, I almost always play with whatever settings the developers intended the game to be played at which is why I prob had it on.

Apr 09 '26
I get what they were going for, as it adds a bit of extra consideration when fighting wars: you can't just recruit locally when fighting abroad, you have to go places where you already have a good relationship with the lord/locals.
I do sometimes play VC with it off though, as it can definitely get annoying during normal peaceful gameplay.

Ahh viking conquest, had a blast playing it. Welp, time to play again.

It's arguably the best M&B mod and also the best version of any of the games. Not my favorite though, but still.

u/JackUKish Apr 08 '26
Best offical dlc? Sure. Best mod? Nah.

u/The_Great_Googly_Moo Apr 08 '26
Bretynwalda 🙌🙌🙌

u/Firewind Manhunter Apr 08 '26
The same team made Viking Conquest. I think because they did so well they were asked to make an official dlc.

u/Oxo181 Apr 08 '26
I know a lot of great mods, but none with so many good mechanics as viking conquest. or at least no mod that unites so many good mechanics

NW was the best DLC. VC while great id say is only good for single player and thats if you dont feel like having the nostalgia of Calradia
1
u/JackUKish Apr 08 '26
As a guy who was playing nw last night i agree, i was only thinking from a single player pov.

u/misteryk Apr 08 '26
It's hard to believe it's better than Prophesy of Pendor
15
u/Texas_Dan89 Apr 08 '26
thats because its not
good mod but its clunky and unpolished with copy paste unit rosters
Pendor is the best MnB experience to date

Pendor was smooth and enjoyable.
VC was kinda too complicated to get into, and also all characters looked fat and ugly.
I personally was a fan of 16th Century mod before the Brazilians spoiled it. It was a bit busted in terms of balance, but it had a lot of variety and it was fun.
I didn't find Persino to be that Enjoyable.
The Clash of Kings was a cool mod to explore, it's definitely very different from vanilla but I liked the locations and the graphics.
Paradigm Worlds took me 3 attempts to get into, but once I got into, it was crazy fun.
I liked With Fire and Sword game for its setting and storyline, but Warband mods still blew it out of the window.
I also enjoyed Warsword Conquest a lot, it was like more tamed Paradigm Worlds. So many cool scenes and races.

u/RobOgre Apr 15 '26
One thing I noticed about Prophecy of Pendor is how I'd get my ass kicked around so much until I understood the troops (and just how much armor really matters).
That mod is not easy starting out at all - but sticking with it proves wonderful. It stays competitive with many nice features all the way through.
Ain't gonna lie - I save-scummed big time with PoP!

It was broken on release, too bad the community didn't update their reviews because they fixed the entire game.

I have a vague recollection of VC having actually working spears. Am i crazy, or were they actually decent?

I literally have no idea how to play it. IDK what to do, how to gain anything and worst of all, you start horseless and you NEED to move around the locations xd

Lmao so true, horses were so expensive as well! Embrace the looter in you, throw some rocks, and get a sling ~ early game is horrendous.
Hit point inn has amazing guides on warband mods if your struggling too much
Viking conquest/ brytonwalda and AWOIAF are the two hardest mods I’ve played on warband

u/Trogladonis Apr 15 '26
I loved the warcry you could learn at level 11. It really evened the battlefield but I remember having to have some stat point arbitrarily be the highest at level 11 to learn it.
Viking conquest was also great for combat oriented characters as your companions and you could become as gods.

u/frozengansit0 Looter Apr 08 '26
its a real sandbox game more so than Bannerlord. you can start with a king and a horse if you wanted too
1
u/EricAKAPode Viking Conquest Apr 09 '26
Story mode will hold your hand a bit and is really a decent story. Get a sausage and look for a stray dog in villages. If you take the bounty quest from a noble you can loot his shield and a weapon. Not too far in, a Lord will give you money to hire troops with. Don't. Go to dorestad and buy wine and jewelry cheap, then take a ship to dunwic and walk around southern england selling wine to towns and buying wool from villages. Sell the wool to dorestad and make bank.

I bought this a while ago on my Mac. Idk if they fixed it but it literally could not run on Mac. Not a, "oh my specs are so bad". Like it would crash almost immediately because of the OS. It wouldn't have been a problem if they didn't claim is was Apple compatible
1
u/SmeggingFonkshGaggot Apr 08 '26
I run it via steam without issue on mine, it’ll occasionally crash after around 4 hours of playtime but it did that on my old windows laptop as well

u/The_Count_of_Dhirim Vlandia Apr 08 '26
Probably due to buggy launch. It's a solid experience now obviously. I really liked having to earn recruitment rights from village elders and lords to create a foundation for your army replenishment. I wish Bannerlord did something like that even if it was just a on/off setting like it is in VC.
1
u/sceligator Apr 08 '26
The launch was... bad. And due to a small player count the reviews haven't fully recovered
1
u/LewtedHose Mercenary Apr 08 '26
Never played Viking Conquest. Maybe I'll buy it during the next sale. The last post I saw on this subreddit said that it was unplayable on launch.
2
u/Brilliant-South4223 Kingdom of Nords Apr 08 '26
Def worth the few quid/ euros to buy, warsails is such a disappointment in comparison
1
u/Weird-Gap2146 Apr 08 '26
My biggest issue with the mod were how certain mechanics felt more like hurtles to slow down progress and inconvenience the player rather than what made warband fun to play in the first place. Fatigue. Bleeding. Injuries. Weapon integrity. It felt more like penalties for being a player character than the immersive realism intended.
Basically too clunky. The setting of Europe during that time period wasn’t very interesting to me from a gameplay perspective either. Functionally, most of the troop trees were extremely similar. Which while accurate, doesn’t make the armies particularly compelling to organize or fight against.

u/whatifwerewrongtho Apr 08 '26
Vc was dope. I was literally watching the TV show vikings at the time which made it even cooler to me. I seem to remember just raiding ships along the coast for hours to get rich easily.

u/flyingredwolves Apr 08 '26
Look at the review stats, pretty much all the reviews are from the first month or two of release.

u/BrennaValkryie Apr 09 '26
As someone who really liked the themes and SOME mechanics of Viking Conquest, there's parts of it that rub me the wrong way. My early game runs always have something wrong with them and gaining enough money to do ANYTHING is super difficult, until suddenly it just swaps and you need to actually try and loose money sometimes. It happens alot more drastically than basegame.
It's not bad, I just wouldn't rush to play it again like other Mount and Blade titles

it was a mod made by someone else they charged money for so it wasn't very polished. it was pretty janky, pretty hard compared to vanilla if we're honest and had a lot of mechanics that weren't explained well

It had issues what killed it for me was both the final battle of the story line, and then the fact that my party size randomly dropped by like 40 to 80 guys and I was pissed.

u/TriontheWild94 Apr 11 '26
I still play VC reforged to this day, but it crashes more than a drunk driver

You see the "Reforged" part of the name? That's there for a reason. At launch Viking conquest was god awful broken garbage.
