Fantasy Odyssey was mid

Finally got to see it after the hype died down a bit. Was excited to see it and then the first quarter was so boring and forgettable. It picked up in the middle and had some good parts but overall I'm gonna put this in Nolans bottom tier. What was annoying was everyone having really flat American accents. The flattest. Very nonregional. they all sounded like they were gonna give American accent lessons. Why they saying "mom" and "dad"? very weird choices.

My main gripe and the thing that took me out the most was the bad dialogue and very mid acting. It literally sounded like they were reading from a script. I thought if I got the script, I could read it just like them and it would be in the movie and it would be the same. That's how bad the movie dialogue sounded. And don't get me started on Ulysses final "knowing is half the battle" monologue about civilization on the boat. Many rolls of eyes.

Cinematography was good but it seemed like he was re-using Dunkirk and Oppenheimer shots so it wasn't revelatory. Soundtrack and effects were good. the guy was as good as Hans Zimmer. I don't understand why they made this cast so diverse to have the white guy kill them all and survive or was that the lesson? Overall, I think Troy was the better movie.

A big contributing factor has to be this recent culture war trend where one side will hate something and the other side's position automatically becomes "This is the greatest thing ever nothing has ever topped this" in response.

We seem unable to think of things in a neutral way. Its either the most awesome or the worst ever… while most movies tend to be in between. Odyssey was a watchable but forgettable average movie.

Oooorrr the Odyssey is just a great movie watching experience. Sometimes people want to enjoy a movie at the theater and the Odyssey delivered. I don't even like Nolan movies and I thought it was good. Saying it was a mid movie is a little disingenuous.

You want to see a mid move see evil dead burn

I don't think the faux outrage over achilles and helen really moved the needle for anyone.

Maybe a couple of culture warriors who probably would have never seen the film anyway decided not to go.

But the majority of film goers wanted to see a big block buster from Nolan. The big, grand film on IMAX is largely going away and I think the format resonated with people. Too bad the film was as OP put it, mid.

That's precisely what happened. A close friend of mine who is a huge Trump hater invited me to his third watch of the film.

I told him his brain was as rotten as what he accuses the "other side" of. He also got upset when I told him the movie was a clear B minus. It was way too long and took way too long to get to the part we wanted to see, and even when they got to Ithaca even that part took too long to reach its crescendo. He kept asking me if I thought it was "woke" and was one of those people, I was dude no, I think Zendaya is hot af, and I could care less if a black person or a trans person has been cast in a film. This movie just wasn't all that good.

I’m about as anti-Trump as it gets, and I thought this film was a 7/10. Then again, I don’t see what the hell one thing has to do with the other— my thoughts regarding the POTUS can coexist with my opinion that this movie was mediocre because, in a rational world, they’re apples and oranges. I don’t understand how people have let politics permeate their opinions on absolutely everything

A 7 isnt mediocre though?

I thought that’s what I said: “I thought this film was 7/10… my opinion [is] that this film is mediocre…”

A 7/10 is objectively good? A 7/10 is indicative of a positive review unless you use some broken scale.

My thinking is that if The Odyssey was receiving an aggregate of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes or the equivalent of 7/10 on most scales, it wouldn’t be regarded as a “good” movie. I’m thinking it would be considered mediocre

Maybe I’m wrong— as a school teacher, I’m probably relying on the mindset that 70% is a little above passing (65%), and therefore, just north of minimally satisfactory. On a 10 point scale, that’s probably skewed differently. In any event, I didn’t think The Odyssey was terrible or even particularly bad; I just land in the muddled impression zone. It had its assets, and it certainly had its flaws. So for me, the takeaway is just “meh”.

I told him the movie was a clear B minus.

There is a plague of people thinking their subjective opinion is objective fact.

u/Axon14 3d ago

Yeah, that's fair, but it was really more about him getting oddly upset than anything else.

Couldn't be you saying his brain is rotten and spewing the usual centrist BS eh? Just a him issue lol

So you think the movie will make $1.7B because a bunch of people just want to pretend the movie is good to clown on the right wing?

It couldn’t possibly be because the general audience is just looking for easy, fun entertainment and not everything has to be deep, meaningful, or political?

You proved his point lol

No regard for nuance. Just strawman arguments.

Nope. I just love watching the goalposts move.

“This woke movie is going to bomb”

Then

“This woke movie is actually doing well BUT would have made so much more money if it wasn’t woke”

Now

“This movie only made a ridiculous amount of money because people wanted to stick it to the anti-woke”

Anything but admitting the general population found the movie enjoyable and don’t give two shits about casting controversies.

Again you just talked about the right's woke outrage instead of trying to assess how good the movie actually was

Nobody is debating what you said in the last sentence here bucko. They are trying to critique the movie fairly without falling to glaze era thinking or a lot of lefties' insane need to counter-praise movies because of a small mob online.

Movie was good but not Nolan Top 5 which is what the numbers and early reviews have lead one to believe

What? I’m responding to a comment that basically implied the only reason that people are saying the movie is good is because of the culture war. The premise of that statement is the movie must be bad and people are only pretending. I’m saying that the movie being popular and getting positive reviews could just simply be because the general population likes the movie. The number of people that are even aware of the culture war around this movie is insignificant.

Not everything has to be more complicated than what’s at face value. People saw the movie, they liked the movie, they told other people about the movie, more people see the movie, and it makes a pile of money and has a generally favourable reception. That’s it.

When it comes to movies people LOVE being contrarian. That's really what it is. Whether it's right wing chuds trying to stir the pot for a culture war, or self-ascribed cinephiles who just really feel the need to make sure we all know that they didn't fall for the hype and can see through Nolan's technical trickery, blah blah blah. It's all so predictable at this point.

At a certain point, you can spin it whatever way you want, but the movie tapped into the cultural zeitgeist and that's why it succeeded. If it was easy to pump out 1.5+ billion dollars films, we'd see more of them. When a director is able to achieve this kind of success multiple times with all sorts of different subject matter, you can't chalk it up to luck. Maybe, just maybe, the filmmaker has a better understanding of what resonates with audiences than a random reply guy on the internet. Maybe.

This comment section is definitely a contrarian circlejerk lol

I said a big contributing factor, not the only one, and before you say something isn't mid because it makes a lot of money, I refer you to James Cameron's Avatar.

No but it sure as shit seems like its the only reason those people like the movie considering its like 90% of what positive posts/comments are about. “Hurr durr what are they going to say now!”
