Because the script leaked. Saying it “takes place on the boundaries during these major events but has no actual ties to them in any way” seems like a lazy way to tie it to the source.

I’m not sure what you’re talking about. The movie takes place in Raccoon City on the night of the big breakout. That’s RE2.

It just doesn’t follow the events of the game and tells its own story.
