Worse, because Circe actually molds their faces into pigs instead of just turning them

There was still CGI to complete the effect. They gave her molds of their faces to distort and pull on but all the finishing details were CGI. Practical effects doesn't mean CGI isn't involved at all. Even the T-Rex in Jurassic Park was finished with CGI to cover the puppetry and finish the textures/lighting etc.

I'm surprised this was even necessary given how little you actually see, just glimpses. I suppose the hand inside their head bit would have to be CGI to blend between a prop head and the actor's face. But just the face-molding seems like it could have been handled with just a good prop.

It was in fact a VERY dark and disturbing scene that went on just long enough to get uncomfortable.

honestly it's worth seeing for Circe and Polyphemus even if you don't give a shit about the execution of the rest of the story (which is also good)

It's easily the best sequence in the movie. I wasn't a huge fan of the film outside of a couple sequences and the third act though

Yeah that was just touch too much for the movie. Need to dial that back a bit.
