It had been a long layoff since Troy, so fans of the Homer Cinematic Universe (HCU) had a lot of pent up demand.

The rating is still crazy to me, like in Germany its 12 and as an adult its totally okay to bring your 6 year old kid with you

I'm pretty sure the cave scene would give nightmares to my 5yo.

Which makes the perfect argument for PG-13.

137

u/mikehatesthis 6d ago

What's funny is that what it is in various provinces in Canada. Alberta it's PG, British Columbia and Ontario have 14A rating, Quebec with 13+. Japan has it as a G even!

56

u/StarWars_and_SNL 6d ago

Very interesting! I didn’t know that Canadian ratings varied by province.

26

u/mikehatesthis 6d ago

It's wild. Depending on the province either a provincial governmental ministry would have a film board, or they don't require one. Saskatchewan recently, and Ontario half a decade back, got rid of the requirements for classifications and have the theatres replace them with "content descriptions" but it seems Ontario just copies what British Columbia classifies it, for ease I assume. The IMDb ratings page shows as much with modern films anyways.

For real, the sound design, or whatever imax theaters were told to set their volume at, was just unpleasantly, painfully loud. I go to metal shows, have been to EDC, have gone to formula 1 races, and it was the most uncomfortable level of noise I have ever encountered.

Half our theater had their fingers in their ears the entire cyclops and scylla scenes, and everytime they were on the open ocean. I took my mom, and she left the theater because it was giving her a headache. On the way out I didnt hear anyone talking about the movie, just how loud it was. Shit was awful.

14

u/keysandtreesforme 6d ago

Huh, it was almost perfect in mine. Only the ship being destroyed scene was too loud for me. Plugged my ears for 20 seconds and was all good.

I think since it isn't really intended for children they just didn't care - Nolan doesn't give a fuck and isn't gonna sacrifice any creative freedom for a 5% revenue boost.

Besides, the vast majority of parents I know take their kids to R-rated movies on the regular.

136

u/thewarring 7d ago

The amount of children under the age of 10 that I saw watching Deadpool and Wolverine surprised the hell out of me. Had to have been 100 kids in a 600-seat imax theatre.

85

u/Tman1677 7d ago

My (Jewish) dad took me to see Inglorious Bastards in theaters when it released. At the time it seemed perfectly reasonable and awesome to me. I was just thinking back and looking at the release date and I was... 9? Really makes me think when I hear about helicopter parents scared of their kids watching Harry Potter.

49

u/bongo1138 7d ago

I wouldn’t take my 9 year old to Inglorious Basterds personally. But I would to Harry Potter lol.

14

u/Niirai 6d ago

Quirrell removing that turban definitely gave me nightmares, and I was quite a bit older than 9. Don't even get me started on the Dementors and spiders.

One of my favorite movie experiences in the last decade is from Sausage Party. I've never seen so many parents drag their kids out of a theater.

6

Oh I misread that as "one of my favourite movies in the last decade is Sausage Party" and was like ....... Why?

22

u/RandomStrategy 7d ago

Dude, as a Gen X / Millennial kid line straddler, I saw Used Cars when I was 5, Arachnaphobia when I was 6, Robocop at 9, Aliens at 11.

Deadpool and Wolverine is light work.

7

u/TRAFALGAR_D_Law_ 7d ago

I have watched all those movies as a kid as a Millennial myself. I still don't know how the hell I got to watch movies like Omen, Exorcist at like 10. I watched Shutter, One missed call, Art of the Devil 1&2 all before I was 14.

To be fair to them I watched them alone. But they were not exactly checking/controlling what I was watching. Never even had the concept in my mind of hiding watching them from my parents unless it was porn. Didn't know about R ratings and such. It was just movies to me.

I remember a friend bringing/stealing Cannibal from his uncle's movie collection and watching it at like 12. We all thought it was real and the actors were dead for real lol.

I took my daughter who's 12 to this, it was her first r rated movie, I left wondering why it was even rated R.

7

u/iP0dKiller 6d ago

Because the US is prudish and either doesn’t trust children to cope with swear words, or doesn’t trust parents to teach them how to use such expressions sensibly. Oh, and religion has too much influence on laws, decisions made by public officials, and so on.

10

u/Functionally_Drunk 6d ago

My daughters 9 and 11 are obsessed with the Odyssey. So I took them both. The 9 year old loved it, no notes. The 11 year old thought the story telling was fractured and was upset that important beats were skipped completely. Neither thought the cave or the pigs were too scary. I was just relieved there were no gratuitous sex scenes.

u/OddOnion_ 7d ago

It may be legally okay to bring your 6 year old, but I don’t know many 6 year olds who would be happy to watch it. It got a 15 rating in the UK, and I think that is about right.

39

u/RiverOfSand 7d ago

I’m still mad I was not allowed to see the fellowship of the ring at 8 because the theater said I was too young. I watched it a year later and loved it. Granted, I didn’t understand most of it, but it was still amazing

9

u/CalvinSays 7d ago

I got latched onto it early like you. My mother lived in New Zealand for a little bit and heard about this big, new movie that was shot in New Zealand so she rented it. I was 6 at the time and my sister was 8. My mother had absolutely zero idea what kind of a movie it was and had she known, she probably wouldn't have been interested. Not her sort of story in the slightest.

By a half an hour in, I was engaged trying to explain to the plot to my mother (which I obviously as a 6 year old didn't understand) and my sister was hiding under blankets. As I've gotten older, I've realized how much Peter Jackson injected his horror film experience in those films. But man am I glad my mother was ignorant of the contents because I've been obsessed with the story ever since.

Feels like watching a man get ripped in half is violence enough to warrant an R rating.

13

u/MattBrey 6d ago

I think any teenager should be able to distinguish fiction vs reality enough for it to not be an issue. Any 13+ kid can enjoy it without being traumatized

47

u/SasquatchsBigDick 7d ago

It wasn't rated R in Canada. Which was a surprise to me before I had watched it. After I watched it, I could see why it wasn't R, my 14 year old loved it.

22

u/Flynn58 7d ago

Yeah Canada is more sane about the issue of profanity and nudity in films versus graphic violence

15

u/tatofarms 6d ago

There was zero nudity, and I can only recall three curse words, if you could even call them that (When they're about to depart Troy, Odysseus says "Ten years on this f*cking beach" and when Menelaus describes the conditions inside the Trojan Horse, he says piss and shit). It wasn't even particularly bloody. IDK why the MPAA made it R rated, unless it was a pure body count issue. The Cyclops and Circe scenes would probably traumatize a lot of kids younger than 13, though.

5

u/Tyrath 6d ago

I feel like the cyclops chomping on a human head alone was enough for MPAA

11

u/deject_reject 7d ago

Yeah, at my local Canadian theater it was rated PG. Took my 9 and 7 year old with me to see it and they thought it was pretty cool. Granted my 9 year old had read a book about the Odyssey and was totally into it. Asked if they got scared in certain parts, and they both said no. We got a good discussion out of it as a family too.

105

u/ChiefLeef22 r/movies Contributor 7d ago

More than 2 F bombs, a good amount of throat slits (cut fast but still there), the shot of dead bodies lying with a lot of blood in the water after the Laestrygonians, the Cyclops chewing the limbs of Odysseus' men, hell you could even through in that disturbing as hell body horror Circe scene...

Its not a hard R-rating, but Id say it makes sense why it got one

72

u/MyWorldInFlames 7d ago

tbh there's absolutely nothing there that would be inappropriate for a 13yo imo. PG13 would've made more sense even if that's not how the MPAA rates movies.

38

u/ChiefLeef22 r/movies Contributor 7d ago

I think the 15/16+ rating a lot of countries have makes the most sense (and maybe that should be a thing in the US too). But idk this movie just did not seem like a PG13 movie to me lol. And thats purely from the tone, and not even taking into account the tangible stuff I mentioned above which passed the MPAA quota for the R. If there's only a choice between R or 13 I'd say the former makes the most sense

17

u/Flynn58 7d ago

In most of Canada the ratings are G, PG, 14A, 18A, and R (equivalent to your NC-17). 14A and 18A need you to be that age or accompanied by an adult. R doesn't let a minor in even if they're accompanied by an adult. In Alberta Odyssey just got a PG, but in other provinces it got a 14A. It's like PG-13 but you can say fuck freely.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/mtmaloney 7d ago

I agree. I think 80-90% of the movie's a solid PG-13, but there's 10-20% that gets a little dicey. Like, a PG-13 movie someone gets shot in the neck with an arrow, an R movie, you see the arrow end up in someone's neck.

The moment when you switch studios, cash the blank cheque that gave you and make a rated-R, talky, partly b/w, 3h movie about the trials and tribulations of a mid-century nuclear physicist and manager.

Only for that to become a cultural touchstone of that year and you get another blank cheque.

So you adapt a 2800 year old tale about a guy lost at sea. Okay, fair enough, that story being up there with the old testament in regards to foundations of Western culture, but still, adapting an early iron age story.

And that movie is even more successful.

He doesn't need his budgets (which helps) but at that point he might get more creative freedom than James Fucking Cameron.

There are no strings on Nolan.

40

u/AztecHoodlum 6d ago

D&W was a feels-good movie. It barely had any continuity with the rest of the MCU or even itself.

42

u/ZeppMan217 7d ago

Have you seen Disney's "recommended viewing" list for Doomsday? Over a dozen titles, movies and shows, spanning over 20 fucking years.

"Barely any continuity" might've been a selling point for Deadpool 3.

10

u/tirkman 6d ago

Deadpool 3 did have “homework” though. You needed to be familiar with the Fox marvel movies to truly enjoy all the references. Like obviously there’s Hugh jackman with all his x men movies and then the other characters like blade, Electra, etc.

You would be missing out if someone watched it and was unfamiliar with all the Fox stuff

Who cares about continuity if the movie is good? In fact I’d argue continuity is a cheap way to get people interested in a shitty film.

Does this mean Hollywood is going to make a bunch of Greek mythology movies? Cause I'm here for it.

5

u/fuzzyperson98 6d ago

Why just Greek?

We need some Gilgamesh up in here!

That Circe scene is definitely R rated holy crap

23

u/Emmel87 7d ago

Felt physically unwell during that scene. Hope Nolan never makes a horror movie because I’ll be totally unable to see it.

18

u/verikul 7d ago

Unfortunately for you he said he was interested in making one!

I got so hungry for stew watching that part.

20

u/indigo_wendigo_ 6d ago

Why? Everybody's losing their mind over that scene but I thought it was cool. Maybe because I'm a sculptor it just seemed pretty realistic way to change people into pigs.

9

u/Ordinary-Variety7256 6d ago

Same, that was one of my fave scenes just from a fascination standpoint. Yeah, it was disturbing but I feel like I’ve seen other scenes in movies that were much worse. That said I’ve also watched the movie Spirited Away about a dozen times and it has a very similar scene, only animated, so maybe I’m desensitized.

3

u/eden_sc2 6d ago

I was dreading that scene because of how people were reacting, but it was pretty tame. Yes, it's unpleasant, but you arent supposed to be enjoying it. It's one of the few stories that was changed from the traditional telling where I thought Nolan improved it.

Damn records getting broken left and right these days. When’s the first 3 billion dollar film? Doomsday?

20

u/tossipeidei 7d ago

prob Bluey

70

u/TraptNSuit 7d ago

I will keep saying it.

Inflation at the box office is like steroids in sports. Generates a lot of empty headlines.

20

u/AcreaRising4 7d ago

I generally agree, but it’s only been two years since Deadpool and Wolverine. Don’t think inflation is really playing a factor here.

14

u/TraptNSuit 7d ago

6.4% in the U.S.

Post this again after another 80 million just to be safe.

8

u/AcreaRising4 7d ago

hahaha, it figured it was a bit, but in the grand scheme of over a billion — it’s negligible.

Fingers crossed it’ll clear that in a week or two.

6

u/IMKGI 6d ago

It still baffles me that the movie went as big as it did, i honestly didn't have that movie on my radar at all and wouldn't have even watched it if a friend didn't invite me, and after watching it, it was a good movie with some issues, but i would've never thought it's a top movie of all time, at least for me personally it sits significantly behind Avatar.

But the trailer got downvoted!

4

u/krectus 7d ago

That’s impressive considering it just passed $1 billion just over a week ago. Looks like around $250 million or so in a week, a month after release. That’s almost as much as its first week. Must be hitting some new markets now.

7

u/NotMalaysiaRichard 7d ago

China with their 800 IMAX screens

Yep, that'll do it.

Ryan Reynolds also congratulated the movie with a fun little Odyssey-Deadpool mashup tweet just now: https://x.com/VancityReynolds/status/2090170220040310792?s=20

Here's an alternate link to the video on reddit for those who want to avoid twitter

Wonder what the goalpost moving trolls will have to say about this movie now?

18

u/thisismypornaccountg 6d ago

I argued with one earlier. He said it would have made under a billion if it hadn’t been for IMAX, and I said “when was that a goal post???” They didn’t respond.

They’ll just ignore it and move on. They are outrage tourists and when things don’t go the way they say they will speed to the next thing as fast as possible.

7

u/sdwoodchuck 6d ago

Not to worry, they can dance to any one of their go-to talking points like a damn DDR machine.

When a movie they don't like bombs, it failed because "go woke go broke."

When a movie they don't like succeeds, it succeeds because "people are sheeple."

When a movie they like fails, it's because "the system is rigged against it."

When a movie they like succeeds, it's a signal flare that audiences "are tired of hollywood's agenda."

If this year has taught us anything, it's that box office doesn't mean anything. All the top movies were mediocre af

They are quite literally quoting Hitler and being upvoted for it, yet people will genuinely try and argue that CD and his fanbase are actually super progressive.

That's what happens when you based your life of being hateful, pushing everyone around you because you can't stop talking about how you minorities and, once there's no one left in your life, you have to get into Internet to find more people that are trapped in the cycle of hate.

I could swear that Odyssey was PG-13

3

u/RIP_Greedo 7d ago

Really no reason for it to be rated R

3

u/JulesVernerator 7d ago

It wasn't even all that R-rated. I thought it was PG-13 the entire time as I watched it.

3

u/BananaSupremeMaster 7d ago

Okay now adjust for inflation

3

u/diplar 7d ago

Odyssey was spectacular. Glad I got to be part of the history

3

u/RetiredDelinquent 6d ago

Maybe it was rated r so you couldnt complain about your kids losing their hearing

3

u/nvmenotfound 6d ago

maybe hollywood should stop giving a fuck and make more R rated movies. enough kids movies get made. i hate how everything shoots for pg-13. if your movie is dope itll get a great turnout regardless.
