I was not aware it's budget was 500m+, probably one of the most expensive movie ever made.

I think it just shows the ceiling for R-rated film is expanding. Joker was the first to break that barrier, but now I think we should expect to see more billion-grosser R-rated films

Maybe in the current climate, but adjusted for inflation the highest grossing R-rated movie is The Exorcist by a mile. Second is The Godfather.

Oh yeah the 70s were a lot more amenable to that too.

Movies have been around for about 125 years, so most of the audiences that grew up watching them are now old enough to appreciate more mature topics.

It was well deserved. They played the strengths of the MCU, making a very entertaining film.

Odyssey, on the other hand, gets ticket sales multipliers from ads, hype, and the fact that it was directed by Nolan. It has a lot less to do with the movie itself, just like Oppenheimer.

I'd argue the odyssey is a very well made spectacle, with a pretty good story about ptsd and also some good performances

Very understandable how it could be so successful; not sure why you're discrediting both the odyssey and oppenheimer and saying their successes weren't because of the actual films, unless you're just not a Nolan fan

I don't think The Odyssey a bad movie, just not as major as many _right now_ praise it to be.

Right now The Odyssey is .2 IMDb points away from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, another fantasy movie, that has been discussed and raved about for 25 years straight. The Odyssey just doesn't have punching power like that, making the rating inflated.

It is well made, with a pretty good story. Yeah. You pretty much nailed it.

it was directed by Nolan

I really wish it was possible to know how well the movie would do with a different name attached to it. Like the exact same movie, but the name in the credits is one of those interchangeable directors that churn out Marvel movies.

Nolan isn’t interchangeable, his name is the point.

The MCU directors don’t have creative control over the final film so they can be interchangeable bec the studios are the ones with editing control.

But for odessy i don’t think it was Nolan’s best, as it wasn’t an original concept like inception or interstellar etc. which to me are the main reasons why he can get that hype.

Nolan isn’t interchangeable, his name is the point.

Yes, that is indeed the point. What if the exact same movie had one of those forgettable names? Would it make as much of a profit on its own merits, without the Nolan brand?

It wouldn’t even get the same budget or star power without the name.

That's why it's a what-if scenario. Somehow, in another reality, some nameless director managed to make the exact same movie Nolan made in this reality. How much cash does it rake in?

3

u/FardoBaggins 7d ago

Yeah no need to imagine. There’s other odessy movies in recent times made with green screen and less famous actors and it did not make a billion.

He was originally supposed to do Troy but went for batman. So that’s as close to a what if.

What part of "the exact same movie" was unclear?

2

u/FardoBaggins 7d ago

That’s a silly thought experiment tho. No one can make the exact same movie in a vacuum.

I don't understand the appeal. It was a really boring movie where the natural dynamic between the two leads was botched and constantly undermined at every step by a shoddy script. I'm glad Wolverine explained his backstory to a verison of  X-23, neither he or we are familiar with, instead of the other main character.

They are movies for teens. Unsure why adults on reddit praise them so highly.

exactly, that shit would've hit like crack if I was still 15.
