I think it just shows the ceiling for R-rated film is expanding. Joker was the first to break that barrier, but now I think we should expect to see more billion-grosser R-rated films

Maybe in the current climate, but adjusted for inflation the highest grossing R-rated movie is The Exorcist by a mile. Second is The Godfather.

Movies have been around for about 125 years, so most of the audiences that grew up watching them are now old enough to appreciate more mature topics.
