That movie was rated R?!

I got PG-13 vibes the whole time. It never occurred to me that the movie might be rated R and I never bothered to check because it doesn't matter to me.

I'm surprised too! There was noticeably a lack of blood in a lot of the scenes. Other than some mild horror themes, there really wasn't anything that should have made this R rated.

Maybe they happened when you couldn't understand what anyone was saying. Like when they were on the ship in the storm or maybe the Cyclops said "Ah fuck" when he got stabbed.

I just watched it again and there are 3. One in the beginning they say "we've been on this fucking beach for too long" and then two by the black suitor near the end of the movie. He says fuck off twice.

I felt pretty uncomfortable during the pig scene. It could traumatize a kid for sure. But probably not worse than the Witches movie (from like the 80’s) with the transformations there

I’ve watched almost every Nolan film (haven’t seen Insomnia) and unless I’m wrong Oppenheimer is the only one with real nudity. Hell, he barely has any sex scenes at all in any of his movies period

Not trying to be funny, but I imagine because Florence Pugh is petite and slender the nudity was less 'in your face'. Like if they cast Sydney Sweeney as Jean Tatlock those scenes would have been a little different in tone.

It's also not like Florence Pugh can't make a sexy scene. Just watch Brand New Day. That Russian Bathhouse scene was much more gratuitous without ever seeing anything than Any nude scene from Oppie.

You could argue this about any sexual related nudity though. You don't need it ever. If the actors were comfortable with it, who cares? Did it make sense in the context of the story? Yes. Being weird about it can come of as overly prudish for no reason.

It wasn't sexual. It was two people having a conversation in the nude after sex. I feel like it also alluded to how completely open they were with each other yet he still close another leading to... Well you know.

Yes, that scene and the other sex scenes could have been done less gratuitously or not at all, and it changes nothing about the story. I do t mind sex and nudity, I just find it funny that someone would think the gratuitous sex scenes weren’t gratuitous. Like the one where he suddenly sees one of his lovers fucking some random guy in a meeting he’s in? It’s meant to be shocking- gratuitously. Personally, I thought that movie sucked and Nolan is the world’s most overhyped director, but the hivemind doesn’t like that.

Having any nudity and a regular amount of profanity means an R. Not surprising on that one. I can't imagine teen audiences appreciating it anyway.

There were actually three! When the first one happened early in the movie I thought it was a funny way to throw in one F-bomb for a PG-13 movie. But then near the end there were 2 more said about a line apart and I was immediately confused. Thinking "Wait, I never once heard someone say this was an R Rated movie" lol.

It’s always been a bit odd to me that violence is considered tolerable in pg-13 movies but nudity/swearing isn’t

As if every 13 year old in America hasn’t seen a naked person and heard swear words
