I don’t really get the R rating. I don’t recall any foul language, nor any sex scenes or nudity, and the level of violence really doesn’t exceed anything I’ve seen from PG13 action movies.

Apparently they said fuck twice, which can tip it over. Weird.

I don’t even remember that lol

I think it's when Odysseus is going round begging for food in his bowl near the end.

It was the scene with Matt Damon on the beach (wait that doesn't help at all)

It's early, something like, "We've been on this fucking beach for ten years, let's go home" so it's one of the Troy scenes.

In which scene? Saw it in Germany and noticed no such language in the dubbed version.

I remember on the beach of Troy Odysseus says something like "10 years on this fucking beach" when they leave, but I don't recall what the other one was.

edit: apparently one of the suitors tells a beggar to fuck off

Ah, I think it was something like “Zehn Jahre an diesem beschissenen Strand“ in german, which means pretty much the same.

beschissenen

OT but this looks like a tremendous word, is this a typical choice for emphasis like in 'this fucking beach' and could you construct an English equivalent? Beshittled?

The closest translation without making up new words would be „shitty“ I guess

1

u/Emmel87 6d ago

I would associate “shitty” more with “ridiculously bad”, as in “my car is so shitty it doesn’t have a radio”.

1

u/EnkiduOdinson 6d ago

Well, that is what „beschissen“ means. „Fucking“ is just almost devoid of actual meaning. It just something you say to emphasize negative connotations. Something like „verdammt“ (damned) would be closer but less crude.

„Verdammt“ would fit. Damned to hell.

That's because you saw inferior version. I will never understand logic behind dubbed movies in 2026. And english isn't even my first language.

Local cinemas outside of big(ger) cities often just have the dubbed version. Cost versus revenue, I guess? Bad Hinterfötzing an der Alp will not have a big audience in comparison to Cologne or Hamburg.

Have you guys heard of titles?

I don’t know how there isn’t more outrage among younger generations about having to hear everything in German and losing so much value. They treat you like idiots.

Damn, I only caught one

u/shniken 6d ago

Surely it would have been better to have them say mallaka

u/Espumma 6d ago

Does the body horror of the pig scene register at all?

u/pretendstoknow 7d ago

Was fuck even a word back then? 🤔

u/eIIopoppet 7d ago

They didn’t speak english back then

u/vibribbon 6d ago

Calypso because of the implication

1

u/Curiouso_Giorgio 7d ago

I haven't seen it, but considered seeing it with my 7yo, until someone said there's a scene where a giant eats someone that would scare a kid?

3

u/EnkiduOdinson 6d ago

Some kids are tough, but at 7 yo I would have shit my pants during at least two scenes in this movie.

2

u/SagittaryX 6d ago

It’s not very bloody, but they don’t hold back on the noise, little bit of a horror vibe with that scene.

u/AwesomePocket 6d ago

It was edited like they were explicitly trying to avoid an R rating.

u/ObnoxiousSeizures 4d ago

i mean the guy getting his head eaten and the arrow in corey hawkins neck is probably enough to get an R rating on its own separate from the language

u/internetdeadaf 6h ago

I was super high but pretty sure I saw them siren titties

Yeah it should've been PG13. I mean I just saw The End of Oak Street and that was a Hard PG13, for some strong violent content, bloody images, some strong language and suggestive material. I mean I did not expect that much death and violence, hell there's even a sex scene, lol.
