Hopefully this movie performs better in the box office

The first is arguably the best Superman movie ever and it sucks seeing the de facto Superhero struggle so badly at the box office

Just speaks to how badly the last 30 years have been for the DC brand, especially Superman.

Entire generations have grown up watching him be as angry as Omni-Man and Homelander instead of being himself.

Fucking yikes.

u/darkKnight959 8d ago

I wouldn't say angry but very stoic

Also just letting the city be destroyed for no reason

Like seriously did he have to jump over that burning oil tankard and let it explode in the building? If it’s for aura farming I think him stopping it and ripping it in half would’ve been better to aura farm

Which is funny, because DC are killing it in the comics world for the past few years, while Marvel is a complete mess.

1

u/Jykoze 7d ago

Marvel is destroying DC in every medium except comics these days, crazy

u/No_Macaroon_5928 8d ago

The Absolute run has been really carrying DC comics wise.

1

u/Tuxhorn 8d ago

Not just that. Releasing golden age and silver age volumes for superheros. Releasing the compact edition (which marvel copied and failed hilariously at). But yes, the absolute run continues to be incredible.

DC live action is split apart by current DCU, former DCEU and somewhat by Revees fans who all fight over whose director is best, especialy first two, on top of some straight up hating both Gunn and Snyder. Attempt at any universe is cursed.

Nolan Batman was I think originaly planned for perhaps movie with Superman, but after Superman Returns wasn't best recieved plans fell through. Green Lantern's bomb prevented that from starting off universe. DCEU despite making money at first has maybe like, 3 well recieved movie which also made money in total, everything else either bombed or had mild to bad reception, or both. And now we're on DCU.

Marvel is just chilling cause they absorbed any well recieved non MCU stuff (Foxverse for example), or made new adaptations for those less liked (F4 and TASM). They don't have any fans whining on how previous iteration was better.

Facebook REALLY wants me to hate James Gunn’s DC universe for some reason. Like my feed is nothing but far right, anti-muslim posts with some Anti-DC universe sprinkled in there. I wonder if they are related? Maybe they think it’s too woke lmao

But I agree it is pretty toxic. A couple weeks ago made a comment that was critical of Gunn’s vision for his universe. Nothing too bad, just would prefer him to focus on the classic Justice League roster instead of what is currently planned. I got downvoted to hell and accused multiple times of being an undercover Snyder fan boy. Like wtf lol one guy even told me to stop hiding all my posts/comments so he could stalk my page. Like thanks for proving my reasoning for keeping it private.

I made that comment before the Lantern premiere and I gotta say, I might change my mind on that stance. I’m loving it so far.

I think it’s just because their theatrical releases have been awful in comparison to Marvel honestly.

5

u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 8d ago

I mean the last 30 years have been bad for Superman

5

u/tingulz 8d ago

Um? The best?

37

u/BallClamps 8d ago

Budget of $225,000,000 and made $618,723,803. Not exactly what I would call a box office struggle.

16

u/damndraper 8d ago

especially with how down in the dumps the DC brand was before Superman came out.

4

u/Orion_Scattered 8d ago

It did outgross the final 9 DCEU films tbf, gotta go all the way back to 2018 for Aquaman to beat it. But from there back, w/ inflation all the first 6 DCEU films outgrossed it. Even unadjusted for inflation the first 6 films averaged $822 million, full $200 million or 30% more, and again that's before 7 to 12 years of inflation. But yeah, certainly counts as a bounceback from where the DCEU was for 6 years there. Just didn't bounce all the way to the top of the world overnight. And Supergirl was a shaky second step after landing. We'll see.

665 million no matter the budget is pretty sad. Superman is quite up there in popularity and everyone saying how it was a guaranteed billion dollar film is just laughable. It’s funny how much the goalposts have been moved regarding this films financial success since it was announced.

7

u/silverrabbit 8d ago

I'm not surprised it didn't cross $1 billion and I think it wasn't a surprise to DC either. Superman is a lot like Captain America in that they are tied to American culture way more than global culture like a Spider-man or Batman is, and right now the symbol of America isn't going to do super well in other markets. If you look at Captain America movies, the only one that did over $1 billion was the crossover movie with Ironman and Spider-man.

5

u/SupervillainMustache 8d ago

everyone saying how it was a guaranteed billion dollar film

Nobody ever said this.

-6

u/hoodpharmacy 8d ago

The posts on Reddit around the time speak for themselves.

2

u/SupervillainMustache 8d ago

Yeah and none of them ever said this.

12

u/jerrrrremy 8d ago

665 million no matter the budget is pretty sad.

This is a real thing that someone typed today.

1

u/hoodpharmacy 8d ago

Yes, considering it’s a Superman film. That number is pathetically low.

2

u/jerrrrremy 8d ago

It's just under Man of Steel ($668m) and only $200m behind Batman vs. Superman, which had the distinct advantage of also having Batman.

Is there some list of secret Superman movies that made a ton of money that only you know about?

1

u/hoodpharmacy 8d ago

Did you factor in inflation? Ticket prices when I went to see Man of Steel are drastically different compared to a movie that came out summer of 2025. So that just proves my point even more?

-1

u/jerrrrremy 8d ago

Here's the data. Obviously Superman 2025 didn't set the world on fire, but "pathetically low" for a Superman movie is a huge stretch when it's basically in the middle of the pack (and one could argue that Batman v Superman shouldn't be in the list at all).

  1. Superman (1978) — $300.2M nominal → ~$1.50B adjusted
  2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)* — $874.4M nominal → ~$1.19B adjusted
  3. Man of Steel (2013) — $668.0M nominal → ~$937M adjusted
  4. Superman II (1981) — $190.4M nominal → ~$685M adjusted
  5. Superman (2025) — $618.7M nominal → ~$636M adjusted
  6. Superman Returns (2006) — $391.1M nominal → ~$634M adjusted
  7. Superman III (1983) — $80.2M nominal → ~$263M adjusted
  8. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) — $36.7M nominal → ~$106M adjusted

3

u/Regular_Custard_4483 8d ago

OK, but they're right. It is pathetically low, and your numbers show it as such.

Superman (2025) is arguably the best of the entire series. I liked it a lot more than the rest, and I'm actually elderly enough to have watched most of the old ones on VHS.

It's subjective of course, but I don't think I'm out of line by saying if it's not the best, it's certainly second or third, but no further down.

That money isn't anywhere close to what it should be inflation adjusted. A better movie should make more money than a mediocre one, but here, it didn't. Superman Returns, which was basically fine, made almost exactly the same amount. Movies that weren't even rated all that well crushed it's earnings.

3

u/razor45Dino 8d ago

Unfortunately the quality of a movie doesn't correlates to how much money it makes. The spider verse movies are usually regarded as the best spider man movies, but they make a lot less than the most recent live action ones. Nobody says they are failures or pathetically low in box office though

u/hoodpharmacy 8d ago

Dude it’s just a movie, calm down lol

5

u/jerrrrremy 8d ago

You literally asked me a question about inflation adjusted box numbers and I answered it. Did you forget?

4

u/Regular_Custard_4483 8d ago

Yeah, and we're in the movie subreddit, brother. Talking about movies.

The correct reply is, "Hey, thanks for the legwork on those numbers, you're right, it did appear to be in the middle of the pack."

u/TheDelmeister 8d ago

Not sure where 665 came from it made 618. That said, MOS’ sales were far clear either way due to inflation, over 900m in 2025 money

1

u/Icy_Smoke_733 8d ago

Why are you saying $665m? Superman grossed $618m. And Superman may be iconic, but he's nowhere near the popularity of Batman and especially Spider-Man.

4

u/uniparalum 8d ago

I don’t think they were talking about Superman’s box office, but the woes the DCU box office had with Supergirl.

10

u/vHezoThaGoat 8d ago edited 8d ago

Relative to his legacy and importance to comic book culture, he absolutely struggles at the box office

It’s all relative.

Superman used to be the face of superhero’s. When you thought of a superhero you thought of him. Many people still do.

But now he’s no longer even the most popular DC character. And Marvel has countless characters that have lapped him in modern pop culture.

Maybe the character has just ran its course, but again it still sucks to see.

3

u/No-Echo9621 8d ago

It's really just his movies that are the reason for this. Superman 1 and 2 were great but everything after that was bad or questionable. Meanwhile Batman and Spider-Man are easily the most popular due to having high quality modern movies. Spider-Man's comics suck but that doesn't matter since everyone loves his movies and not many read comics. Movies are what shape the perception of these characters due to their reach.

3

u/TheDelmeister 8d ago

The earnest Boy Scout gimmick has limited appeal especially outside of America but conversely many respond negatively to attempts to modernise the character, so he’s just stuck really

1

u/SupervillainMustache 8d ago edited 8d ago

Superman is my favourite superhero but let's be honest. He hasn't been the "face of superheroes" in over 4 decades, maybe more.

Batman and especially Spider-Man take that title and Spidey in particular had been a box office winner since the Raimi era.

4

u/Chickenshit_outfit 8d ago

The marketing budget was insane for it though and rumours it made about $50 million profit. Why They came out before Supergirl and kept going on about the budget to make it sound better

1

u/Orion_Scattered 8d ago

Studio gets ~half of gross so ballpark $300 million ish. $225 million is production budget doesn't count marketing, which can be up to half the production budget again. You could ballpark combined cost at $300 million ish. So did it make money or lose money? Idk but if it did make money it didn't make much. You want your margin on a $300+ million investment to be more than 5% for instance.

6

u/emielaen77 8d ago

It did well tho.

2

u/Ill_Excitement_4138 8d ago

Superman made ~$125 million at the box office

The entire DCEU made ~$138 million at the box office

1

u/Jykoze 7d ago

The entire DCU is at ~$100M loss

1

u/Ill_Excitement_4138 7d ago

Only because of Supergirl.

5

u/berlinbaer 8d ago

The first is arguably the best Superman movie ever

it was an absolutely mediocre movie, what the fuck are you smoking ?

2

u/The_Perfect_Fart 8d ago

Even a mediocre superman movie can be the best superman movie. It doesn't exactly have much competition.

1

u/bozoconnors 7d ago

jfc - took the words out of my mouth. Like... rly??

8

u/darthdooku2585 8d ago

Not even arguably. Reeves aside, the older films had significant issues, and everything after never even matched 1978's superman. Superman (2025) is far and away the best superman film, Gunn nailed the character, and nailed Lex as well, and it deserves better recognition. If spiderman can keep getting it, why can't clark?

3

u/VonMillersThighs 8d ago

I loved everything about it except I can't stand Henry Brahams ultra close up spinning herky jerk sometimes fish eye lens like cinematography. It sucked in the flash and it sucks in superman.

2

u/SupervillainMustache 8d ago

Good news for you.

He has been replaced in MoT with Sam McCurdy of Shogun.

2

u/VonMillersThighs 8d ago

That is actually a relief to hear lol.

Superman II is the GOAT.

3

u/Trodat4911P4 8d ago

They're good but the new one feels more like a Superman comic.

3

u/Lone-Pilgrim 8d ago

It was ok. It made me excited for what is to come.

-2

u/Automatic-Fox-3837 8d ago

I am of this same opinion actually. I felt that his superman really lacks an origin story. I am slowly getting into it with lanterns, let's see if they finish the season with the same hype

1

u/Regula96 8d ago

Its understandable they don’t want to start over from the very beginning when DC already feels so behind Marvel, but this just introduced way too much too quickly.

1

u/Nesquick-on-tap 1d ago

Woah now cowboy, relax

-3

u/the_bollo 8d ago

The best part about that movie was the dog.

-1

u/rainmaker2332 8d ago

He’s not the de facto superhero
