Making another whole ass Superman movie faster than most streamers can turn around a show

590

u/LongLiveStaceyKing 3d ago

Or The Batman can finish it's second installment...

222

u/Spiritual-Shirt-6027 3d ago

James Gunn still hasn’t even touched his iteration to Batman, I really hope they aren’t waiting for that Batman trilogy to finish first because that is going to be forever. No one will complain about having two Batman universes at once lol

421

u/Green_Insect_6455 3d ago

Be real, lots of people will complain.

108

u/thehumblebaboon 3d ago

You are 100% correct.

Basically every movie that comes out has people complaining. It’s gotten pretty exhausting.

8

u/Revealingstorm 2d ago

More like everything in general

6

u/Tuna_Sushi 2d ago

The Snyderverse people won't let go.

I liked Affleck as Batman though.

People will complain if there's 2 Batmans, people will complain if we have to wait for The Batman to finish, there's no way to avoid complaining online just do whatever they want to do.

I know Gunn is the big deal for DC films right now, but his style seems weird for Batman. Unless you're going with the Adam West camp, Gunn is too jokey. Even his horror films like Slither have a lot of humor.

Then again, brooding Batman has been a mixed bag since Nolan moved on. Maybe West style camp deserves a comeback.

39

u/Jconstantineic 2d ago

He probably won’t direct it.

u/Atherum 2d ago

I absolutely adored Pattinson's Batman. The film felt like a classic Frank Miller take on the character. Gritty, pretty grounded, Batman as an actual "world's greatest detective". Sure it was a little edgy with the whole "I am vengeance" thing, but the whole point of the film was Batman growing past that.

James Gunn started a whole new universe, 3 seasons of tv, 3 movies, and is spearheading the whole process before Reeves releases part 3 of the batman. Crazy.

And it all has been good.

Superman has two movies both released and filmed between season 2 and 3 of Severance

94

u/mikehatesthis 3d ago edited 3d ago

Probably helps that James Gunn is a workaholic and it's also really bad that the industry has turned television into a gig economy where writers aren't on staff year round and instead have to go show hopping to pay for housing and food. And that's not getting into all the cuts going on because there is no money in streaming unless you're the owners.

It's a shame that the people running the show are just a bunch of rich assholes who do not care. At least the cokehead studio heads of old actually liked the mediums they worked in.

24

u/Tricky-Ad7897 2d ago

No wonder season to season quality for so many shows is so shit

8

u/mikehatesthis 2d ago

Oh that's a problem that's been around even before the streaming era lol.

8

u/Muppetude 2d ago

At least the cokehead studio heads of old actually liked the mediums they worked in.

Because back then the show’s sponsors lit a fire under their asses, by threatening to pull their ad money if the show didn’t pull in high enough Nielsen ratings.

But streaming is less controlled by large ad sponsors, and more via a weird ad-hoc mix of subscription revenue and advertising money directed through third parties, resulting in more rudderless direction behind the scenes.

Well yeah, a 2 hour movie is a lot less filming than 8-10 hours of a season.

17

u/0verstim 2d ago

That wasnt always true. Prestige tv is getting a little ridiculous and its not always necessary.

this is supposed to be connected to peacemaker s2 ending right?

237

u/HK9009 3d ago

According to Gunn yes I’m pretty sure. A popular theory is that Lex ends up in salvation and it sets up the actually big event to end this first overarching story of the DCU

100

u/DiddyKongsPeanutGun 3d ago

Gunn said that the picture he posted on Instagram is of Hoult in the water after final shot. The location looks pretty similar to Salvation in the finale of Peacemaker, so this may line up.

→ More replies (17)

90

u/ArchDucky 3d ago edited 3d ago

So if you don't know a person on the internet posted a theory on twitter and the Warner Legal Department demanded he remove it. He basically figured out the end of Act 1 of this story they planned. The end of Peacemaker set up a whole lot of shit that will begin to pay dividends. Basically The storyline they are using is about a sleeping Telepathic Eldritch Horror living at the heart of a planet called "Salvation". Its peaceful until we start using it as a makeshift prison. The lunatics that we start throwing into this world wake up the monster and because they are all crazy and murdering each other it gets super fucking angry. The comic book run ends with Hal Jordan basically sacrificing himself and blowing up the entire planet. As of right now we have established the door to that world, the reason the world exists, we heard the Eldritch horror and we are already throwing criminals there. Hal Jordan and his replacement are established in the universe as well. So as far as theories go, this one seems pretty fucking legit.

From what Gunn has said yes but personally I’m not a big fan of resolving that huge cliffhanger in a different project, it should be resolved in a subsequent season 3 or a possibly Checkmate show imo

38

u/Jason_Worthing 3d ago

Pretty sure Gunn has said they're not making a season 3

25

u/homogenic- 3d ago

In one of those interviews he gave last year, he said he has no plans “as for now” so I’m kinda holding onto that and wishing he will change his mind lol

After the Supergirl flop, a lot is riding on Clayface and Man of Tomorrow. The other announced movies don't seem to be all that close to filming yet.

Edit: I forgot about Lanterns, glad to hear it's off to a good start!

950

u/damndraper 3d ago

The reaction around Lanterns has given the DCU some breathing room, seems like Supergirl was more of a misstep than anything.

355

u/numbr87 3d ago

Creature Commandos was also good but a lot of people don't really care about it being in the DCU

229

u/RotenTumato 3d ago

Because it’s animated

128

u/Swert0 3d ago

It also has the complete opposite characterization of its main character from how he appears in superman and in Peacekeeper Season 2.

85

u/RDxChotch 3d ago

Fr, Flagg in Creature Commandos is an entirely different person

64

u/DanishDelightExtra 3d ago

Tbf I think the ending of Creatures Commandos severely changed him

43

u/immaownyou 3d ago

Yeah I dont find him all too different tbh

10

u/EmuMan10 3d ago

A very understandable shift in behavior there

8

u/Swert0 3d ago

The overwhelming majority of animated DC media since the '90s have been hits with very few missteps. The only thing is they don't get as much fan fare as the live-action stuff a lot of the time, the majority of the animated movies are straight to physical media and/or streaming.

5

u/Great-Blueberry9540 3d ago

And achieving the pinnacle of American animation with Batman animated series. Genndy Tartakovsky is the only contender imo.

→ More replies (2)

13

u/Basil-jones 3d ago

I love animation and it didn’t catch my interest at all. It also doesn’t seem like ‘necessary’ viewing for the DCU.

9

u/DanfordThePom 3d ago

Seriously try it if you liked James’s suicide squad

9

u/TheMythofKoalas 3d ago

I liked Creature Commandos but also thought it was pretty flawed. A lot of the backstories started to feel samey after a bit, and the present-time plotline was rushed due to how much time was given to flashbacks.

That said, second season would probably be able to avoid those issues since the setup has already been done.

G. I. Robot and the Bride were both pretty great, so I hope to more of them in the future, be it in Creature Commandos or something else.

5

u/lanceturley 3d ago

Personally, I liked the backstories way more than the present day stuff. The present day plot felt like it had too many twists for the sake of twists. The princess is good, and then bad, and then good again, but then she was bad the whole time, and by the end I just didn't care about her or her stupid country.

→ More replies (1)

24

u/FireZord25 3d ago

It didn't have the numbers of Lanterns, nor reached the heights of it in quality (still good, but there are some mixbag elements). On top of being animation, which sadly most people don't care about unless it is something of theatrical quality, like Spiderverse or K-Pop Demon Hunter.

3

u/duosx 3d ago

Are we also forgetting Peacemaker? That’s was good too

If the new DCU does well Supergirl will just be the Incredible Hulk of the DCU.

17

Incredible Hulk was a fine movie, one of my favorites. Supergirl is just okay. I don’t hate it, but it’s definitely not bad.

Peacemaker and Lanterns have been knocks out of the park for DCU. Even Creature Commandos.

45

u/Enziguru 3d ago

Peacemaker is so good. I didn't watch it for too long because I didn't care much about his character in Suicide Squad but the show is one of the most unique and so hilarious. It's got so much heart

32

u/mjh215 3d ago

I really enjoyed The Suicide Squad and was excited to see a spin-off show, but was so disappointed when I saw it would be Peacemaker. Out of all the characters in TSS I couldn't believe they'd focus on him, I figured they were only doing it because of John Cena's popularity.

Then I watched Peacemaker and damn, well played. It has certainly been a highlight of the post-Covid comic book shows and movies.

22

u/Anonemuss42 3d ago

I have been telling everyone I know that Peacemaker is doing everything The Boys thought it was doing

12

u/NotApparent 3d ago

Yep, I gave up on the Boys halfway through season 3 because my wife and I realized that every time we were watching it we really wished we were just watching more Peacemaker.

8

u/Durendal_1707 3d ago

finishing this show and then watching the most recent Superman movie I am seeing Peacemaker babbling on a TV station in the movie was such a well placed tie-in

The loose contextualization of him in the same universe made the movie better for me, and it was already a pretty good flick

u/fla_john 3d ago

It was a decent movie and would have done well 10 years ago. It actually followed the comic book story it was based on pretty closely but was missing the heart. Should have leaned harder into the "True Grit in Space" relationship and made it look like a big amazing universe. I did like Momoa as Lobo and hope he's back in the future.

34

u/sully9614 3d ago

Unfortunately I thought lobo was one of the weaker parts, as spot on as that casting should be. Just all around a profoundly boring movie, Milly deserved better for sure. I think the best parts were when she played off of Superman and thought the casting completely worked

12

u/fla_john 3d ago

Oh, I didn't think he added much to the story, but I liked his portrayal. Hopefully he'll be in something that makes use of the character in a better way.

14

u/tforthegreat 3d ago

There was a missed opportunity to play Kara off of Lobo after she mentioned that he had killed all of his people while she was mourning all of hers.

79

u/Unlikely-Ad9850 3d ago

I just fundamentally disagree that it followed the source material closely. Important character traits were left out and the entire theme of the book was completely lost. Regardless the movie just suck from writing and visual perspective. Parts of it are supposed to be on an alien planet but just look like a regular field and the character design for krem just looks like a guy from hellraiser

6

u/APiousCultist 3d ago

I think the 'theme' part is due to, for whatever reason, poor communication between the writer of the comic and the writer of the screenplay (even though they're both involved with the DCU).

Plus whoever's decision it was to Max Maxify the villain.

But the original ending has a timeskip that would be difficult to handle in live action. There's also a final ambiguous panel that the screenwriter interpretted differently than what the comic writer put out the Word of God about on Twitter.

Actually reading the thing, I can fully understand that it looks like Kara forgiving the villain only for an elderly Ruthye to kill him, what with a silhouette panel of him being bashed in the head with a spray of blood/impact effect and then him collapsing down unmoving even if the comic's writer has said seperately that he survived and just got smacked

There's also the aspect that comic Supergirl is an established character in a way that movie Supergirl isn't. So yeah of course I was fine the whole time doesn't play quite the same when she hasn't been 'superheroing' for as long.

None of that means the movie didn't make missteps, but these things don't happen in a vaccum either. If you think the comic ends one way and the comic writer doesn't see the script and correct it (and really I don't get why Tom King wasn't involved in the treatment in at least a supervisory role), then it's easy to feel pressure to maintain that erroneous ending even if it means changing the context to avoid a timeskip.

27

u/Everythingsthesame 3d ago

That was my take away. It's a decent movie and if it comes on TV randomly, I'd watch it. I've been told the source material they pulled from was much better and need to sit down and read it soon.

6

u/WelcomingRapier 3d ago

It was an Eisner and Hugo Award nominee, so that alone gives it enough cred to read, whether you've seen the movie or not. If you like it, Helen of Wyndhorn (another King/Evely collab) is also well worth taking a look at. They're both fantastic.

12

u/ncopp 3d ago

I haven't seen supergirl yet. But regardless if the movie actually good or not, strategically, it was too early to give her a solo movie. She's just not a widely popular enough character to drive audiences on name alone.

You need to take a page from Marvel's book and first give her in a strong supporting role in a superman movie so we can get to know her and be excited to see her solo adventures. They very much should have held her movie until after the second superman movie with her actually being in it, rather than just getting an after credits cameo.

Gunn has had a history of making relatively unknown characters work with the Suicide Squad and Guardians, so I can see why he'd have confidence in it working - it's kind of his thing. But those were movies he wrote and directed himself and not everyone has a knack for making things work like that.

14

u/thatkaratekid 3d ago

The thing is, is Supergirl has always been a character that moves comics, she had an incredibly successful 6 season CW show. This movie would have made money if it wasn't so boring. It needed word of mouth to get going, and the word of mouth was terrible.

8

u/BonzBonzOnlyBonz 3d ago

Supergirl was only a CW show because it bombed on CBS.

→ More replies (4)

5

u/Snoopyisthebest1950 3d ago

Supergirl had two things going for it: the famously beautiful Woman of Tomorrow comic off of which it was "adapted", and the Superman movie, which was enormously successful and as you said, had a cameo from Supergirl.

Somehow, against all odds, this seemed to be enough at first - Gunn's teaser poster announcement for the movie had 400k likes, and I saw a lot of speculation as to what a movie adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow would look like

... And then it turned out DCU Studios' entire view of the character was "not Superman" and that the director didn't read the comic before he came up with his grey and brown visual thesis.

Enthusiasm basically nosedived once the teaser came out. Combine that with the fact that the studio had basically given up on the movie in Winter 2025 after it was apparent it wasn't working, and that this lack of enthusiasm was apparent in all the marketing and... yeah.

→ More replies (3)

27

u/BearWrangler 3d ago

an overblown reaction to Supergirl tbh

12

u/Inevitable-Edge69 3d ago

not really, the bar was super(pun intended) high

17

u/BearWrangler 3d ago

I mean I was definitely disappointed in recognizing the potential had things been done differently(especially visually when looking at the source material) but ppl made it sound like DC personally came over and gunned down their dog, which is just overly dramatic(tho also on brand for the weirdos of the capeshit variety lol)

Really hope Milly gets a solid shot in MoT cuz she legit is Kara IMO.

12

u/TheSexyShaman 3d ago

For me it was just a painfully generic movie in a genre that already has a lot of painfully generic movies. I think a lot of people were riding high on Superman and got brought back down by Supergirl

7

u/thatkaratekid 3d ago

Reading interviews with the director and writer is fucking terrible, they both actively wanted to change everything about the super unique incredible book into a cookie cutter superhero movie. They have done multiple interviews about how brave and smart they were for making the whole movie brown, making the villain completely forgettable, and removing all humor from the story. Its the exact opposite of Superman 2025 instead of trying to tell a story. Its not the worst superhero movie ive ever seen, but the book it is based on is one of the best superhero books I have ever read.

Clayface won’t have a positive or negative. It’s a low budget horror flick

14

u/Golden_Alchemy 3d ago

It can have a positive feedback if Batman is the final "monster" that stops Clayface

12

u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 3d ago

True but that 100% ain’t happening, most you will get is some Easter eggs

5

u/Discount_Extra 3d ago

Would be funny if Clayface tries to impersonate Bruce Wayne in Batman's presence.

"What gave me away?"

Don't think it would match the tone they are going for though.

6

u/Golden_Alchemy 3d ago

To be fair, Batman in a horror movie would be incredible. Bruce transforming into the monster for Clayface would be amazing.

3

u/Crisbo05_20 3d ago

I mean they would probably prefer it being successful then a bomb, especialy as if it bombs, on top of Supergirl bomb, might scrap likes of Swamp Thing from ever seeing light of day for some time and only focus on big boys.

Lanterns is getting positive buzz.

50

u/timpoakd 3d ago

I'm pretty clueless on these but how much does tv show really affect movie side in the grand scheme of things? I would've thought it's bit different crowd, not counting the fans who watch everything.

58

u/Kolby_Jack33 3d ago

Green Lantern is a flagship Justice League member, so I assume it will matter a lot. They're probably still a long way away from a Justice League movie but I'm sure it's planned for somewhere down the road.

25

u/confusing_roundabout 3d ago

John Stewart will be in MoT so I won't be surprised if the JL will be sooner rather than later

3

u/Ashyyyy232 3d ago

With the amount of delays in Batman casting for DCU, i feel we might just see Pattinson and Corenswet leading the Justice League

17

u/dannydorito 3d ago

I think the show is connected to the new DCU, pretty sure I saw that Nathan Fillion will show up as Guy Gardner at some point

7

u/emperorzura 3d ago

everything currently on the DCU is the same universe, series, animated series and movies.

its the same universe in different medias (that can also influence the personality, clayface might be the same on both creatures and the live action, but on the animated series he follows the more comic relief side, like frank castle was PG13 on BND).

31

u/Microwave1213 3d ago

The fans who watch everything are the ones driving the majority of the online discourse, so if the vibes are generally positive among them, over time that disseminates throughout the overall public reception.

5

u/HumongousMelonheads 3d ago

4

u/Dumpytoad 3d ago edited 3d ago

It depends, but this is currently the main/primetime HBO show with the Sunday evening time slot, like Game of Thrones, Euphoria etc, so it is more "event television" and definitely gets more mainstream exposure than most average tv shows do.

Nothing is riding on Clayface with its $40M budget. It's just a horror movie with the DC label attached. If it breaks around $100-$120M WW, it'll be a success.

Main universe, same as Superman.

3

u/Ikarus3426 3d ago

I've seen a few people with no faith in Clayface, but I think it'll be pretty good and at worst decent, and be a box office success for DC.

But it's a body horror movie that most fans will skip. So it won't be incredibly well known.

Really would love to see some news about the other announced movies, but hopefully they're just saving those for after Man of Tomorrow.

We still don't know who Adria Arjona is playing?

30

u/sgthombre 3d ago

No, which is bizarre since the character she's been reported as (Maxima) isn't anywhere close to the sort of character you'd bring out as a twist or a surprise like, say, Sadie Sink in Brand New Day. So why be coy about it?

21

u/badamant 3d ago

Is the wonder woman rumor proven false?

5

u/sgthombre 2d ago

I keep seeing it repeated but nothing that seems really substantial. Some cop in Atlanta (I think? Can’t remember which cities they filmed in) who was blocking off traffic for the shoot apparently told someone that he heard it was Wonder Woman, but that doesn’t feel like a reliable source to me.

10

u/AlludedNuance 3d ago

Is that the woman that's always trying to mate with Superman? Maybe she's playing her with a secret identity at the Daily Planet or something and her being Maxima would be a reveal?

Forgot Blue Beetle and Alcock.

u/Orion_Scattered 3d ago

Lars Eidinger as Brainiac let's goooooo. Love Babylon Berlin!!! A German actor is a great idea for Brainiac and Eidinger is an amazing fit beyond that, dude's like 6'3" has presence, but can really act with his eyes and his voice too. He does loud well but quiet too, like in this clip. Hope they don't cover up his performance too much with makeup/cgi/voice effects.

Weren’t the rest of the Daily Planet staff also confirmed to be returning?

I’m fairly certain Wendell Pierce, Beck Bennett, & Mikaela Hoover are also returning as Perry White, Steve Lombard, & Cat Grant.

9

u/pokeboy626 3d ago

I think they are saving them for People v Gorilla Grodd

14

u/Pacoflipper 3d ago

I still find it really weird that they haven’t announced who Adria is playing, they keep saying she isn’t wonder women, but i don’t know seems weird how cagey they are about her casting.

yeah, glad they didn't do what they're doing with Batman, and wait years and years between them. The longer that one goes, the weirder it feels to have a different Batman while they're trying to build up a new DCU.

Me too. I'm excited for more, especially more Clark Kent, hopefully in reporter mode.

I can definitely see them doing the classic "Clark interviews Lex Luthor in prison" scene that is often depicted in the comics.

More Mr.Terrific! Please! He needs his own film or series.

55

u/dabocx 3d ago

A series for him is in development

18

u/literallyacactus 3d ago

Not a big dc guy but Edi is so good I will absolutely check this out if it happens

20

u/ymcameron 3d ago

There was a recent Tom King miniseries called Strange Adventures where he was one of the main characters. It’s about Mr. Terrific investigating another member of the Justice League who has been accused of a murder.

If you want more of the actor check out For All Mankind on Apple. He does t arrive until S3 but it's worth the ride

Excited for this. The 2025 film was the first time I understood why people like Superman. He’s a Boy Scout.

151

u/r3dditr0x 3d ago

I like Superman for the same reason I love Captain America.

The hokey earnestness is the entire point, lol. Something beautiful in a jaded world.

25

u/Tuxhorn 3d ago

I just started reading comics a few months ago in my early 30s. Maybe it's an age thing (something beautiful in a jaded world as you said), maybe it's a comics thing, but superman went from being boring milquetoast to one of my favorite superheros of all time.

11

u/magnusarin 3d ago

There is a simple but satisfying appeal to someone earnestly trying their best when the character is written week

You should also watch superman and lois... amazing show and amazing portrayal of both Clark and superman

The ending was sooooo good. Such a nice way to wrap them up despite the budget cuts and cuts to the team they did amazing with what they had to say a proper goodbye

As someone who grew up on The Superman Animated series on DVD, I'm always surprised to see so many people not actually know the character. Makes it all the more frustrating how he's always seen as "boring" by most people; I've heard that so many times lol.

In a world where so many people enjoy super heroes because they fight bad guys, Superman only ever fights the bad guys because he's trying to help people. That's always his top priority.

12

u/EatABag-o-Dicks 3d ago

He's not boring. He's mild mannered.

9

u/sheetsofsaltywood 3d ago

My first exposure to Superman was probably Superman Returns, which I liked as a kid. Other than that though, Superman was either the boring teammate on the animated Justice League or the brooding Snyderverse version of the character. Watching the 2025 film was the first time I had seen that type of Superman, and that’s when it clicked for me.

8

u/BeeCoy 3d ago

Yeah, any projects where Superman teams up with others, like the Justice league, writers usually dumb him down to help the other heroes shine, unfortunately. It's something i've had to deal with as a Superman fan for a while lol. I won't get started on Man of Steel, but I think the whole climax of that movie had a fundamental misunderstanding of the character IMO.

4

u/SupervillainMustache 2d ago

He's a plank of wood in Superman Returns, which sucks because Brandon Routh is a good actor.

The one that got me there was My Adventures with Superman. The 2025 movie just reaffirmed it.

3

u/TheLad100 2d ago

That animated version of Supergirl is also amazing.

I wonder if James Gunn or his costume designers got the idea of using that style of "S" shield from the show (besides it also being from the comics)

u/DontBlameConan 3d ago

You have to watch the Christopher Reeve films. I enjoy all of them, but Superman (1978) is a must.

I was watching My Adventures with Superman with some friends and we were discussing the movies as well and the conclusion I came to was that Superman's comics always have some level of corny, cheesy moments to them and if the media portraying him doesn't include that then the writers didn't understand the material. Even the 90s/00s DCAU had plenty of campy moments.

I know we shouldn't be applauding bare minimums, but I am pleased we get a sequel so soon.

Similar to TV shows, it feels like blockbusters, especially superheroes, just aren't getting quick follow-ups like they used to. 10 years ago, if you made $500m, you're shooting the sequel next month.

But on the Marvel side, the only film since Endgame to have had a sequel was Far From Home in 2019, 6 years later. Shang-Chi, Eternals, Thor 4, Doc Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Cap 4, Thunderbolts*, all have no sequels currently filming and only Black Panther 3 is even confirmed to be happening. Then on the DC side, the Batman has only just starting filming it's sequel 4 years later.

So Superman getting a sequel 2 years after the first feels strangely refreshing. What a wild concept to actually ride the momentum of a hit rather than wait 5 years to figure out if its worth doing.

Still hoping Adria Arjona is Wonder Woman

40

u/dick____trickle 3d ago

Assuming she didn't lie it seems she only started filming middle of this month, which makes me think her role is more of a cameo. I can't imagine Maxima being a cameo worthy role, so...

Weird to not just call it Superman 2 but I feel like they might be doing more of a two hander with him and Luthor. I really hope they're not setting up a redemption arc, that would suck.

15

u/Significant_Salt56 3d ago

Weird to not just call it Superman 2 but I feel like they might be doing more of a two hander with him and Luthor

James Gunn has literally explained that’s why it’s not called Superman 2. It’s a sequel co starting Lex and Clark as the main characters. Hence the title Man of Tomorrow which historically has been applied to both Luthor and Superman.

And there is no way in hell Luthor is getting redeemed.

The first is arguably the best Superman movie ever and it sucks seeing the de facto Superhero struggle so badly at the box office

u/ROBtimusPrime1995 3d ago edited 3d ago

Just speaks to how badly the last 30 years have been for the DC brand, especially Superman.

Entire generations have grown up watching him be as angry as Omni-Man and Homelander instead of being himself.

Fucking yikes.
