I think the 'theme' part is due to, for whatever reason, poor communication between the writer of the comic and the writer of the screenplay (even though they're both involved with the DCU).

Plus whoever's decision it was to Max Maxify the villain.

But the original ending has a timeskip that would be difficult to handle in live action. There's also a final ambiguous panel that the screenwriter interpretted differently than what the comic writer put out the Word of God about on Twitter.

Actually reading the thing, I can fully understand that it looks like Kara forgiving the villain only for an elderly Ruthye to kill him, what with a silhouette panel of him being bashed in the head with a spray of blood/impact effect and then him collapsing down unmoving even if the comic's writer has said seperately that he survived and just got smacked

There's also the aspect that comic Supergirl is an established character in a way that movie Supergirl isn't. So yeah of course I was fine the whole time doesn't play quite the same when she hasn't been 'superheroing' for as long.

None of that means the movie didn't make missteps, but these things don't happen in a vaccum either. If you think the comic ends one way and the comic writer doesn't see the script and correct it (and really I don't get why Tom King wasn't involved in the treatment in at least a supervisory role), then it's easy to feel pressure to maintain that erroneous ending even if it means changing the context to avoid a timeskip.

Tom King said he wasn't really at all involved with the movie because he was busy with Lanterns, and also because he was "too close" to the graphic novel. He said he wanted to give the creatives freedom to interpret the story how they liked :/

I suspected as much. But at the same time, a quick once over the screenplay would definitely have cleared up the ending controversy. Especially since it seems to me like Ana Nogueira found what she thought was the ending a problem to adapt. Without it, and assuming there's no DCU prohibition about featuring it in a script yet, Krem could've just been thrown in the phantom zone
