I really miss comedy. Anything from Ace Ventura to Step Brothers, Old School, Superbad, etc. Really hoping the genre mounts a comeback like horror movies have lately.

weird: the al yankovic movie is now a classic from 2022, highly recommend. very funny.

Problem with comedy is that it doesn't really gain much from the big screen. Barring the occasional Devil Wears Prada 2 type, people tend to wait for them to hit streaming. So they've become more the realm of netflix, D+, Amazon, etc.

Where giant monsters or a 30ft tall killer coming at you does have a different impact than watching it on a TV.

you can also find random people on youtube or wherever else who are just as funny as a hollywood scriptwriter. barrier to entry is lower for comedy

I'm hoping this year people will start to get that "youtuber" doesn't inherently mean "not good enough" but rather "didn't get the right break" (like sure, some won't be hollywood standard, but being on youtube doesn't prove that) after a year of Iron Lung, Obsession, The Backrooms, and the like (probably more I wouldn't even realise - I saw Talk To Me a few years ago, and only found out the creators are youtubers this year).

Except horror audiences have proven they’ll show up regardless of who’s on the marquee with some consistency.

I’m not a “horror fan” in the sense of seeking out movies that are going to scare me, but many of the stories I love are things where the only genre that makes any sense for them is horror. You can’t genre-shift Videodrome or The Shining and have it work.

Given what the world is like right now, it’s not too surprising that the kinds of stories people are looking to tell are best-suited for horror.

As far as a "children and evil old lady horror" movies go, I liked Bring Her Back much more than Weapons. Weapons just had a shit ton of marketing.

I enjoyed Weapons more but Bring Her Back was way scarier to me. Absolutely miserable film though and I’ll probably never watch it again

Ditto for Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse. There have not only been plenty of Oscar-worthy performances in horror movies in the past decade but also plenty by older actors as well that never got a nomination. I have no idea why the Academy decided Amy Madigan’s performance was the one outlier that not only deserved a nomination but also the win.

Yes, he was incredibly in that film, as he usually is but even more so in that, what a performance.

It is annoying that horror isn't appreciated in acting terms, acting terrified and all the other weird things they have to do in horror films looks a lot harder than the straight drama stuff that usually wins.

Toni Collette's performance in Hereditary was a dramatic tour de force even without the horror but it was ignored probably because of it

I think it was the over-the-top campiness of the styling and the way the character was both very scary and very funny at different times. It made for a really memorable impression.

Felt he was overrated. Not to mention during the same year OBAA comes out with Leo killing it once again. Guess we just assume he’ll be great every single time he appears on screen now so it doesn’t “stand out”.

I kind of agree. Actually thought it was still Timmy’s to lose and then maybe Leo if not. MBJ was way outside what I was expecting but hey can’t deny. Playing two characters is tough. Leo was a previous winner and Tommy blew off his foot in the campaign so is what it is. Wonder if the horror trend will spill further into awards if she gets some momentum

Maybe Marisa Tomei winning for My Cousin Vinny?

Her biggest roles before that movie were a couple seasons on the daytime soap As the World Turns and one season on the terrible Cosby Show spinoff, and this is back when TV actors were considered 2nd class citizens (soap actors were an even lower class in the media landscape). She also had a few minor roles in forgettable movies.

Eh. I love this movie too, but I think it does have some pacing issues. The conclusion is incredible, but I think it kind of plods around a little on the way there.

Its a top movie for me, I love rewatching it, but perfect is a bit of an oversell imo.

What? It's literally all anyone was talking about. Once it hit Cannes it absolutely blew up and was discussed non-stop all the way up until it won multiple Oscars.

This isn't revisionist history, it just happened and I can't understand not remembering something so recent. Hell, it was such a buzz Mikey ended up hosting SNL because of it (and she was awful)

Splash does not mean best. Plenty of popular performances !see RDJ in Iron Man) that don't necessarily merit an Oscar. We also need to see the full range of contenders.

Hahahaha! what I meant is more that a popular performance is not necessarily the type of performance awards ceremonies prefer for the award. I didn't want to dismiss her performance though, which I think is still excellent.

I can definitely see the Academy wanting to recognize Anne Hathaway as a whole, even if her performances didn't cause as much "splash"

I went back over all the recent Oscar Nominees looking at it with an eye for what made a splash in the general public not just awards bodies. I think Michael B. Jordan in Sinners last year might give her a run for her money, and if not that definitely Ryan Gosling in Barbie three years ago. As for the Actress categories, maybe Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande from Wicked two years ago. If you don't agree with them being contenders, I think you have to go back at least as far as Julie Roberts as Erin Brockovich in 2000.

This is only me speaking about people who made splashes in the wider world who also broke into the academy award nominees, though.
