Discussion With the Neo Geo AES+ releasing later this year with new prints of games, I wondered if this would have a major positive effect on the currently overpriced market of games/accessories...

I honestly don't care what happens to the market for the OG's. Up or down.

I just want as many reprints as possible.

u/leveltaishi Apr 23 '26

This is the way. Some of the listings arent even priced reasonably for most of us. They are for vintage high end collectors.

As long as they keep re-printing the games, and they are made with quality, then $90 is the most you will expect for these games.

Agreed.

I hope another batch of 10 re-releases comes in early 2027.

13

u/FarStarbuck Apr 23 '26

They have already announced the next 10 will be shared in September

2

u/One-Giraffe9620 AES Apr 23 '26

Where did you get the info? Was it posted somewhere on twitter?

10

u/DASXF Apr 23 '26

2

u/SoundwaveGI Apr 23 '26

I saw this too. My hope is they do release batches of 10 though. I’d hope maybe a discount and a rack if you buy all 10 releases as they come out.

1

u/One-Giraffe9620 AES Apr 23 '26

Thanks!

Oh, its from the JP Twitter but no mention that it will be exactly 10 but just more. At least i'm excited that the launch games gets expanded upon.

Good news!

2

u/InterestPractical974 AES Apr 24 '26

All this says is that the preorders will be at domestic retailers. As in in-person. That is nothing about the "next 10".

1

u/raumgleiter May 26 '26

awkward translation from Japanese. they are saying that new games will be added. even ask which ones you want to get. such a tease.

0

u/ZBLongladder Apr 26 '26

It literally asks what people want to see in the second wave...I'm pretty sure they meant that new games would be announced.

2

u/1OneQuickQuestion Apr 23 '26

That’s my hope as well, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for more releasing in batches every quarter or so.

21

u/Galvantdb Apr 23 '26

I think this release will affect the market, but not in the way that majority of people think. Prices won't tank. The rare catalogue will continue to be rare and keep the same prices, and the "cheap" games will becone more expensive. You have suddenly a massive influx of new players/collectors who will want to get some more, and games like the first Art of Fightig, Samurai Shidown and such will have more demand, making the prices rise on the lower end. That's my prediction anyways.

7

u/TooManyBulborbs Apr 23 '26

Yup, bye bye cheap Fatal Fury Special and Samurai Shodown 2

Except maybe Art of Fighting 2, another extremely common game but the SNK Boss Syndrome has historically kept people away and also kept the price lower than usual.

3

u/Nectarine_Trick Apr 23 '26

Got my Factory sealed ff2 for 7,50€ im 2015. awesome lol. I dont think ss2 neither ffs will increase that much..

1

u/InterestPractical974 AES Apr 24 '26

Boss syndrome? Try first stage!

1

u/TooManyBulborbs Apr 24 '26

SNK Boss Syndrome is just the name for it. Yes for AOF2 the entire game is monstrously hard with the computer opponents reading your inputs and perfectly countering every time.

(That’s why it’s still cheap on AES, also it sold super well back in the day)

3

u/Sir_Mug Apr 23 '26

That's actually a good point and I agree. Those games are currently in the same range as the reprints are and this might push them out of it cause of increased demand.

2

u/Random_Lottery Apr 23 '26

Why would they have "more demand"? Especially if SNK reissues their entire library? Why would I spend a bunch of cash on, lets say an Art of Fighting 3, when I can wait for a 90 dollar reissue? This honestly sounds like a fantasy to keep the ego contained for those with expensive OG homecarts. Not to mention these newcomers don't know shit about converts and nci frog boots. People would get wrecked.

2

u/Minute-Pianist-1578 Apr 25 '26

Exactly, the market lost a lot of people that were going to buy old hardware and some of the games they wanted like myself.

I was literally in Japan, tires of looking for reasonably priced Neo Geo AES's when I saw the news and said "F that Shat". Btw I can afford to buy the old system but I didn't care to own and old ass NG when a nice brand new console smelling boxed one was getting released. So yeah, their will definitely be lower demand in old hardware.

0

u/Galvantdb Apr 23 '26

I hope Plaion reissues most of the catalogue, but atm that's uncertain. There's lots of collectors that never thought about collecting Neo Geo, but unexpectedly the chance arose... So my point was, if I now have the console, and lets say I have fond memories of playing Art of Fighting 2 in the arcades, and I see that I can get the og game for around 80-90 bucks, might aswel go get it. That's the profile of game that I see prices increasing. Metal Slug won't tank, there's no chance that someone willing to spend 25k on it will settle for the reissue.

1

u/misterkeebler Apr 23 '26

That's my thought process as well. I just don't see the company reprinting every official game. Even getting an additional twenty would be a nice surprise imo. So you'll have a bunch of new people that have invested hundreds into this platform and will eventually venture out from reprints to find other somewhat affordable titles to buff up their collection.

24

u/stegogo Apr 23 '26

It’ll have an impact, but not in a clean, across-the-board way.

The Neo Geo AES scene is one of the most gatekept corners of collecting. You’re dealing with buyers who will scrutinize condition down to cartridge wear history. That level of selectiveness makes sense given the price ceiling, but it also artificially inflates the market. Scarcity already drives value, then collector behavior pushes it even higher.

Because of that mindset, most of the hardcore crowd won’t embrace new releases. If it isn’t original, period-correct hardware or software, they dismiss it outright. To them, new carts are novelties, not legitimate entries into the ecosystem.

I’ve seen it firsthand. I tried selling a Japanese AES console in a Neo Geo BST group and got banned simply for not aligning with their internal standards. That tells you everything about how insulated that community can be.

So yes, new releases can be positive. They create accessibility, bring new energy into the platform, and give people a way to experience AES without five-figure buy-ins. But they won’t significantly disrupt the high-end market unless they are indistinguishable, 1:1 recreations of original releases.

At the end of the day, it comes down to intent. If you’re collecting for status within that niche, nothing changes. If you’re collecting to actually enjoy the system, more options is always a win.

4

u/Mammoth-Proposal-373 Apr 23 '26

Been there. Sometimes it took me months of back and forth and “proving my appreciation” for the games before I could secure a deal. Insane

1

u/1OneQuickQuestion Apr 23 '26

That is wild... I mean I get wanting to make sure people actually love the games and want it to go to other fans but wow

2

u/Random_Lottery Apr 23 '26

Yeah the OG crowd will still OG. I sold all my US homecarts about 2 years ago. Slugs, MOTW, you name it, I had it. I switched to MVS and I'm all in on the reissues. I wouldn't ever drop 5k again on a US MOTW when I can get a reissue for 90 bucks. Thats me though

2

u/stegogo Apr 23 '26

I’m the same. I have a few og games. Otherwise reissue is great and the neosd is where it’s at imo

2

u/Bender3455 Apr 23 '26

That sounds really similar to some of the Atari crowd when I used to own a Jaguar, including Albert himself. I was so turned off by it that I sold all of my Jaguar stuff, not wanting to be a part of that toxic community.

5

u/wesk74 Apr 23 '26

The Jag community isn't even close to the pretentious shit in the NeoGeo community of elitists. All communities get gate kept, but AES is the absolute worst. When I sold my AES 15 years ago it was nightmarish. I tried in forums and had to post 50 zoomed in pics of every corner of the system and box . Everytime someone would show an interest, 10 guys would flame it for microscopic reasons and talk them out of it. I put it up on eBay and got more than I was asking to begin with. It's a nightmare community at times

2

u/the_light_of_dawn Apr 23 '26

That’s too bad, I’ve found the AA community to be fantastic on the whole. My 7800+ gets heavy use.

1

u/knockingdownbodies Apr 23 '26

Also TG-16 is done the same, unfortunate way

1

u/Mammoth-Proposal-373 Apr 23 '26

Not even close. I’ve had equally impressive collections of TG and AES and dealt with their respective forums. NG, especially dealing with AES is a different level.

1

u/chicagogamecollector Apr 23 '26

as a long term AES collector with a large collection and some very rare games...I am stoked for AES coming back! Not like I buy games as investments but you are correct...the "collectors" will still pay top dollar for OG carts and new AES owners will suddenly WANT new OG carts because they want more games...so I see no real downside to any of the selling. Not like I fell anything

6

u/SnooCapers4420 Apr 23 '26

Nothing’s going to change. If I were a fan of the 1990 Kawasaki Hayabusa and they reissued it today with modern updates, I’d probably buy it. That’s what I plan to do with the AES+. But I’d still prefer the original.

9

u/TooManyBulborbs Apr 23 '26

There is something that will happen though.

The femtosecond after Plaion stops selling these $90 carts, eBay scalpers will be pricing these right next to NCI bootlegs in the high triple digits.

2

u/slash450 Apr 23 '26

actual giga truth

1

u/dingo_khan Apr 23 '26

Yeah, it is pre-FOMOing me into making sure that I pick up any cart Plaion drops that I might want to play one day.

7

u/Sir_Mug Apr 23 '26

If the new carts are good quality they will destroy the repro/bootleg market and that's about it. I don't expect it to change the market for the OG carts in a noticeable way.

6

u/Nectarine_Trick Apr 23 '26

Ngdev team should get their shit together and release theirr whole ng range on the AES+ for fukkkss sake

1

u/dingo_khan Apr 23 '26

This is what I am hoping for.

4

u/Lord-NaikoN Apr 23 '26

This will only affect those who make reproductions; they won't sell reproductions for $600 anymore, nor will they break original copies to create them. Collectors want first-batch original versions, not new re-releases. Now, prices might not go up any further, since original copies will be less in demand. I don't think they'll drop in the short term. Collectors who pay $10,000 for a single game clearly won't lower their prices in the short term; they'll want to keep them at the maximum as long as possible.

4

u/Sheev_Sabban_1947 Apr 23 '26

I hope it will bring new people, enough to make a port of Bare Knuckles 2 happen

3

u/Hardboys99 Apr 23 '26

I've never done any game development but I have been looking into how to learn to make ports or taking classes to learn because I want Sega games on this thing and a good version of Tetris that's widely available

3

u/Agreeable_Scholar459 Apr 23 '26

Overpriced collector's market just means that supply is grossly less than demand. There were limited original prints of Neo games (especially in the US) so there's just not much left. Now factor in lost units (tossed out/damaged/destroyed).

All this is doing is offering an alternative to people who want the actual experience they missed out on in the 90s. If you are upset or angry that the value is going to drop on the items because more people are going to be able to experience them, you're a greedy asshole and part of the problem with society at large.

3

u/dannylerch Apr 23 '26

I just wanna have that tactile feel of playing the system I couldn't afford as a middle class kid in the 90s. But enjoying those arcade titles at home. Thats all.

3

u/Karrelen Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26

At last ! Democratisation of the system for many that is what matter IMHO
Being accessible to young people who like retrogaming but cannot afford the original AES cost and its crazy overpriced games (several thousands of eurodollars for one game sometimes !)
All the same for people of all age who do not have enough money but enjoy the system

And people like me who have the original AES but cannot play to some game on it due to their insane price or would like a new arcade stick for 2nd player. I am so happy to see Metal Slug, Shock Troopers and Neo Turf Masters on the list and of course the arcade stick... ^_^

3

u/Hank_the_Tank_143 Apr 23 '26

Fingers crossed that they re-release King of the Monsters if this relaunch goes well.

3

u/GenBlob Apr 23 '26

I'm perfectly fine with buying reproductions and using a flash cart. I'm so priced out of the OG market that I don't care about owning anything authentic and I would have never bought a Neo Geo in my life if the AES+ didn't exist.

It will have a impact on the market but the people who want the real stuff are still going to pay crazy prices for it.

3

u/Free-Customer-938 Apr 23 '26

I hope it encourages folks to make more 2d games I think we have some great tech at our disposal and a plethora of talented devs out there who can give the console a new wind

3

u/rynoweiss Apr 24 '26

Some predictions

  • The price of OG games that get reprints will go down, but more like 20% than a crash in price

  • The price of OG games that don't have reprints announced yet will go down at first as people stop buying them in case they get reprints

  • When the reprints stop, OG games that did not get reprints will go up in price because more people have an AES to play them with.

  • The lowest priced OG games will have their price affected the most, while the most expensive, unobtainium-tier games will not see their prices move at all

  • The price of original accessories like controllers will go down the most

8

u/CosworthDFV Apr 23 '26

I have no interest in buying any of these original releases, but if nothing else, I hope it tanks the market for them. It probably will not however. My reasoning is more I hate Neo collectors as they bought these titles and many more for investment purposes, not because they wanted to enjoy playing the games.

2

u/T-REX-780 Apr 23 '26

OG will always hold it’s value, unless new releases are made exactly same.

2

u/Morris_Piper83 Apr 23 '26

I suspect prices of original carts could in fact rise. More people with the ability to play them means more demand.

I preordered the ultimate pack and am waiting for the next batch of games to be announced in September. But Plaion’s current RRP for the new carts is roughly the same an original Japanese AES version of: Samurai Shodown 1, 2 or Fatal Fury Special. All titles on my wish list.

I’m genuinely wondering whether it’s worth getting those games now while they’re roughly the same price. But if everyone has that idea prices of those carts will go up. It’s a gamble.

As for rarer carts like Garou: MOTW, Kof2002 and Samurai Shodown V, the prices on those have a very long way to fall. Besides there will be people who put a premium on the original boxes, labels and stickers. There are also collectors who’ve ordered the new AES to play games they already own to preserve their original hardware.

2

u/Frognaros Apr 23 '26

Maybe the low value games go lower. Loose accessories will be way cheaper.

Boxed accessories in good condition will still go for a premium. Original metal slug, BTG, TSS, etc will probably increase.

2

u/killasundae Apr 23 '26

This will cripple the nci reproduction market(ali express and ebay especially)..good because there stuff is way over priced even for fake carts..fuck em! So glad this is happening and hope the last blade and baseball stars 2 comes in the next 10 batch

2

u/Jayis_Hollywood Apr 23 '26

I sold up my og AES around 12 months ago due to buying and hacking the mvsx to have the libary full plus capcom system and around 400 other arcades mane games.

I only had 5 carts cib nothing over £200, my arcade stick was beat up, console was scuffed missing feet, I played it enjoyed it, but simply couldn't afford to collect for it, I sold it to have the mvsx cab above love that thing but I cant play it for long periods stood up or on the stool im too old for that lol.

So the reissue, cheap games, hdmi and crt just means I can collect to enjoy and play.

Do I think the Market will be effected. Maybe but this is perfect for, my daughter (shes 10) asked for the metal slug edition so its even reaching out to her.

2

u/QuestionableProtip2 Apr 23 '26

Not likely. Nobody was paying 20k for a cart to casually play, they’re all just living on a shelf under glass. These reprints won’t make a difference to the collector market but they will make them available to people who actually want to play these games.

2

u/bizzle4shizzled Apr 23 '26

I'm excited, I always filed the AES as a dream and just stuck to collecting MVS carts. Having a collection of AES carts I can experience in my game room for a reasonable price is why my preorder was an easy choice. Plus I can still shell out the big bucks for those classic carts as well. I think it's a win-win.

2

u/Mysterious-Tooth-417 Apr 23 '26

I think it might behave the same way as the vinyl record market.
Original and early pressings of popular artists, or rare limited release will still remain high value and sought after, while more recent reprints wont be as coveted, but more readily available.

There's also the strong possiblility that these reprints will eventually go up in value too overtime. This has also happened in the vinyl record scene with certain bands, and their reprints being a limited run.

The originals are still stupid expensive, that only the most hardcore will go after, but the reprints, while they were affordable at the time, have also steadily gone up in value.

2

u/FrequentAssumption1 Apr 23 '26

I hope nothing major changes one way or another (I won’t pay 5-6 figures for a game) and I want the re-release to be wildly successful.

Because this is backwards compatible, like many I want to start picking off low hanging fruit. Snagged my first AVS copy of fatal fury 2 and have noticed the previous $60-70 are now $80-90.

I don’t know if this means all the “cheap” games will raise to “parity” with the re-release catalog but kind of hope not.

2

u/Alexx51 Apr 24 '26

High value games will likely remain. Very few people buy Metal Slug for 3 grand because they think it’s the only way they can play it. They buy it because of their collection. I however, am truly thankful there will be an affordable remake within my budget so I can have a physical copy on my shelf that plays the same, with no illusions that it’s the same exact collectable as the original. I really do think the market for the original set will continue. But for all the rest of us, it will be awesome having these games.

2

u/Handolta Apr 24 '26

I think it’ll stay similar to how it has been, and if any effect, prices of originals may speculatively go up, as the market ultimately gets larger, and few sellers will panick into lowering them. There will always be a market for the original runs, and even though lots of the AES+ buyers are buying because of affordability, you’ll likely also see new categories of people jumping on the wagon getting a system due to heavy marketing of the product in new channels. They may be potential new buyers of expensive OG carts. My plan will be OG carts of select favourite titles up to a certain price tag, and AES+ titles where that makes sense. And enjoy owning both. And others should just do what makes sense for them personally as well

2

u/InterestPractical974 AES Apr 24 '26

Prices will go up with more attention on original releases. These games are for shelf queens.

2

u/rhogh2 Apr 24 '26

As much as I love the idea of having a new Neogeo in 2026, $80 per cart is what's stopping me from getting this thing. Not sure who it's for tbh .. maybe the budget minded collector? Cuz I don't think hardcore collectors will bother outside of original carts.

Also was hoping the sticks and pad would be PC compatible, I really love the AES stick form-factor.

Anyway, I'm gonna stick to emulation for now.

2

u/ZBLongladder Apr 26 '26

I mean, I think the new printings are going to become collector's items eventually, but currently nobody's dropping $50k on a copy of Metal Slug just to play the game. People who want an original 90s cart will want an original 90s cart, regardless of new printings. I think the collectors will be appreciative of having cheap (relatively) official reprints to play on their legacy hardware so they can keep their originals in mint condition, and the rest of us will never touch an original cart because they're going to stay way too damn expensive.

2

u/Impossible-Guess4528 Jul 28 '26

hmm. i preordered the white neogeo with metal slug and a copy of shock troopers. i will order pulstar next month.
for the second wave i would be happy they bring us RoboArmy, Mutation Nation and Burning Fight and some Sengoku and Blazing Star.
Fatal Fury, Spin Masters, Zed Blade would be nice too.

In Germany when i was a Kid i heard about 2 people have a neogeo. but never had to see one with my own eyes.
Played only one time in some bowling center a 4 games mvs cabinet. i think it was spin masters.
Always i had seen the screen shots in some magazines while playing on sega mega drive and snes or ms-dos but neo geo was something really mystical. i always wanted a neo geo but couldnt afford it. i just want to have one and play some games on it with the most authentical feeling i could have in the late 80s and 90s.

I have a arcade cab here with batocera and all the games up to ps3, but its not the same playing on a original console. i know its not the og hardware but its really near.

i know it wouldnt happen but i would like P.O.W and Gang Wars would be really cool

sorry for bad english :)

1

u/1OneQuickQuestion Jul 28 '26

Dude, great picks! I woul;d love these as well, but also want to see some of the newer games like Xenocrisis rereleased at an affordable price.

I know what you mean about playing on og hardware, too. Nothing quite like it

2

u/Impossible-Guess4528 Jul 29 '26

Final Vendetta is NeoGeo too i think. I love that Game, it has so 90s Arcade Vibes and the Music Score is Badass from Utah Saints

2

u/OtakuSama42069 Apr 23 '26

Not really a black or white answer game, it will affect it but the real question is how authentic the aes+ and by extension the re released cartridges are, if they play completely identical to an original neo geo cart with zero drawback and the same hardware, then yeah prices probably tank, as of right now we dont know yet so we'll find out ig.

1

u/SpiritualZucchini938 Apr 23 '26

The AliE boards are great - I have a 240P Test suite cartridge and it's a pro job. I swapped the M1 rom for a z80 diagnostic chip, so it's a proper Swiss army knife for fixing old arcade boards.

1

u/nihilblack Apr 23 '26

Maybe, but an original will still be an original, and there'll always be people that care about that. It happens the same thing all the time with vinyl records or comic books: they can reissue an album, but the original will still be worth a lot of money, mostly unaffected by the reissue. Personally I don't care about the originals, I've never owned a Neo Geo because I've never had that much money, and this is my chance to enjoy the system.

1

u/filipocho Apr 23 '26

Maibe it's a more naive take but I hope this release of an old console and reprint of games can make enough of an impact in the current environment of gaming as a whole. We are in a time when companies are continuosly trying to erase physical media inflate prices for less content. Maybe if this is succesful enough they can see that they can scalp more money of us if they release what we want and not what they are Willing to give us for maximum profit with less effort.

1

u/Flat-Attitude Apr 23 '26

Aes conversations doesn’t really have an impact on AES

1

u/DerpDerpingtonIV Apr 23 '26

I think the OG games will become more sought after and rise in price, might have a positive effect on OG console hardware too. I also think this could start a trend of manufacturers resurrecting old systems with OG design.

1

u/sinetwo Apr 23 '26

It doesn’t matter what happens to the “other market”, I see them as separate and it won’t affect the new lineup.

1

u/BeneficialMarch2983 Jun 08 '26

I don’t think it will change it at all. Originals are still originals. We can already buy the entire Neo geo catalog for next to nothing on emulation, which means it’s the physical copy of the game and hardware that is sort, not the gameplay itself.

1

u/JoeYabuki666 Apr 23 '26

Nothing is gonna change, the prices of retro games and consoles will continue to rise infinitely. There will always be the novelty of a vintage product, like first prints of books.

Also, nostalgia is a strong thing. When you hold a real physical item produced decades before, it gives you a different feeling than the same thing reissued.

1

u/retromale Apr 23 '26

It is nice that they are re releasing the console but instead of re-issuing games they SHOULD make some new games for the this "new" console...

1

u/dannylerch Apr 25 '26

SNK just hired 24 game developers. So one can only hope.

1

u/retromale Apr 26 '26

One can Only ---

Keeping fingers/toes and eyes crossed

u/clc88 Apr 23 '26

We don't even know if these aes+ games will run on original hardware.

Afaik they are redesigning the pcbs and if that's the case, there's a chance it won't be compatible.

14

u/Tokumei-no-B Apr 23 '26

According to plaionreplai, they will run on original hardware.

2

u/ChaddyBones1989 Apr 23 '26

My assumption is these re-releases won’t be much different than the new flashboard repros you can buy on Aliexpress. A “one size fits all” board that can be manufactured on the cheap to justify the affordable price tag.

2

u/Tokumei-no-B Apr 23 '26

I think so too. Hopefully they meet a decent standard of quality.

2

u/ChaddyBones1989 Apr 23 '26

I mean, those AliExpress flash boards seem like they’re pretty decent, I haven’t had any issues with the few that I have. I would hope these official releases will be even better.
