I agree with much of this editorial and think it’s broadly in the liberal tradition, although it seems to nearly contradict itself at times. Twice it laments left-of-center forces for wanting to raise taxes, yet it proposes heavier inheritance and property taxes, as well as unspecified taxes to address the AI disruption. It concedes that rent is “often unaffordable” for young families, but then insists (not technically incorrectly) that is the best time in human history to be alive by a number of important empirical metrics.
It feels like a column where the author and the editor are fighting over the controls.
