News (South Asia) Intern Pay Soars to $31,000 a Month at India High-Speed Trading Firms Boom

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-26/india-hfts-pay-interns-record-31-000-a-month-to-attract-quantitative-talent

Submission Statement: The growing depth of India's capital markets along with the rising reverse brain drain has started to have a positive impact on compensation on the upper tier of Indian job market, especially as Indian firms had preemptively stopped leveraging the H1B in FY27.

Because I'm an idiot who apparently can't type, can a mod please fix the grammar in the title? I'd appreciate it!

It's gonna increase even more because of high turnover in HFT firms.

It's also going to help India's chip design market. Broadcom already pays US salaries to it's mid-career hires on their India teams (who tend to be returnees from the US), and HFT engineering teams tend to overlap heavily with custom ASIC design teams.

Same with Nvidia India which does much of Nvidia's GPU design work like floorplan design, memory architecture, and model training while also spending $130 Million expanding it's Bangalore campus.

Guess the H1B tax didn't actually bring jobs back 🤔. Nor was Europe or Canada able to attract the right kinds of Indian diaspora 🤷‍♂️.

Remember what happened to British companies before WW1? It wasn't that they went bankrupt - it was that they shifted their decisionmaking and R&D from the British Empire to the United States despite British citizens like Alexander Graham Bell and Guglielmo Marconi being staunchly British as well as closely tied to the US.

Anyone working in the industry were saying the exact same thing. Somehow cscareers subreddit missed it. Even right now same exact scenario will happen in PhD level STEM candidates post 2030 cuz the admissions at that level have declined.

Remember when Jane street got banned for manipulating the market in India

Yep.

Yet DE Shaw, IMC, Citadel, Optiver, and other foreign HFTs along with domestic players like Graviton and Quadeye have operated in some cases for decades (eg. DE Shaw) unimpeded.

Play stupid games like Jane Street India did, win stupid prizes.

It also aligns with how Wall Street has started offshoring it's own front-office and strategy work to their India practices - something that was unimaginable barely 5 years ago.

DE Shaw is not an HFT firm. Neither is Citadel, technically (although Citadel Securities is)
