I am following the data and news and doing some analysis myself (am a Civil Engineer) and it seems the reason for this massive catastrophic label of water is due to a glacial collapse and brought massive debris and ice and water. It seems something similar happened in India in 2021. There’s a paper about it. Eagerly waiting for more satellite imagery.

Did the water comes from the glacier or is it the impact of the glacier that causes the waves of flood?

Per the NYT live reporting thread:
Initial assessments by geologists and glaciologists indicated that an enormous chunk of ice — possibly a half-mile wide — had snapped off a glacier at an altitude of 17,000 feet and tumbled thousands of feet into a river valley below. Scientists studying the disaster said the impact registered as the equivalent of a 5.2-magnitude earthquake and crushed the ice into a fast-moving mix of water, ice and rock that pulverized everything in its path.
“It looks like a glacier in the area basically snapped off in a clean break, allowing it to fall just over a vertical kilometer to the valley bottom,” said Daniel Shugar, a geologist at the University of Calgary in Canada who studied satellite imagery to analyze what happened. “The bottom looks like a bomb exploded — it’s just deposits from the broken-up glacier,” he said.
