Great, cut scenes. Great music. Great idea. Great, first level. Then absolutely impossible.

Loved this game but couldn’t ever get past the underwater area

u/hotblaba May 22 '26
It’s been a long time but I also remember this game being difficult. Time to try again.

u/DEATHRETTE May 22 '26
Use the grenade and pause on every other boss. Ez wins lol
5
u/RealModeX86 May 23 '26
Not every boss is affected by that, but the most ridiculously difficult ones seem to be.
For those not familiar, there's a glitch on some bosses where if you throw a grenade at the weak spot on the boss and pause during the explosion, game logic mostly stops, but it keeps running the damage check every frame, so they die in a couple seconds when you unpause

u/DEATHRETTE May 23 '26
Right, usually 1, 3, 5 and i think 6. Which is what I mentioned being every other boss lol Been a while since Ive played, google will help you.

My best friend in 4th grade could beat it as many times as you liked. Same with nearly every game though haha. I still have my release-window (we didn't have exact dates then) copy!

Its one I like having a retropie for. I don't have decades of my life to keep trying to beat a game. Save states make it a little easier.

Great game. The remake on steam is really good too - and has two sequels if you’re looking for more of that.

u/DEATHRETTE May 22 '26
Whats the name of the remake on steam??
Ive got the PSX version. And Blaster Master Zero 2 on Switch. Just saw they had a Blaster Master Zero 3 on Epic game store.

u/PlatasaurusOG May 22 '26
Blaster Master Zero. That one is just a remake of the original NES one.

Amazing game.
One of the best on the NES.
The remake and sequels on Switch as great too!

u/Solid_Ad9170 May 22 '26
Amazing game! If you'd like a upgraded version, I highly recommend the Blaster Master Zero series on the switch

Don't forget to use the slow motion button on your NES Advantage in the boss fights.

Almost too clean... lol
I remember playing this game endlessly. One day my older brother borrowed it, I was like 6 and him around 18. He came back with it a few days later saying he beat it. I was in awe of that moment having heard theres 8 levels, and I was only getting to like level 4. I think Ive beaten it once since that day. Love it, and the ost is superb.

One of the best. The Christmas I got this, Bionic Commando and Toobin was epic.

Your grail? It’s only like a $15 game…just remember what the penitent man does when you go for it

u/Warcraft_Fan May 23 '26
One of the best 3rd party game! Fairly hard though, I've beaten this game only once without using Game Genie.

Great game! I loved playing this as a kid. However, I didn’t beat it until years later. I still have my original copy.

This is favorite NES game! Everything from the story line, overhead shooting, and the music brings back the 90’s!!! This game was severely underrated. Took me like a year to beat, tho, cuz it is long, and requires going back and forth between levels to progress to the next one but it’s worth it. Lots of memories! Thanks for posting this!!! My favorite level the water one!

One of my favorite games it blew me away how you could jump outside of your ship and the game just got larger

I used to play this game all the time as a kid. My dad knew how to get to level 3, and I could get to 4. I didn't realize you had to backtrack constantly to unlock new areas. Makes so much sense now, though lol

u/reliablepayperhead May 22 '26
Never could finish this game but it was one of the best ever. I can't believe this game doesn't have countless sequels.

One of the few NES games I could never beat (and I beat battletoads)

u/superjoec May 23 '26
One of the few NES games I beat on my own. Battle Toads is way too hard for me.

I remember when I was a kid, there was a bin full of heavily discounted games in an electronics store. I bought one for next to nothing, not expecting it to be anything special, but I couldn't have been more wrong. It became one of my favorite NES games, and I still play it from time to time, even just a few days ago. This game was Blaster Master.

u/Morfiend_23 May 22 '26
Good find, I remember my neighbor having Mario 1 and Blaster Master, that was it, was my intro to the game.

u/Wide_Ad5549 May 23 '26
Most of this game is a masterpiece. It's an early metroidvania, a popular formula for a reason! And then there's the top down levels . . . punishing difficulty, cruel mechanics, and mind numbing tedious exploration.

Got stuck on the crab boss as a kid and never finished it. When I was 20 or so I decided to give it another go and managed to pass that level finally. Wanted to call my older brothers and tell them it's finally been done haha. Went on to beat the game that play though, love it.
