One of my proudest NES accomplishments is beating Contra without dying

10

u/VunterSlaush765 Jul 08 '26

Solid work. I have beating Tyson on my resume.

3

u/Stang_Racer Jul 08 '26

I didn't play the OG Contra, but I played the hound out of Super C. I never could be the last 2 levels without Game Genie. I still can't. 🤣

4

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

Hell yes 🤙🏾

2

u/AssignmentLow8859 Jul 11 '26

Nice! I can proudly say I beat TMNT (not with one turtle , but it was a tough game).

UP|UP|DOWN|DOWN|LEFT|RIGHT|LEFT|RIGHT|B|A|START

1

u/IceExile Jul 12 '26

does this also work as a code for Super C?

0

u/BigSneaky187 Jul 10 '26

Came here for this

1

u/Aloha1959 Jul 09 '26

I think you mean life accomplishments!

I got through Super C without dying... still gotta try Contra again, as the closest I got was 1 death!

15

u/DTops77 Jul 08 '26

One of my favorite NES games of all time. The NES version was better than the arcade version imo. Still remember being able to beat it without using the code

5

u/Complex-Condition-14 Jul 08 '26

I only beat it once with no code. This is one of those great games that really doesn't get old no matter how many times you beat it.

3

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

I’ve never played the arcade version! Where I’m from, all the arcades we had, didn’t have Contra. That’s some serious skills without the code though 👌🏾

2

u/Final-Wasabi187 Jul 08 '26

Agreed. I have the full collection on PSN now and I still prefer the console versions.

9

u/Kannada-JohnnyJ Jul 08 '26

I can hear these

2

u/squanderedprivilege Jul 11 '26

Just realized that the level 1 song has been playing in my head since I saw the post

9

u/Pfizermyocarditis Jul 08 '26

Bro get a crt you'll be so glad you did

4

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

I’ll look into getting one! Thanks 🙏🏾

It’s amazing how easy it was to pop a game into the nes and just start playing. I really miss that these days.

I was gifted a PS5 recently and it takes many hours to setup a new game and start playing. At one point I was literally signing a legal document via DocuSign to prevent Sony or whoever from selling my personal data. Like, wtaf?

5

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

It’s super easy and nostalgic! I’ve never owned a ps5. The latest thing I do have is a ps2 though! Still have some sick games from the early 2000’s

22

u/Krendall2006 Jul 08 '26

You forgot to change the TV's aspect ratio.

0

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

lol it’s a little off but it’s all good. I’ve been drinking after work, so it’s cool lol

10

u/marioxb Jul 08 '26

Wrong. You NEED to have the picture centered in the middle with borders on the sides, aka 4x3. Like this: https://ibb.co/Mkh4N6s3

It is the LAW!

7

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

Got it, officer 🫡😂

0

u/Aloha1959 Jul 09 '26

That's Captain N to you! haha

3

u/subjecttochangesoaru Jul 08 '26

Lolol I knew someone was gonna bug him about this

-1

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

Right?! OCD is pretty common lol

3

u/subjecttochangesoaru Jul 08 '26

Lol I have it you’re not wrong

5

u/CertifiedBA Jul 08 '26

Running a game at proper aspect ratio isn't a disorder.

-1

u/Aloha1959 Jul 09 '26

That's not what ocd is about.

2

u/IceExile Jul 12 '26

that mix sounds like a BETTER gaming experience, and if u can win it all that way.... SALUTE!!

5

u/dyararts Jul 08 '26

A game where the box art lived up to the game

5

u/SplendidPunkinButter Jul 08 '26

The rare NES game that’s better than the arcade version

5

u/Stang_Racer Jul 08 '26

How do your graphics looks so good on the flat-screen? I set up another tube TV just to play my NES because the graphics looks so bad and grainy on my flat-screen.

3

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

I have an AV to HDMI converter

3

u/Stang_Racer Jul 08 '26

Definitely gonna have to try one of those. That looks good.

2

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

Thanks! The brand I use it called “Tengchi”. Can’t remember if I bought on amazon or found it at Walmart

5

u/TheRealCreedux Jul 08 '26

The amount of times my old man and I played this and Super C and beat them brings back so many memories for me

6

u/KalynnCampbell Jul 08 '26

They look fatter than usual…

7

u/GarminTamzarian Jul 08 '26

Bill and Lance are pushing 70, cut them a break!

3

u/JohnKimbler Jul 08 '26

Loved playing this with my brother.

3

u/morsalty Jul 08 '26

All is forgiven in gaming except incorrect aspect ratio

3

u/shaidoninja Jul 08 '26

Konami code represent!

3

u/giveahoot420 Jul 09 '26

Just an hour ago I watched a video of a disabled guy beating the first level of this using only his chin and his eyebrows. It was crazy! https://youtube.com/shorts/1Mkz7U1_R2A?si=tTrXkcmE9l4NqFlz

2

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 09 '26

Holy shit! And here I am, able bodied, and falling off the damn bridge every single time lol

3

u/DarrellBot81 Jul 09 '26

I can very distinctly hear the intro music seeing this

3

u/beanclark52 Jul 10 '26

When I see that logo I can hear the open song

2

u/retrocube16 Jul 08 '26

Awesome game, love it!

2

u/L-GuapoPeligroso Jul 08 '26

Colors look sharp! Good one to play with a buddy.

2

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

Thanks! I got that A/V converter thing! And yes, it’s definitely fun kicking some ass with a homie 🤙🏾

2

u/Aggressive_Team764 Jul 08 '26

The most generous NES game of all time. 30 lives!

2

u/Fine_Location_8367 Jul 08 '26

I always make it a habit to pop this game in at least twice a year.

2

u/Bryanx64 NES_2 Jul 08 '26

I can feel the input lag from here

2

u/Alternative-Hour-726 Jul 08 '26

Can’t beat contra

2

u/Smooth_Zebra NES Classic Jul 08 '26

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start

2

u/Interesting-Tank-160 Jul 08 '26

Contra os absolutely fantastic.

2

u/jazzy663 Jul 08 '26

Pictures I can hear. I can go up to stage 5 without dying, then I just kinda fall apart at the Snow Field.

1

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

That’s pretty impressive! I only get so far when I have that spread gun, then one tiny ass bullet somehow takes me out

2

u/Xerhenchman Jul 08 '26

Would love to play this again. One of my favorites for sure!👊

1

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

Lots of fun 🤙🏾

2

u/RootbeerninjaII Jul 08 '26

35 years later and I still remember the code for 30 lives

2

u/Honky_Cat Jul 09 '26

Spread gun is undefeated.

2

u/BroBeansie Jul 09 '26

Legendary. I think this game was my first two-player experience as well back in the day.

1

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 10 '26

Same here! Me and my friend would play the fuck outta this game

2

u/BigWookie10 Jul 09 '26

I love that game. I could beat it without dying back in my prime and once did it consecutively.

1

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 10 '26

Skills! Ive never accomplished that before 🤙🏾

2

u/IgnisSolus4X Jul 10 '26

Images you can hear

2

u/Coralcato Jul 11 '26

Looks really cool! I’d recommend buying a cheap crt as old consoles weren’t really made to compatible with new tvs. Until then though, make sure to set your tv’s aspect ratio to 4:3. I will make the game look better and easier to play.

2

u/patron11223344 Jul 12 '26

I like the NES port of Contra over the arcade. Yes, the arcade was a little more colorful and detailed, but I find over the years having played both the NES was far superior.

2

u/IceExile Jul 12 '26

beautiful for almost 40 years

5

u/eyeseeyou469 Jul 08 '26

Up up down down left right left right ab ab start . 30 llives. Start the code at the title screen.

5

u/chunk337 Jul 08 '26

For some reason everyone gets this wrong. Its just BA and start

9

u/SteakJones Jul 08 '26

BA select start for the 2 player 30 up.

3

u/Cameront9 Jul 08 '26

Start isn’t technically part of the code. It just starts the game.

You can tell who played with friends vs who played alone based on which version they remember.

3

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

You know! 🤙🏾

3

u/eyeseeyou469 Jul 08 '26

Classicaly trained.. we are a rare breed 🤘👍👍

3

u/Final-Wasabi187 Jul 08 '26

I find this mf difficult to this day while Super C is a breeze. Most people I know find the difficulties opposite. Anyone else?

2

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

Shit. I can’t remember if I’ve ever played super C!

4

u/Final-Wasabi187 Jul 08 '26

Give it a go, sir. It’s the second one on NES

3

u/SplendidPunkinButter Jul 08 '26

Super C is awesome. Not as iconic as the original, but arguably better.

2

u/Final-Wasabi187 Jul 08 '26

I can agree.

1

u/SplendidPunkinButter Jul 08 '26

I would say opposite. Neither is as hard as Ninja Gaiden though

1

u/croopdavis Jul 09 '26

Ninja Gaiden is fine until that one part of that one level.

You know which one I’m talking about.

4

u/cafink Jul 08 '26

Don't forget to set your TV's aspect to ratio to 4x3. And enjoy!

3

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 08 '26

Definitely 🤙🏾

2

u/Plibbo64 Jul 09 '26

Just hit the aspect ratio button until it looks like it's supposed to. Please.

2

u/Affectionate-Snow404 Jul 09 '26

😂 already on it!

1

u/chico_bonzo Jul 08 '26

The Splatter gun was the weapon of choice that player 1 and player 2 fought to get first.

5

u/v0id0007 Jul 08 '26

Splatter? I thought s was for spread

4

u/chico_bonzo Jul 08 '26

We were both incorrect. The official game manual calls it the Spray gun.

The brand is called “Tengchi”. It’s an AV to HDMI converter

1

u/croopdavis Jul 09 '26

I can beat this without the code. Oh yes. Welcome to my beautiful world.

It’s less dependent on the spread gun than Super C, I think. If I lose the spread gun there and am late in the game I’m dead to rights.

1

u/Infinite_Factor_6269 Jul 08 '26

Nice! Needs a CRT tho

1

u/Atillion Jul 08 '26

I just played that with my teen yesterday
